The 2016 and 2017 classes were "depth classes." By the way, I'm making a face as I say that because that's not much more than an apologist term. 2018 needs to be elite. If we are a good team this year- which I think we will be- we will lose some of the elite talent from the 2015 class. That's just the way it works. The 2016 and 17 classes had a few top end guys, but likely not enough to contend for much of anything except MAYBE a division title.
i don't disagree, and on the depth thing, i was really just talking about LB in particular as it seems we're not focusing on a lot of high level talent at that position this cycle.
team 122 seems to be a team that may be capable of doing something on the field as it stands right now. we will return a lot of talent and experience next year. but i'm afraid, like you, that team 123 may take a bit of a step back.
for all intents and purposes, this whole 2018 season feels a lot like 2015, for all the reasons you stated.
and another reason i think there's some depth issues helped in this cycle, particularly on the LOS. questions elsewhere....and that's primarily after the 18 season...when these guys are RS fr and Soph...
so to me, what i see is a two year run basically with the current roster, and the 18 and 19 classes ready to come in for 20 and 21+ and be significant contributors.
all that to say, if there is something positive to look at, this cycle and next won't be totally relied upon to immediately fix the ills of the talent dearth that existed, as the 14, 15, and, 16 to a lesser degree, classes were.
this class and the next will have the opportunity to develop.
