Hope it isn't after this season because the timing would be really bad. We would have to potentially compete with Texas, Texas A&M, and LSU all of which are more attractive jobs.

Did you see the recent SECN segment on the Vols and McElroy sat down with Dobbs in the film room? I agree that Dobbs has struggled some passing, especially the outs and verticals. But they showed this exact play, and McElroy praised him for the throw. Dobbs tried to say that Smith made a great play, but McElroy slowed it down and basically said it was thrown in a window where only our guy could catch it. Sometimes our fans criticize things that outsiders view as better than we think.

Edit: Did not see above before I posted.

It's because either Gary or Verne made the remark that he didn't think that was who he was throwing to during the broadcast. That comment stuck in folks' minds for some reason.

I'd only be concerned about our replacement coach. I don't trust the AD to hire a proven winner and open the piggy bank up

I'll disagree to an extent. I think Hart has done a good job of getting the AD finances back on track and would be more inclined to spend a little money, if needed, this time around.

Might be wishful thinking on my part, though.

The last part.

I have little faith in our AD, Hart specifically. He backed into Jones, is fortunate to still have a job after he botched Tindall, then finally made a good hire with Barnes, all the while simultaneously making a charade out of the Lady Vols.

I'd have more confidence in David Blackburn.

Just sayin...

I think our Football program is clearly on the right track and I'm a huge fan of Barnes. I don't think Hart is all world or anything but he isn't as terrible as many make him out to be on here.

Shoop may have it in him to be a great HC but he'd have to produce a top 5 D this year for me to feel good about that coming to fruition.

If Butch jumps to the NFL we'd be one of the most attractive HC openings in the last decade because of the talent and depth that he's assembled and the very real possibility of being playoff contenders again. I'd much rather see if we could land our Harbaugh or Saban rather than our Kirby Smartt or Brent Venebles.

For butch to get the NFL call, I would think our D would be at that level.

I can see Butch hopping to a power program in another conference before heading to the NFL. If a Big 10 job like Michigan State opened up, I could see him considering it. The SEC is brutal and the competition is tough, week after week-- perhaps tougher than he thought it would be. It's hard on families, especially those with young children. But I really don't think Butch is going anywhere any time soon.

Again, if CBJ leaves after this next season to take an NFL job I'm not worried at all. That means we will have just enjoyed one of the best seasons in program history and the job will be extremely atttractive to prospective coaches.

Am I the only one that thinks Butch's skill set isn't a match for the NFL?

Agree. Not taking away from Butch, but his strengths are being a salesman and a motivator. His in-game coaching hasn't blown anyone away.

His personality is more suited to the college game as well, imo.

Not really.

Explain. Looks pretty similar to me. If anything, Butch is a much better coach than Schiano. If he wants to go to the NFL after a big season here, he would get a look.

Then again, with the NFL's love of retreads, he would probably get passed over for any job openings due to someone thinking that Ken Whisenhunt deserves another opportunity.

Took Schiano 6 years to build up Rutgers in a weak conference, and he was unable to truly sustain the success.

Butch has UT preseason top 10 in 4 years after taking over the program while it was in its worst state since the late 70s with a roster comparable to Kentucky's.

If he delivers this season, there's no question in my mind that he's a better coach than Schiano (who, BTW, had 3 wins over ranked teams in 11 years at Rutgers).

I certainly wouldn't trade him for Schiano right now, even after the early season meltdowns of the 2015 season and the 2016 season still undecided.

1. Butch hasn't accomplished anything yet. Let's start with that. Last time I checked, the preseason polls aren't out yet, and even if they were, they are about as important as a piece of toilet paper.

2. Rutgers was a toilet of a football program when Schiano got there. The worst of the worst. Worse than Vanderbilt. He had them top 10 and had a 2 loss season. Just insane. Rutgers.

3. Schiano also had a big hand in one of the best runs in college football history at Miami before he left for Rutgers.

4. Butch's first Tennessee team would have beaten Rutgers in 2001 by 40+ points.

5. Rebuilding Tennessee compared to building Rutgers is like putting new tires on a Corvette vs. making a lawn mower win the Daytona 500.

Pump the brakes big time. Give Butch a chance to actually accomplish something before you blow that much smoke up his butt. He's nowhere near sniffing an NFL job.
