Maybe I view this differently.

I see this as Butch believes he has a chance to win it all and parlay this into a payday. Float the rumor now and lay the foundation "brick by brick".

No NFL team would hire a guy who threatened a player or initiated the code red.

If he bounces after a playoff run, good for him. We are in much better shape to hire a huge coach now.

I'm a Butch fan. Hope he stays but if he doesn't we will be fine.

Again, I believe this is ground work for a raise. It's how the game is played in coaching.

Am I in the minority when I say that is be holy with 10-2 and a trip to Atlanta? Obviously I hope for better, but 10-2 would be the best season we've seen in quite some time.

Is that be happy? I would be good with that? Not sure it would help with holiness.

A 10-2 season might not win the East, if one of those losses is to UF or UGA. If the other is to Bama, we will lose to 2 out of 3 rivals again and keep those embarrassing streaks alive. The pressure is on Butch to start beating rivals and winning the big games.

Butch and Shoop have both mentioned the number 11 several times, and that includes sweeping the East. They set the expectations, and the media and fans are running with them.

Couldn't agree more.

I pretty much feel the same way. But if Butch is able to turn a successful 2016/2017 season into an NFL opportunity, I'll wish him the best. He'll leave the program in a much better position than he found it and we should be able attract a great coach if he does leave.

His contract extension means that if anybody hired him away, they'll have to pay the university a pretty penny and we'll have plenty of capital to bring in a new coach in addition to the talent Butch has recruited.

Or Shoop would just take over.

Shoop may have it in him to be a great HC but he'd have to produce a top 5 D this year for me to feel good about that coming to fruition.

If Butch jumps to the NFL we'd be one of the most attractive HC openings in the last decade because of the talent and depth that he's assembled and the very real possibility of being playoff contenders again. I'd much rather see if we could land our Harbaugh or Saban rather than our Kirby Smartt or Brent Venebles.

I agree. That's why I posted my comments on his next gig being the NFL if he left at all awhile back. I had heard that from a local VFL - nothing official. The logic of it makes sense. The grind of recruiting, dealing with the AA, school admin, classroom performance, off-field stuff, etc. gets to these guys. They are financially secure and really don't have much to lose by giving it a shot for a couple of years. If it doesn't work out they can land a good gig back in college if they want to continue. Seemed to have worked out well for Spurrier, Saban, etc.

Butch has all of the contacts and respect within the coaching community and players he needs to do well. However, I don't see it happening until he takes the big step to the national stage here. That could happen in a couple years if all goes well.

Eh, Butch is closer to Calipari from what I've seen so far. Wins in recruiting and talent, not X/O. I don't think he'd do well if he couldn't out talent his opponents. JMO

Butch would go from sitting on a throne (Game of Jones) to being an afterthought in the NFL.

Seriously how many of you know all the NFL HCs names?

His game is recruiting and promoting. Neither are needed in the league.

This.

Butch's strengths are recruiting and developing/helping young men. IDT his style would translate well to the NFL. I can see how shorter hours, less traveling and less of a grind would be attractive after the nonstop pressure of the SEC, though. Butch probably didn't realize the toll this job would take-- not sure anybody could have, really.

If he does leave, he'll leave UT in great shape. We should have no problem making a top-notch hire.

I agree. I think he's a CFB coach through and through.

And I also think Butch is the type of competitor who would wanna test his worth at any level. If an NFL team was willing to take a chance on him, I think he'd take his chances.

I'd only be concerned about our replacement coach. I don't trust the AD to hire a proven winner and open the piggy bank up

Pretty much how I feel as well.

Sure, UT would be in great shape, but who could we get? The program would be attractive enough to poach some established guys, but would the AD actually go for it? Or would Hart try to get lucky again and find the next Butch Jones?

If we did go the poaching route (and if Butch even leaves, which is a longshot IMO), I think they'd have to go after Dabo first and foremost. I don't particularly like the guy, but he's a great coach and elite recruiter. At this point in his career, he's a more accomplished Butch Jones IMO.

I think LWS misunderstood the context of what he heard. Butch is checking his prospects in the NFL, NOT as a coach. But as the new mascot up in D.C.
