Speaking of daughters, mine just walked through the kitchen and saw the piece on ESPN about teams that controlled their own destiny but lost in the conference championships(they showed us in 2001).... she said it would be freakin awesome if FL upset AL today, that would make her year because it would shut up all the Roe Tawd idiots she hears droning all day every day.... then she realized FL would then win the SEC championship game (knowing that school is a cuss word in this house and how FL would act and what we would have to hear all year until next season) and said, "dammit Butch, you just had to go and screw the pooch and mess everything up.... TN could have been the one to pull the upset".... "Brick by brick... guess he's still finishing up the mailbox".... Ahhhh, I love daughters! This coming from a girl who wants to go to Ole Miss...

Too bad our whole fan base is completely fine with losing

Wurd... because like someone said in the FF,

"Funny.. you got fans that want more, expect more outta a coach that makes 4.1 million, wants to hear that he admits he messed up, wants to hear the coach be human, instead of a walking cliche machine. Wants a team that has the most talent, returning talent than anybody in the east, to be where they should be in the conference championship game. And people are mad about it.. well so am i, who are you to call me a negavol, im sorry if you accept mediocrity, maybe your the negavol cause dont you expect more."

This guy gets it....

Not "whole". I know several on here that aren't. But I agree that apparently the vast majority are. They rationalize losing like crazy, but criticize those that point out the realities that most times the losing is self inflicted. Pretty interesting when it comes to understanding human behavior.

Participation trophies are given in primary school. Then the real world kicks in. Saban gets it.

Go watch the end of Ole Yeller. Travis didn't get a participation trophy, but the dad explained that someday your dog will die and you gotta suck it up, quit mopin, focus on the good in life and move forward.

This is such an oversimplified statement. No one is fine with losing. The opinions of how to do it are different, and if someone thinks that firing the current coach isn't realistic, then it appears some think they are an idiot.

Agree completely.

Every politician alive says education is the key to changing individual circumstances. Probably has a great deal of merit. So, how would it hurt our loyal, rabid fan base for Butch to become a real person with them and educate us on how this happened and how he is going to correct it? That builds goodwill and brings hope for a better future whether it happens or not. Instead we get silence and brief moments of more coach speak. Tells me a lot about the man.

Its cowardly and tells us they know what they are doing is far from honorable. If they were up front on the front end they would communicate thru the end of process.

This is the last post I want to make on it because it would be foolish for me to ask you to chill and then me enter an argument with you on it.

The other side of it is that it's better for the kid if they get to decommit from us. When we pull an offer then the kid becomes damaged goods and the perception of the recruit changes. Much better for the kid if he moves on without UT pulling the offer.

What you suggest isn't realistic. They aren't going to call these kids up and apologize and give them a list of reasons about why.

You're crying about the Cotman kid but in reality they probably told the kids coach and he offered to break the news to him. The kid should have just said he was opening up his recruitment and been done with it.

I wish they would just get better recruits to start with. That fixes the whole thing all together. I think Butch likes to stay high in the rankings year round because he likes the perception of being ranked high.

Bottom line....I want the best players possible. Kids feelings are gonna get hurt from time to time. It's part of it now. You can't trust the kids to stay committed and there's too much at stake to settle when you think you can sign a better player so you can't expect coaches to 100% stay committed.

Does Butch do this too often? Maybe. But you better sign the best class possible. Winning is what matters. Fans only care about this kind of crap when you're losing. You sign the best players and you win games. If you don't win enough this is the kind of thing that starts to pile up against you.

Winning cures all.

Just wanted to give the other side. Now hopefully this won't turn into another horse beating.

Need more of that and less of the BS...

Great post.

I think the early signing period would help this some. Lock in early on the core and play the field for the others later in the cycle. Works both ways to reduce some of the mess.

Can't believe basketball season is upon us. I'm coaching a rec league team today, hope I keep my cool. Something about basketball gets me fired up, even more so than football.

This is completely just for discussion purposes...

Noticed Sumlin received the dreaded vote of confidence from his President yesterday.

Would you guys hire Sumlin if Butch leaves (his choice or forced) after next year?

My 7 year old wears her orange every Friday before gameday and hates Georgia. We live in Atlanta. It's glorious.

We live in Atlanta too. Have three wonderful daughters, 1, 3 and 5. My wife's sister and her family live close by and are Bama fans (reasonable ones). My three year old loves to wear orange and run around their house yelling "Boo Alabama!"

I would. He was an even hotter name than Herman just a few years ago
