Also on the Jancek/Shoop argument.

One is widely considered a top 5 DC and has the resume to back it up.

The other is now coaching S at an AAC school.

This argument is silly

Shaun Ellis was 6'5" 290 lbs. Barnett is 6'3" 265 lbs.

That's a significant difference in size. And size matters in the NFL.

Barnett will be undersized in the NFL.

Elvis Dumervil was pretty undersized at about 5 ft. 11 inches and around 260 lbs. He's closing in on 100 career sacks. Generally speaking, size does matter more in the NFL. But, Barnett has that determined attitude where he just keeps coming and coming. I believe he'll outwork the guys who are bigger than him and have a good pro career.

6'3 is pretty normal sized for an end. Don't know why people on this board acting like Barnett is small. Lol

If we don't get give him a raise and extension the finish to this recruiting class will be underwhelming indeed. It would put the program in a bad place.

I personally think if we got 9-3 and win the east he will have earned it. The injuries and clubhouse issues we've dealt with would have completely sunk many lesser coaches. His recruiting and team management have kept us where we are.

Most fans are completely unreasonable in their expectations. The injuries are real and they are significant.

I can get behind this thinking. :good!:

However, I am not one of those fans who disregards the injuries that have happened this year in any way. Go back through my posts if you want, but I can tell you I have understood how bad these injuries have hurt this season. Heck, I fully expected our defense to have a hard time stopping the run against UK because we are playing 3rd-5th string DT's. It is what it is and I think that winning out will be more proving than what some will think. This roster is gutted in some positions.

The reasoning behind my "no extension" post was that he is already here through 2020. And he has made (according to what we know as the fanbase) some boneheaded moves like with Hurd and how the offense is ran. Especially with how poor this team is with turnovers this year. I'm waiting to see what he does in the off-season with personnel choices as assistants.

Elvis Dumervil was also freakishly explosive. If you are undersized you've gotta be freakish another way. And Barnett is not a freakishly explosive athlete.

Barnett being undersized in the NFL is laughable.

Take a gander at the sack leaders this year and it's littered with guys his size. He's plenty explosive enough to be a force in the league.

Guess who has played the toughest schedule in the nation thus far....again?

http://stats.ncaa.org/reports/toughest_schedule?id=15122

So:

Auburn is #18 in the AP Poll and #28 in SOS.

aTm is #23 in the AP Poll and #26 in SOS.

UT is #29 in the AP Poll and #1 in SOS.

All three have three losses-- and two of UT's are to Top 10 teams. And we're ranked a spot below VT-- another three-loss team that we beat decisively.

Sounds about right.

Barnett also has much better athletic gifts than he is being given credit for. On Saturday, I watched him blow the doors off the LT repeatedly (which we see ALL the time) and chase down a RB from behind (which we've seen before). I look at him like a bigger Freeney. In any case, to downplay his NFL prospects while touting those of Hurd and Dobbs is illogical in my opinion. Let's just see where they are all drafted.

A lot of y'all don't like Bruin and toss out anything he says because of that. He's making some decent points.

Shoop hasn't looked great this year. Personally I think injuries have played a huge factor. The slow starts are concerning to say the least though.

Where are all the people who said "look what he did with Vandy talent. I can't wait to see him here" ???? We still have more talent than Vandy. Are you gonna blame it all on his assistants?

Fact is that fans bought the hype on Shoop and are gonna look for any reason they can to blame someone other than him.

We have given up big plays, but we have really only lost one game we shouldn't have. We still could have beaten A&M on offense alone. However, as I stated last night, if Shoop had been our DC last year, there is a very real argument to make that we would have played in Atlanta. Shoop shut down UF this year in the 2nd half without 3 key players. He would have found a way to stop UF on one fourth down. It is not that farfetched of an argument.

I believe Shoop's defenses at Vandy were very good in the backend, and we are struggling there.

Also impressive is that, when you sort by the far right column (which adds future opponents, Missouri and Vandy, to strength of schedule), we still have the 3rd toughest schedule. And with a bowl game and potential rematch with Bama, we might move up to 2nd or 1st for the entire season. Murderers. Row.

Never fails.

I fully expect GT to be a 12-win caliber team next year and WVU to have a Baylor-like offense with Will Grier at QB in 2018.

I don't pretend to know much about football, but I believe Ellis eventually played in a 3-4 in the pros. You need bigger DE's in a 3-4. Barnett is a 4-3 DE.

Khalil Mack is 6'3" and 250. Ezekial Ansah is 6'5" and 270. Everson Griffin is 6'3" and 273. Michael Bennett is 6'4" and 274. Cliff Avril is 6'3" and 260. These are the top NFL defensive ends in a 4-3 system. These guys are all similar to Barnett's size.

Edit: You can add Olivier Vernon, Connor Barwin, and Brandon Graham to that list as well.

Two quick thoughts.

1.) Injuries, yeah, they've been devastating. No way around that.
2.) We don't play Vandy's schedule.

Yea, I said it at the time, but go back and look at the wins that Franklin compiled at Vandy. He had the year where he beat UT, UF, and UGA, and that is really impressive at Vandy. But other than that, he feasted on some bad teams.

Other than the OSU win, he is also doing it at PSU. I believe the OSU win was his first against any ranked opponent (3rd year).

I know it is a football forum, but everything is talked about in this thread-- Is AL going to start gaining momentum in Basketball too with Avery Johnson? They just got a 5* and a 4* commit Friday... AND a kid from Chattanooga is going to KY.... I admit I don't keep up with Bball recruiting, but I think it's safe to say Ricky B isn't pulling in that type of talent... Do you guys think this is just a finishing point in his career to coast, or do you think he will start pulling some higher-tier guys?

totally agree, we always get the OC opponent when they are peaking.... How the heck is GA Tech doing so well when their recruiting is always sub par?

They aren't that good. They are 6-4 and were 3-9 last year. The triple option neutralizes a talent disparity, but they have struggled some the last two years. We have all offseason to prepare and our offense should score points.

I'm not arguing draft position. I'm arguing NFL production.

Just because you get drafted higher doesn't mean you'll be better. See Jared Goff vs Dak Prescott.
