Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXIX

By my math, ESPN's FPI gives us a 55% chance of winning the East and going to Atlanta. As you guys know, that requires a UF loss to LSU (82.2% chance of happening) and Tennessee beating Mizzou (87.3% chance of happening) and beating Vanderbilt (76.8% chance of happening).

Brice reported something awhile back about Mahoney not getting an extension last year when everyone else did and said something to the effect that the writing on the wall there was more like graffiti. Also said what I took to be a hint at Debord retiring.

If I'm not mistaken, LWS seemed to hint at Martinez being gone.

Upgrades needed at both spots IMO.

Thank you.

Any recruits/visitors worth noting yesterday? Akers has to still be interested somewhat after seeing our run game and his potential role in it.... Haven't seen a lot of talk lately on where we stand with kids. Seems a little too quiet at this point in the season. I guess kids have cooled on us for some reason. I remember before the SC game, supposedly there were 5 higher level kids that were indicating interest and the staff was going to need to make room... then crickets.

Welp, Chase Rogers just De-committed... Chase's Dad was the one that said UT needed to make room for 5 more kids, so will be interesting to see what happens. We should be getting commitments, not losing them at this point.

Shoop has done a terrible job. Lots of experienced players playing in that secondary that can't play dead in a western.

Ol Shoop got stupid real quick amirite?...OR...he has a lot of idiots that have a lot of experience, and no talent or football sense. Considering what I have witnessed the man do in his career before now, I'm going with the latter. He needs to be allowed to bring his own coaches in...And any idiot that discounts him having to work with no DTs, automatically gets their opinions disqualified for sheer stupidity.

The class is full, we can't be "getting commitments" without also losing others.

We are going to be playing musical chairs a lot between now and NSD. I'd set the over/under at 12 on total commits/decommits between now and then. It's just the nature of the beast.

Here is an outside the box narrative for you guys:

Tommy Tuberville took over for Butch at Cincinnati when Butch took the UT job. In his first year, Tubs went 9-4 (6-2) and in year two he went 9-4 (7-1) with a conference title, in year three just 7-6 (4-4) and now in year four he is 4-6 (1-5).

Meanwhile, we all can see the upward trajectory Butch has UT's program on:

5-7 (2-6)
7-6 (3-5)
9-4 (5-3)
7-3 (3-3)

Safe to assume that Tubs had a lot of initial success with Butch's players, and now that they are largely gone, he is struggling? And also safe to assume that Butch struggled in years one and two with Dooley's players, but now that he has a roster of his players he is steadily improving? I think yes.

McGill bringing the heat. Most accurate assessment.

Personally - not sold on any coach on D except Shoop. Strip is good, but he is 63 this month and probably going to retire soon. Thig and Martinez are OK. Need better than OK. But the rock and hard place issue has to be dealt with to allow Shoop to bring in his own guys. No way would I allow it as a HC if my DC is on a no buy out contract if he decides to leave. He needs to lock in. Add another year to make it three again, he agrees to a stiff buy out, then he is authorized to hire at least two unless Strip retires, in which case make it three.

Tubs' coaching staff also turned over with the two winning seasons. Prunty, Rolan and Koonz are the only ones that were there for any of the first two seasons. He lost some good ones including Eddie Gran. Recruiting has suffered as well. It proves that Brian Kelly raised the recruiting standard, Butch continued it, and now they are struggling even with new facilities and an updated stadium.

Oh so we are good and don't want anymore, we are full and will end with 100% of the kids we have now? Don't be a DA, obviously I mean there will hopefully be upgrades, which seems to be the case with Chase's de-commitment and others will leave. Happens every cycle....

Didn't say it was going to happen. He was just putting his opinion out there.

Byrd needs to be moved he can spell in on offense. Jennings should've been moved after last year if that's the case.

Now not playing Warrior is flat out laughable. Don't know why it's so hard to put your most physical DB out there and let him ball versus a team that runs the football.

Former players say JJ is a natural safety. He can still rotate in at WR. Other schools have had great success using key players on both offense and defense.

A lot of us shake our heads at some of the coaches' personnel decisions. Too bad they can't creatively produce some LBs.

UK not a good matchup for a S that has a tendency to be out of position. With that said, LB and S run fits were terrible yesterday. I doubt he would have done worse in that area.

McElwain said in his post-game presser the Gators had 3 TOs and "you don't win many games with 3 TOs." Got a good laugh at that. We've been winning all year averaging 3 TOs a game. Shoot, we almost beat UK by 27 points with 3 TOs and we went to 2OT with aTm with 7 TOs. Vols have to be #1 at winning with TOs.

That's what surprised me the most, and concerns me the most about our D. With our lack of DT depth, I figured we would see more big plays because Kentuckys o-line was able to get to the second level. Our LBs have played enough and should be better than that. I was especially disappointed in DK and TK.

If we make it to Atlanta then Bama might run for 600 on us
