57th in scoring defense....could be worse with the injuries, but I hear what you're saying.

JRM would make such a huge difference though.

I get that.

I really think Shoop needs at least one guy of his own choosing on his staff at DB or LB coach though.

I get that defensive injuries have been bad this year, but I still feel like there can't be that much of a difference between the talent Shoop's had to work with and some of this Vandy defenses he had play so far above their talent level.

Until this year, he'd always had a top 25 defense. Now we're closer to 100. Injuries and it being the first year in the system definitely should account for some drop off, but just how bad we've been makes me think there's something more to it.

Personally, I think the fact that he wasn't able to bring any of his own guys with him has something to do with it. I think he may need a couple of his own guys on his staff.

Yes everybody coaches schemes different even if it has the same concepts. I'd love for him to bring in his own people.

If we still had JRM, O'Brian, Tuttle and KMac our defensive numbers against the run would be much better. That's a ton (literally and figuratively) of missing talent.

Is the safety play really as bad as some are letting on or is it that they're having to do more than usual in an attempt to compensate for shortcomings at corner and LB?

1,200 + yards of offense
58 first downs
9 yards per offensive play

Enjoy this one, the second time through.

Is there anyone who was "encouraged to look elsewhere" during Butch's time that we look back and think "that was a terrible decision to let that one go", in hindsight?

Just for discussion. I can't think of any, besides transfers.

I'm convinced it's 100% injuries. Those were significant seasoned veterans we lost with a bunch of experience. They also were getting all the reps in fall camp. Now we are replacing them with talented freshman, etc that likely had not been the focus of the coaching staff (i.e. they were on scout teams, etc). You also have to remember we lost role players that probably were the first in line to step up (e.g. Sapp).

The thing I think we all have to remember is these aren't professional athletes. They only have so much time they can practice, etc so naturally the coaches focus on the more experienced players, etc.

This defense would look very different if we had only lost one or two players. Shoop gets a pass from me.

Final thought: people who complain about CBJ's recruiting aren't paying attention. We've lost a ton of key players this year and he may get us to 9-3 and the east. Meaning the net effect of those lost players was losing one game we weren't expected to (USCe). We've filled in the gaps with good talent.

Muschamp did much worse in 2013 with arguably equivalent talent post-injuries. Dooley's 2011 squad went into a tailspin with basically two injuries (hunter, bray).

We win the east with what we've gone through and CBJ should get a coach of the year vote.

After seeing all of the crazy upsets even just yesterday, I'm beginning to think the same. Not everyone can beat who they're supposed to by 50 every time out. Only one team can (Bama). 9-3 and going to Atlanta considering the injuries isn't a failure. We are really playing with like one DT right now

We have one experienced true DT healthy. Picou is alright but yesterday was his first time in the rotation for a significant game. Shoop played bend but don't break and did a masterful job. I think that was his plan all day

Our starting lineup against UK had 8 of the starters from game 1 though.

Masterful? Really? Only MSU and New Mexico State have allowed UK to score more this year. They moved the ball at will and we got some breaks and a couple nice plays in the red zone.

Look, I'm all for giving him slack. I get that he's been decimated by injuries and we're thin. I'm not saying he's a bad DC or his job is in jeopardy or anything, but something isn't right.

Does our D really have less talent than those Vandy squads Shoop coached? Is our DT situation THAT much worse than our 2014 "pair and a spare" with Jordan Williams and DOB playing 80% of the snaps?

I'm not sure the answer to those questions is no. When I look at Shoop's track record, the talent levels he'had have varied, but his defenses have always had relatively similar production levels. What's different this year? Well, for one thing he's working with guys he's never worked with before who were brought in to coach a less aggressive, bend don't break, take few chances scheme.

That's not saying our defensive staff is bad or anything, but sometimes you can have a group of guys who maybe just don't work that well together. I think we're seeing a bit of that create a perfect storm with our injury situation.

Former players say JJ is a natural safety. He can still rotate in at WR. Other schools have had great success using key players on both offense and defense.

A lot of us shake our heads at some of the coaches' personnel decisions. Too bad they can't creatively produce some LBs.

JJ was ALWAYS a safety. Hopefully he WILL be a safety. Sorry Volatil, I always said this. That said, thank goodness he was a WR this year!
