Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXX

I realize this may be the wrong forum for this, but I want the season to explode with WINS; signing 5 Stars is a means to an end, but the rating system is somewhat window dressing. The Head Coach is responsible for the bottom line and that is to win. Losing to South Carolina and Vanderbilt won't cut it in any year. I couldn't care less how many stars a kid has if Butch thinks the kid can play at a high level, great. Butch is responsible for whatever happens. Sign the right kids, have great coaches to coach them up and then WIN doggone it!

Rant over.

Even General Neyland lost to Vandy. He liked it less than anyone but it happened. You have to bring your A game every week and we didn't this year. Now the team goes back to work and hopefully learn from this season.

I think this talk about not having a strength coach is way overblown.

1. The guy was here until well into the spring. Damage was done prior to his departure.
2. He was the strength coach for all sports, not just football.
3. He wasn't the one working with the team on a daily basis. The guy that did that is still here.
4. There was only 2-3 months that we were without his services before fall camp when the workout schedule changes drastically.
5. They don't do much lifting during the season.
6. It would have been harder to get a quality replacement at the time of his departure. Both college and NFL guys are heavily into their routines so it would have been difficult to pull someone at that time of the year. Better to wait till this time and you get your pick depending on how much you want to spend.

#6 was what I was saying to Bruin. If Rock was his guy, but he was under contract with LA, then it makes sense that we tried to go without one.

The thing is, there is a middle group that is trying to push for reason. This group says that 8-4 with the team we started the season with is unacceptable. This group says yes we looked bad on defense and really didn't play up to the teams capability all year. This group also recognizes that there are a lot of possible reasons for why things didn't go our way this year. However, if we can't stick with a coaching staff long enough for them to truly make a run then we will forever be mired in mediocrity. This year should have ended very differently but we got knocked on our butts. Butch had us going well enough to be hyped as hell going into this season so why all of the sudden is he Dooley level. I believe in lofty expectations but I also am able to objectively look at why those expectations might not be met. I will continue to support this team no matter who coaches or plays on Saturdays. Offer criticisms but make them constructive and not just emotional off the cuff "Fahr ERRBODY" criticisms.

Also, this is directed at you LA Vol. Just a general rant.

My point is simply that if you expect more, it's okay to be-- and say that you are-- disappointed when you don't achieve it. I don't care what the excuses or reasons are-- and there will always be some-- not achieving something you set out to achieve is disappointing.

Being disappointed isn't an indictment. It isn't assigning blame and it doesn't have to be an expression of hostility-- though many make it out to be all of these things. It's simply saying you wish something had turned out differently. I, for one, expected more out of this season and wish it had turned out differently... though I understand why it did not.

The mistakes are correctable. It's all dependent on if he wil willing to correctt them to win big here. He could really help himself with a few hires. Look at penn st. Franklin days look numbered so he brings in a new OC to change philosophy a bit. It worked. Butch needs to take page from his book and realize that he is not some offensive genius and that others are far more innovative

He will just hire someone else good with the amount of money he has allocated to that spot. I kind of wish Kiffin went to LSU to keep that from being a place that takes out candidates

Ya he can get anyone with 1.5 mil at OC. I was hoping Kiffin would go there too, help beat Alabama down some.

Nick Saban just made it to USJ this morning. He gets the last visit before Trey Smith announces his decision tomorrow on ESPN.

All this disagreement just underscores the division in the fanbase and the program. Some people think 8-4 and a bowl is a successful season; some consider it a failure. And both sides lash out at the other for having a different mindset.

Big picture, UT no longer has an identity. The past decade has obfuscated who we are and what we expect. Do we expect to compete for championships every year and are disappointed when we fail... or are we satisfied with with beating a rival or two and getting to a bowl game? Are we a top-tier program or a mid-tier program? Because what is acceptable for one is unacceptable for the other and there will be no agreement until everybody buys into the same standards and expects the same results.

I'm clearly not in the "fahr Butch" camp, but I'm not calling this season a success by a long shot. It's very disappointing. I just think there were some mitigating factors (primarily that everybody and their mamma ended up on the DL) that led to the outcomes we saw. I mean, seriously, in all my years of watching of sports, I can't remember a team ever getting hit as hard with the injury bug as this one did. It was absolutely devastating.

Anyway, I'm very disappointed with the way this season went, but the positives with Butch still outweigh the negatives in my mind when I consider where we were 4 years ago compared with where we are now. I do have some concerns about how this team performed (injuries notwithstanding) in terms of coaching, consistency, discipline, etc., but for me Butch has done enough positive things to get the benefit of the doubt for the short term.

Sidebar: I also think it's really hard for us as fans with no inside access to evaluate the job being done by the S&C staff (for those inclined to blame them). I suspect that most of the folks on social media calling for those guys' jobs don't know the first thing about running a high level S&C program (I certainly don't).

I chat with several Vol fans that I see on a weekly basis. We discussed expectations, the team, the games, etc.- all before the season. My exact statement was that "it will be a disappointment if we don't win the East. However, that does not mean Butch Jones should be fired."

It is crazy how that has now become the hot topic. I just don't believe the two go hand and hand. You can be disappointed without wanting change at the top, and I think that is where some of the division comes from. People automatically want to fire the coach when they get pissed off. Changes to other parts of the program are coming however.

Saw a tweet earlier saying that only 5 players started all 12 games this season. I wonder how that compares to other teams?

If he met with him today he can't meet him again?

Said butch used his last week now the assistants are going today...midget can't go back to back days

Who would have thought a few years ago that Nathan Peterman would have more wins against top-10 teams than Butch Jones? I'd have lost a lot of money if I'd bet on that.
