Love JR. One of my all time favorite Vols. That being said he had a bit of a rough finish last night. Thankfully the Heat still pulled it out. But yeah, love to see him contributing on a playoff team. Once he gets more confident and isn't relegated to just being a spot up 3 point shooter, I think he can really be a player.

I cannot stand Steven A., but I would probably like him some if he would just drop his schtick and stick to what he knows something about. He is pretty good talking about the NBA. I am glad that Josh is getting some love.

As a basketball analyst, he's awesome.

Also, +1 for using "schtick" and "stick" in the same sentence.

The Kirby dawgs thing reminded me...every once in a while I'll catch the Chuck Oliver Show on 1180 as I leave the gym. I guess he's out of Georgia.

Are all the media in that state slobbering over Kirby that bad? Good grief, you would think they've hired a genetic hybrid of Lombardi, Saban, Sun Tzu and Patton.

The UGA 24/7 guy managed to sound worse.

That whole fanbase is primed for a massive let-down, and its going to be awesome.

The Media in State is even worse. They act like hes not only the next Saban, but hes gonna be better. Its horrible listening to their talk shows.

On the back and forth tweets with UF:

“it’s also generation iy, and these young people, they broadcast their emotions, their feelings, what’s on their mind, and they’ve grown up in this generation,” jones said. “but we do educate them — as long as it’s respectful and all that. But we do. And we place a lot of time on training, you know, representing your personal brand and what it talks about. And i always tell our football team, ‘your game is loud; you don’t need to talk about it.’

“as long as it’s respectful and all that, (it’s fine). But we do try to educate them every day on social media and turning social media also into an advantage for you, as well.”

The irony is even Saban took a while to become Saban. He won 59% of his games at Michigan State, 75% at LSU, and 85% at Bama. Interestingly enough, Saban's winning % at LSU is only 1% higher than Mark Richt's 74% at UGA.

And this is Smart's first ever time as a head coach. It's hard to say how good he'll be but you're right they're probably going to be disappointed.

Basilio's site has this interview archived.

When he said "4th down. Game on the line. I'm coming after you" I had a chill run down my spine. I love finally having a DC who has marbles. Really hoping this guy is as good as the hype suggests.

His record suggests he's pretty darn good too.

Vandy 2011 - 4.82 yards per play - ranked #14
Vandy 2012 - 4.75 yards per play - ranked #16
Vandy 2013 - 5.07 yards per play - ranked #25
Penn State 2014 - 4.27 yards per play - ranked #3
Penn State 2015 - 4.78 yards per play - ranked #14

Same stats for Tennessee over that time period
Tennessee 2011 - 5.43 yards per play - ranked #57
Tennessee 2012 - 6.13 yards per play - Ranked #102
Tennessee 2013 - 6.07 yards per play - Ranked #100
Tennessee 2014 - 5.31 yards per play - Ranked #46
Tennessee 2015 - 5.21 yards per play - Ranked #39

Forget the hype, that's a lot of data that says Shoop is really good. When I think about how the talent on this Tennessee team compares to those Vandy teams I get giddy.

This will definitely be the most talented defense he has ever coached. Could be something special

Too many athletes on that defense to not attack the QB.

When you have guys like JRM, Kirkland, and Taylor ... It's a no brainer.

Calling plays this year on D is going to be pretty simple...

Blitz every damn play. D gonna eat and knock out a few QBs and the usual UGA RB.

No offense but for me personally I will need to see it happen on the field and I'm not a big believer in stats. Stats are for losers in my opinion. They can be made to say whatever you want them to say.

I want to see this team make big stops when it needs them most.

Couple of observations that for no reason at all just popped into my head.

Jalen Hurd

Jalen Hurd needs 176 yds to crack the top 10 for UT leading rushers. Could be done in the first game. Should definitely be done by half-time of the VT game.

Mr. Hurd only needs to avg 75 yds per game to break the record and that is only counting regular season games. His avg per game to date is 84.1 yds per game. :)

He could realistically be about half way there by the end of the Florida game....if not before. (this is assuming CBJ doesn't pull him too early in the 1st three games).

Derek Barnett

Derek Barnett needs thirteen sacks to break Reggie Whites record. While Derek has averaged 10 sacks per year the last two years, this years schedule actually should lend itself to adding a few more sacks to that avg. Our four OOC games this year appear to be overall the weakest it's been in years. Couple that with the fact that several of the SEC teams we play this year are replacing a lot of starters and breaking in new QB's...the season should be record breaking for him as well.

It should not be absurd to think that it is quite possible that Derek could have 6-7 sacks before we even start SEC play against Florida. Let me repeat that to let it sink in a little. It is not crazy to say that Derek Barnett could be 1/2 way to the record 1/4 of the way through the season.

I'd like to see us have a goal to break a bone of our opponent each game. 😈😈😈😈😈😈

What part don't you understand?

Stats can be misleading.

Here's an example....https://twitter.com/CBSSportsNBA/status/727310754202918918/photo/1

Also, Vandy having a top ranked defense statistically shouldn't be that surprising. They were offensively anemic. Teams went vanilla and protected the ball. They knew the only way to beat them was to get beat by turning the ball over.

I'm not saying that Shoop isn't gonna be great. I'm saying that while his stats at PSU and Vandy are promising, it is not a foregone conclusion that this guy will be lights out in Knoxville.
