True, but being up only 9-0 and expecting to win was a huge mistake. Even without the strip sack, UF needed just one big play and they're within 3.

That's why I think Butch gets more aggressive past the 50 this year. More 4th down attempts, more shots at the end zone, and even a trick play or two.

That's all predicated on them stopping our offense, of course, which very well may not happen at all.

Predicated! Excellent appropriate usage. Although rare, Grammar Nazis can praise as well as scold :)

Which is huge IMO. He was more openly optimistic than I expected

Because he knows the focus and determination of this team and what they are capable of doing. The only reason he throws in some comments about still being young is because he also knows we need a little luck to not have serious injuries at positions where we still have little, experienced depth.

Who here wanted a sound bite from coach? Here ya go ICYMI:

"Our top 22 can match up with anyone"

To me, this says:

"We're as talented as anybody in the country. And we can play with anybody in the country. We're just not where we want to be from a depth standpoint. But watch out, because we can play."

For Butch to say our starters can match up with anyone... I might have to raise my expectations from 8-4 to something higher. That's quite a shot in the arm.

I'm so ready for the season to start. I'm trying to temper my expectations , so my heart doesn't get ripped out lol. But this year's seems different . We aren't grasping for straws when we are talking about how we could win.

I hope we run Florida out of the building before halftime. Nothing would make me happier than to see them heartbroken .

i agree. i also think that there is some players in the program that they have a feeling about but just havent seen enough yet. They just know they are ultra talented. Guys like McDowell, Bates, Phillips,Creamer,Weatherd, Lewis, Kirkland, KMAC, Berry, RDA,Foreman, Branisel, ETC. I think theres some depth but they just need to see more and thats what camp is for. But i know one thing, some of these kids that are in backup spots right now are really talented. Hes not going to say much about it right now. He will let August sort it out.

"To see them heartbroken" ...only wish Muschamp was still there to see it.

I'm still skeptical about our O-line, and that isn't going to change until I see them consistently play well against top teams.

Rather than saying our top 22 can match up with anyone, I would say that our freshman and sophomore classes match up with anyone else's freshmen and sophomores.

I still think the better teams on our schedule (definitely Bama and UGA, probably Oklahoma, maybe even SCe, Mizzou, UF (at least at certain positions)) still have junior and senior classes that, on the whole, are deeper and more talented than our junior and senior classes.

That, in a nutshell, is why I think we still have an uphill battle in front of us against the top teams we will face (particularly Bama and UGA), and I think that's what Butch is talking about when he says we're not there yet, which he did say more than once yesterday. Every year we close the gap a little more, but it will take a couple more years to really get there.

In closing though, I will say that this year I think we have the potential to beat any team on our schedule. This is the first time I've felt that way in several years, and IF the O-line really does come together and IF we stay healthy at the key positions where we have little/no depth, we could be dangerous (like going to ATL dangerous). I just think there are still too many of those "ifs" for this year to be the year. 2016-2018 I think we'll be strongly in the hunt.

OL will be fine. Game Experience, another year in weight room and the Debord factor. All you have to do is listen to Butch talk. If he was worried he would tell you. This time last year he was very worried about OL and made that clear publicly. This year he sounds very confident with them and talks about having depth there now with scholarship players across two deep for first time.

He is very very confident in this team. He even said it yesterday at end of his SEC Network interview this team is still very young but they are very talented

Steve Wiltfong - Director of Recruiting at 247

@SWiltfong247 #Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd, at 6-3, 242, will typically be bigger than every person trying to tackle him other than DLs. #BiggerFasterStronger

Definitely the most confidence he has ever shown in the team. That statement makes me feel really good

FTR

Dobbs, Barnett, Moseley, Malone, S. Jones, Phillips, Justin Martin, Richmond, Taylor, Tuttle, Kirkland, Kamara all comitted after July.

No reason to panic.

Bama's been leaning more and more on players they've signed in the previous year's class. We have an experienced junior at QB against whoever GA throws out there. They're throwing out a lot of their youngins and if you watched any of their spring game, they're hurting at DL and needed Thompson badly (the true freshman). Oklahoma is more talented than they finished, but our freshman/sophomore dominated squad weren't physically trashed (despite the fears of the buyout advocates) by them(overall...not OL :) ) last year...and they didn't retroactively outrecruit us. Speaking of "hurting". The rest of your list SCe,Mizzou and to a lesser extent UF, are not LOADED...that's an old scouting report. Maybe I just value our juniors and seniors more than I should but I think we have a good mix and shouldn't be retreading our new traditional inferiority complex. :hi:

OU has had a ton of attrition as well. Not much left of their '11, '12 and '13 classes either. obviously the '11 kids would be 5th yr guys but still.

I dont agree about Mizzou either.

Everyone giving Dave Hart props for bringing NIKE to campus. However, it appears he got us hosed at the negotiating table:

Dustin Dopirak @TennesseeBeat If I do the math right, Nike is paying Michigan $6.4 million per year in cash alone, which is more than five times what they're paying UT.

BREAKING: Michigan says its deal with Nike from 2016-2027 is worth $169 million w/$76.8M in cash alone)
