Tony Robinson didn't singlehandedly carry the team through the first half of the '85 season, but I do believe that the team relied too heavily on his golden arm. After his season-ending injury, however, that defense came together like few that I have witnessed and became an absolutely impenetrable fortress. It was not the most talented Tennessee team by a long shot and it wasn't even the most talented Tennessee team that Majors would field, but it consistently achieved as close to its maximum potential over the course of the second half of the season as any Tennessee team that I have watched over the course of 48 tears.

I cannot speak for the pre-Neyland era, but I would agree that we have just gone through the worst stretch in the last 50 years. Another point for your consideration is that our longest drought between SEC championships is 16 years (1969-1985 and 1998-2014). We probably will not win a conference championship this year, so that drought most likely will reach 17 years before we are within striking distance.

My Dad has shared with me on these years, it just seems so hard to believe that our fanbase would be that patient...but I am sure Majors being an ex big time player and having the NC under his belt helped his cause.

The Bama wins from 82-85 probably helped a lot too!

93.7 in Atlanta is broadcasting from media days. Barrett Sallee was on this morning and predicted Tennessee to win the East. He has a Bama vs Tennessee SEC Championship. He said he liked Tennessee's defense better, plus Dobbs and the WR's. He thought Tennessee had the best roster in the East and he said something like it "wasn't close." He said the UGA-Tennessee game will be the de facto East Championship game. A few other things was he shared was Arkansas is way overrated, South Carolina is going to be bad plus Florida would be better than people think.

I don't think I've ever seen someone give as much love to Tennessee as Barrett Sallee has this off season. That dude is stupid high on the Vols.

Isn't he based in ATL? Kinda wonder if he's only doing it to create controversy among UGA fans. Maybe he's their version of Clay Travis.

I know he was really big on UGA last year. He wasn't really down on them when he was speaking, he just thought Tennessee was better at most positions and UGA had too many holes at QB, WR, and DL to win the division. He did say that there wasn't another team in the East UGA would lose to.

Possibly. It doesn't sound like feigning praise to get the locals riled up though, it sounds like he genuinely is that high on the Vols. He has more faith in us then a lot of our fans have.

Florida does worry me. They have some talent. But I'm not sure how they overcome that offensive line.

I think Arkansas is going to be good. They play winning football and are going to be in just about every game. Great defense, great running game. Those things win you ballgames.

They will have to keep opponents under 20 points to win games. That's why I think Butch gambles big time down in Gainesville this year. Expect to see a lot of high-risk plays if the offense sputters. He'll trust our defense to get a lot of stops and turnovers.
