I think hype begets hype.
MG and VHIII were both 5-stars coming out of high school and they had good freshman seasons. Because they were national recruits, they were already on people's radars and the hype train continues.
Sutton and Barnett were relative unknowns and had to fight for recognition, whereas analysts were looking for reasons to crown MG and VHIII. Same with Clowney.
