The sad thing is that we're not that far off. We should be 4-0, ranked in the top 15, and confidence sky high heading into a home game against a bad Arky team.

Absolutely. That is what makes it so frustrating. All of the preseason optimism was very warranted! No one took into account how much of a negative impact our own staff would have on the outcomes of games.

If we go 5-7, we will have a new head coach by December. Hart's hand will be forced.

I'm skeptical that would happen. From what I've heard he gets another year regardless. These are almost always money decisions and unless some major boosters force his hand, which I don't believe will happen, it doesn't make financial sense to do it. His defense will be he's returning his most talented team.

Its ironic that these losses which are excruciatingly close may hurt confidence more than losses where there is clear separation.

True. Especially when the whole college football world is talking about your inexplicable inability to close. It almost becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. When people are ridiculing your team and calling your coach Choke Jones all over social media, it's going to be hard for the team to maintain confidence in their ability to overcome adversity and win.

And why do we want him to come back and squander it?

Unless we see some MAJOR injuries, I have no doubt that a losing season would mean a new staff. Most talented roster or not, anyone can see that a losing season with this team spells trouble moving forward.

Butch Jones would be a better coach if he weren't such a control freak.

I think Hart has some blame resting on his shoulders for enabling him.

Hart could have forced some staff shakeup where necessary and and facilitated the hiring of a real OC instead of some clown that couldn't even muster decent passing statistics with Tom Brady at the helm.

Our AD is far from broke. We've come a long way since Dooley's last season. We're getting like 30-40 million a year from the SEC network alone.

Better than its been, but not out of the woods. Still paying Dooley and would owe Butch and staff a huge amount after the extension last year. Then would have to pay a whole new staff on top of that. It just isn't happening. Can't afford to yet.

Not sure if we should have any confidence in Hart to get it right if we have to make a change anyway - same guy that brought us Donnie T and Butch...

I don't think Hart is that bad. Butch is probably the best we could've gotten after Dooley. A lot of people like to forget how bad the talent was on top of the fact that we had an APR-related bowl suspension looming. Regardless of what happens with Butch, he was most likely the right guy at the right time to dig us out of the hole and rebuild the roster. He's proven that much, even if he's a terrible game day coach.

UT, Auburn, and Arkansas are poised to have disastrous seasons. The UT Arkansas game next week is big in terms of determining which team is going to hit rock bottom again.

Yep. I'd like to think that playing in Neyland will give us a boost, but these last few years, we're just as likely to lose at home. Some of our most heartwrenching losses have been in a packed Neyland. I have a gut feeling that Arky could have less of a heartbreak hangover than us, though. We're one of the most beatable teams left on their schedule, and I think they'll bring it.

Not disagreeing but these decisions are almost always money decisions, never wins and losses. Ticket sales for 2016 season won't be known until late spring early summer. Big time boosters would have to threaten to pull support before it would happen. I don't think that happens. Keep in mind that if we fire Butch his successor will likely be as underwhelming as Butch was.

I'm picturing the commercial with the grandmothers.

Seriously though, Butch will be back next year regardless of record this season.

That's entirely possible. It won't have anything to do with Cheek though. It's much more about the big money boosters, but with the SEC TV money I'd say Hart has more freedom to make that call on his own than he would have in previous years.

Hell, I would be giddy as a school girl over Justin Fuente at this point.

That is what it has come down to.

Yep. Dooley seemed to struggle in recruiting, motivating players, keeping the locker room in check, roster management, etc (though he did have some terrible game-day decisions made as well).

It seems that we've gotten pretty much the opposite in Butch.

Dooley was not only an awful coach but he simply didn't give a ****. That was obvious in games and on the recruiting trail.

Butch is a great recruiter and has been fantastic Sun-Fri. I have no doubt he's giving 100% and cares for this program. Maybe he cares so much that it's effecting his in game decisions. It's like he's trying so hard to make the right calls that he's not using common sense. He may be scared to fail.

Maybe so. But don't underestimate the influence the Bullgator has on the AD. Unfortunately I don't think they are getting to keep all of the SEC money. It goes to academic causes as well (as it should).
