What pisses me off is that my Bama friend predicted both 8-4 and us getting blown out by the Tide. And that was all preseason. He has been super critical of Jones the entire time he's been here, and he has actually been spot-on with almost all of his criticisms of this staff.

Time to end the tide naysayer.
Just post an address and then have an alibi

This obsession with Butch's "coach speak" is baffling to me. I want the man to win football games. Do we really think he would win more games if he talked a certain way?

Didn't think so.

Amen...it's called COACHSPEAK because coaches speak it.

Basilio has been saying since mid October that he was hearing that Butch wouldn't mind a fresh start elsewhere. Butch is thin skinned and feels like he's underappreciated and doesn't understand the heat he's received. Said he felt he would be open to a lateral move. Sounds to me like he was spot on.

Volquest and 247 know that Trace Armstrong has been kicking tires on some programs and they are reporting it now because they have something more concrete.

Also, LWS was tossing out scenarios where Butch bounced to the NFL if he could parlay a 10-2 season into an offer. (Not quite the same thing as what we are talking about now but it shows that he wasn't as married to this job as we thought)

Also, Butch isn't "leaking" this stuff on his own. That would be stupid.

He pushed hard to get an interview with Michigan two years ago as well and he probably would have had they not known they had Harbaugh in their back pocket.

I've thought for a while Butch may want to move - he's not a great fit here. It may turn out the Vandy loss keeps him here because it killed any sort of sales pitch he may have had.

No, but if he would actually man up and take some responsibility every now and then the fan base might have given him a longer leash.

They will. Right now he can do nothing right in their eyes. He could say anything and it will get twisted by the fans.

If he is going to remain at Tennessee he needs to drop the canned PC talk. Individuals, eye discipline and that stuff. Personally, I don't care what he says but it has ran it's course with fans and fuels the rage now.

I remember how mad I used to get after a loss when Fulmer responded every time "well we've got to check the film." After a while "check the film" became like nails on a chalkboard. Butch has about a dozen phrases like this people are tired of hearing and he just needs to shut up and coach.

Resliency.

It is old, but I also wish our local media would report the news and not fuel flames. That statement he made about our seniors got stretched out of proportion. Talk about beating a dead horse--it was all over the sport channels (even the Championship show) with great laughter.

I'm sure that really helped our recruiting.

Where you been? No they wouldn't. Wins and losses to whom and when. Heard the same talk after the Vandy loss first season.

Depends on if he is that way all the time with the players. If so they eventually tune him out for being a robot. Might be what is happening now but there is no evidence of that other than Wins and losses.

of all teams navy could delay the bowl selection by winning this weekend and being in play for the cotton. could push selection back to army/navy on the 10th.

Will see how it goes, but I hope 8-4 is not considered successful at UT. That's treading water. Bill Battle had Butch's type record in his last 4 years and was met with a moving van after building great trust in his abilities with his first 3 great seasons. Butch gets the 5th season to prove he can win mainly because of his contract terms IMO.

Different.

Coach Battle started with a good record and got progressively worse. He then left the cupboard bare for Coach Majors.

CBJ started with a bad record and is getting better.
Potential S&C mistake cost progression this year (many other factors too)

I have seen Butch at his coach carousel stuff and he was having fun with Coach Barnes and not such a robot.. I figure that's just a press thing. I would hope.

Correct. Obviously that's not gonna happen.

That was always silly talk. Not sure why LWS brought it up. He knows better.

He said it because it was a true goal Butch had. He also said he didn't see it being realistic. Only saying what Butchs dream would have been.

Here's one thing about all this stuff though is maybe after this fiasco Butch realizes he messed up and has full focus on what he needs to do. Some have said that is the case now such as that just a vol post someone posted here. What I think is getting lost in this is people are offended by his kicking the tires like he hates us or something. I have been told that is total opposite. He loves TN and the fans. I think some are worried close to him that the expectations and the media scrutiny will have long term health consequences and that played a part in his kicking the tires around.

I agree he needs to be more real with his players than he is with media and fans, which I suspect he is.

I'll always believe strength coach decision was his most critical mistake. I was worried about that because our opponents like Kirby when he was at Bama, said we were the fastest and most physical team they played that year. The Bama players said same thing. I just thought to make a change like that you should have waited until this offseason and not the offseason of your money year

We all know why people are complaining about this, that, and everything else. If you don't meet expectations, you will be criticized, fairly or not. Butch set himself up for this with the "own it" stuff and saying "no one has higher expectations than we do for ourselves."

He pushes this positive attitude stuff at the wrong time, and if he would simply say the same kinds of things his players did, like "I'm embarrassed," and "this should never happen," a lot of people would be off his back in a hurry. Instead he brings the positive spin that no one wants to hear and it constantly backfires.

I think that is the biggest frustration as far as press conferences go.

Oh, I think there is no doubt Butch wants the fans to love him. In spite of the robot speech, he is very emotional--takes things to heart.

I can recall when he first came here, he had the practice with the practice Vol Walk. He was so excited. He had tears in his eyes when game day came.

Even as late as the Georgia game, he fell down on his knees and seemed to cry. He went off coach speak and blurted out how someone had made a cross on his shoe.

I want him to succeed here.

He does take responsibility. But it's hard to get mad at that, so fans ignore it.

I agree with Bruin on one thing: people look for things to get pissed at this dude about, and it's silly. You want to be pissed at him? He lost to South Carolina. He lost to Vanderbilt. We're 8-4 and sitting at home this week, when all we needed to do to play in the SEC championship was clean up the soft back half of the schedule.

There are your reasons. That's all you need. All of this other crap is just fluff to make the list of grievances seem bigger.

Mark Howard on the zone this morning was saying Jimmy Hyams was mentioning that Shoop may be out. Crazy.

Stuff like this can get twisted pretty quickly. Hyams likely speculated that he could see a scenario where Shoop is gone. He was in play for the Delaware job for one.

Then someone on a radio station 200 miles away brings it up and it becomes "Hyams says Shoop is out."

Then someone says "Jimmy Hyams is reporting Shoop is gone."

That's how these things grow from speculation to rumor to "Jimmy is clueless. He reported Shoop was gone and he was sooooo wrong."

Not hating on you for bringing info jsp. Just saying we have to be clear on what was said because message boards and talk radio take speculation and turn it into "reporting" very quickly. More talking about a big picture problem that happens during silly season.

Possibly. I think there might be another one outside of that one.

Lord I hope not TBH!! Living amongst wvu fans, during gamedays, we have multiple tv setups to watch Vols and wvu!! That would suck having to watch him again weekly if he bails on the Vols!!

Jimmy is the beat reporter they have on their show every week, him and Howard talk constantly.
