What part don't you understand?

Stats can be misleading.

Here's an example....https://twitter.com/CBSSportsNBA/status/727310754202918918/photo/1

Also, Vandy having a top ranked defense statistically shouldn't be that surprising. They were offensively anemic. Teams went vanilla and protected the ball. They knew the only way to beat them was to get beat by turning the ball over.

I'm not saying that Shoop isn't gonna be great. I'm saying that while his stats at PSU and Vandy are promising, it is not a foregone conclusion that this guy will be lights out in Knoxville.

This is not a SSS, which are absolutely misleading. This is his entire body of work. Not misleading at all. We can deduce that the consistently great defenses he has had will translate to a defense with more talent than he's ever had, no?

Couple of observations that for no reason at all just popped into my head.

Jalen Hurd

Jalen Hurd needs 176 yds to crack the top 10 for UT leading rushers. Could be done in the first game. Should definitely be done by half-time of the VT game.

Mr. Hurd only needs to avg 75 yds per game to break the record and that is only counting regular season games. His avg per game to date is 84.1 yds per game. :)

He could realistically be about half way there by the end of the Florida game....if not before. (this is assuming CBJ doesn't pull him too early in the 1st three games).

Derek Barnett

Derek Barnett needs thirteen sacks to break Reggie Whites record. While Derek has averaged 10 sacks per year the last two years, this years schedule actually should lend itself to adding a few more sacks to that avg. Our four OOC games this year appear to be overall the weakest it's been in years. Couple that with the fact that several of the SEC teams we play this year are replacing a lot of starters and breaking in new QB's...the season should be record breaking for him as well.

It should not be absurd to think that it is quite possible that Derek could have 6-7 sacks before we even start SEC play against Florida. Let me repeat that to let it sink in a little. It is not crazy to say that Derek Barnett could be 1/2 way to the record 1/4 of the way through the season.

Could you imagine if both returned for their senior year? (I know they won't) but they would destroy those records absolutely destroy them.

While it is true that statistics can be manipulated to prove a specific point, they can also be used to evaluate trends. There is very little deviation in the five years on record for Shoop. I hope if we do have an outlier year this year, it is an outlier with a significantly lower average yards per play as that is much more likely than a significantly higher average yards per play.

Hurds should surpass by 600 yds (minimum) this year IMO.

Barnett should get the 13 required to break the record....could add a few to it.

Not even going to try to imagine if they both come back, because you are right, neither will (short of injury this season).

This will definitely be the most talented defense he has ever coached. Could be something special

It wasn't as talented as our 2016 D should be, but the 2015 PSU D had some talent. Had 4 draft picks on D, 3 of which were DL. They will have a couple more on D drafted in 2017.

He finally said it. "We're a veteran team." Youth no longer coming out of his mouth

Maybe he was telling the truth before.

Last 2 years we've had 0 players drafted. Florida in contrast has had 15 players drafted.

Yes we had upperclassmen playing. But they were scrubs compared to Florida's upperclassmen. Butch was telling the truth that we were a young team. Almost all of his talent were freshmen and sophomores.

So you throw out an isolated statistic to throw doubt about statistical trends?

Yes, stats can be misleading. Just like your argument.

Sorry Aesius, not biting on that bait - but may nibble.

If pushed to speculate, there is something odd about paying his own buyout...almost like there were certain clauses not agreed upon and the buyout was the bargaining chip.

Can't imagine CBJ and AD wouldn't try to block a move to Vandy with something like a non-compete.

Can't just impose such a thing...has to be written into a contract. If he wants the Vandy job (and it's available), he has free rein.
