People dogging a DC that doesn't even have DTs. That's flat out crazy. NO DC Can stop the run without DTs. Man lost 3 of the 4 linchpins of the defense early on then started losing DTs like crazy. Some calls I questions and I think we should go less cover 1 personally but he had 40+ sacks last year at Penn State. That doesn't happen by accident.

I don't think anyone here has suggested the defense should be elite after the injuries. My criticism of shoop isn't that he hasn't stopped the run but that he hasn't even slowed it down. I fully expected Kentucky to get 200-250yds on the ground but I expected a competent DC to at least slow them down.

I also expected to see some individual development amongst the defense and to be honest I am not sure anyone is noticeably better than last year. If so it is minimal at best and that is a bad look for a DC.

Jalen Hurd, the third back at best on our roster is a perennial pro bowler.. 🤔 Makes sense. He could get the perfect scheme/Oline and still look average because he isn't an instinctive runner.

As CJ has said, We aren't going to stats. When your 3rd string DT "Bain" can't play you know you have reached the bottom. We got people out of position trying to fill holes. If I am not mistaken at the end of the game we were playing the bottom of the chart. Those guys haven't been playing all season for a reason. Now they are are out there as our last line of defense.

Your D expectations are unreasonable given injuries.

Subs playing haven't had the first team reps and aren't as familiar with new defensive scheme. When a new DC brings in a new scheme there is a learning curve.

Backups haven't acclimated on D to this system yet.

Additionally, some have underperformed.

And?

Jared Goff went #1 overall and can't get off the bench while Dak Prescott went in the 4th round and has benched a former pro bowl QB and looks like an MVP candidate as a rookie.

I'm sure Barnett will be drafted high. NFL teams like fans get fooled by college stats.

I'm not saying Barnett won't be drafted highly. I'm saying he won't be a STAR in the NFL. Those are 2 different things.
I really hope you are right about Dobbs because he is a wonderful person and he has overtaken Streater's record, but you are totally wrong about Barnett. He has been held, tackled, double and tripled teamed and he is still about to break Reggie White's record in three years in the SEC, playing a really tough schedule.

I've been consistent on this. Derek Barnett does not have a high ceiling as a NFL player.

Now I want to stress this point. I'm not saying he'll be a BUST. I'm just saying he won't be a STAR. There are many good NFL players that never develop into stars. That's all I'm saying about Barnett.

I think his body, skill, and talent reminds me of Charles Johnson (long-time DE for the Panthers). Like Johnson I expect Barnett to be a 10 year starter, have a couple of 10 sack seasons, but never become a pro-bowl/star caliber player.

He'll just be solid in the pros. Not a star.

Dobbs is no Dak Prescott though

We've had to sub players in at every starting position, minus Barnett, on D. Some who were classified only as possible contributors (not just this year but over their respective careers) are now being called on to start multiple games.

We have walk-ons starting at DT and MLB and 3rd and 4th stringers being forced into action because of injuries at key positions.

THAT is the problem, not Shoop. Perspective people, have some.

Who is the walk on starting at DT?

Barnett, Lewis, Vereen, vickers are 4 pieces of a DL that this program would have died for a few years back.

Add a 5star phillips and Kingbo and it looks even more impressive. Mixon has played a hell of a lot of football and has been around for a long time. Picou is in his second year in the program and should be contributing.

Even with the injuries there are plenty of pieces on that DL to be an average defense. A DC like Justin Wilcox would have killed it with that DL.

Lol. Playing in one game against TN tech sure as hell isnt starting or even contributing.

There he goes. :)

I think we also overlook the fact that many of our players are likely still playing through injuries and aren't 100% even though they are back on the field.

No he wouldn't. We don't have defensive tackles Bruin.

That's where its at in this league. You better be good at DT or you're not gonna be very good on defense.

It's hilarious how quickly this place forgets how bad the roster was on defesnse and how those units played better and were well prepared than this one does now that is vastly more talented and experienced than those.

Yea Kongbo has just been a destroyer hasn't he? NOT! But I am not going to get into this with you. You live to get things started so you can beat the subject to death. Enjoy.
