I look at it like this: In my profession, I want my work to be admired for it's quality. A plumber wants to be known for great plumbing. A chef for great food. A member of the media should want to be remembered for quality reporting. Instead, most aim to gain the most attention; good or bad. There's no integrity anymore; no sense of responsibility or greater standard. It's all about first and most shocking. Truth and quality fall somewhere way on down the list of priorities.

That's admirable, and on a personal level, I agree. The business dictates otherwise though, so in that space, it's not a realistic philosophy. Being first or being provacative means eyes on content.

At the end of the day, this whole "the media is the enemy" thing is surreal to me. It's not unique to Butch either- POTUS obsesses over it. With the greater connectivity society has, and a growing list of media and ways to consume it, it's not going to change. Best to focus on your actual enemies like Alabama, Florida, or North Korea than something that is so nebulous, and at the level we are talking, insignificant, like the media.

The issue is that Butch is obligated under his contract to make certain appearances. If he is bland and boring, then he gets criticized. If he speaks his mind, then he gets criticized. Just unfortunate.

If we have a good year and continue a couple of streaks, I hope it gets better.

It's not really an issue. Be bland, let the criticism roll off your back, and move on.

awesome day, i believe ohio state lost that day helping push us up the bcs poll putting the cherry on top that day. destiny. also thank you to a&m for later beating k state, glad we didnt play micheal bishop and co in the fiesta bowl.

You don't think that Tennessee team would have beat the brakes off that K-State team?

Very subjective question here, but of the guys we've signed here, rank the top 5 in your opinion, based on who you think will have the biggest impact on this team during their UT playing careers.

This could be by any metric you choose... playing time, big time plays, etc.

1. Cade Mays. Seems like an obvious #1. Likely 3-4 year starter and the kid looks like a day one impact player and likely NFL draft pick.

2. Lyn-J Dixon. I see many 50+ yard touchdown runs in his future. I also think he'll be a threat receiving out of the backfield.

3. Michael Penix Jr. Kind of going out on a limb here, as Martinez seems to be the more marque QB in this class. But this kid is still learning the position and his growth from his sophmore to junior year was impressive, and recent video of him at camps, he looks like a natural. This, by no means, is a slight on Martinez. I kind of just think when Dormandy and JG leave, it might be Penix taking the reigns if his arc continues up.

4. Brant Lawless. His size and athleticism can't be coached. I think as a NT he's being misused in high school and if you put him at the 3 along the line, he'll be a disruptive monster.

5. Tanner Ingle. If this kid was two inches taller, he'd be a more highly sought after recruit. He's a missle in the secondary and the honey badger comparisons have been out there. I think he can live up to them.

Right or wrong, I'm rooting for all of the kids that want to be a part of what we're building here.

1. S Tanner Ingle
2. WR Alontae Taylor
3. QB Adrian Martinez
4. DL Greg Emerson
5. OL Cade Mays

This was tough to do cause this class is so deep. I like almost all of our commits. Here are a few others I think will be great:

- DT Jamarcus Chatman
- DT Brant Lawless
- CB Brandon Cross
- RB Anthony Grant
- TE Jacob Warren

Needless to say I really like this class.

And unfortunately, we (society) rewards that, myself included, by reading and sharing. I may read and share from disgust or to make light of it bc of it's ridiculous claims. But all clicks are equal. Social media has such power. The problem is, it has such power.

The public doesn't hold the media accountable for its failures. Newspapers and TV stations have learned that they can report false information, rake in the clicks, shares, likes, etc., and then issue a fine print retraction a week later while still claiming to be objective, professional journalists.

Still don't see how a 5-7 Texas team is ranked with a new coach. If they win week 1, they will probably shoot into the top 10.

That's exactly what happened last year. And the media were allllll about some Longhorns. And then they showed how mediocre they really were....along with Notre Dame.

Edit: Also, I am just now realizing how late I am with this reply as someone has already said this. So I will just throw in some "Go Vols", a "wgwatfa", and top it off with a "15-0".

I just think it's ridiculous how a large portion of the media, and a small but vocal portion of our idiot fan base keeps poking fun for every little thing. It's like it's the popular thing to do now, so people think it makes them "cool" to jump on the bandwagon. It's really lame and played out.

reddit's CFB sub is also full of pathetic self-flagellating Vols fans. The OSU, UF, Bama, UGA, etc., posters on there love to **** on Tennessee, and the prominent Vols posters are pleased as punch to oblige them and talk about how much Butch and the program suck.

So are you saying Mays will NOT have a huge impact at UT? Or is that ranking because of his position?

He crushes people in camps and on the field. I'm curious to hear your rationale behind ranking him 5th.

Getting a lot of work done on that 17 day vacation he just left for

I'd say he's been pretty hard at it for the last couple of years. Goes to bed around 12 and gets up at like 4 or something insane like that. I'm cool with him taking a vacation. Shoot took a vacation just about every other month when he was in the White House. I'm more concerned with the Republicans doing what they've ran their campaigns on for the last 7 years.

That Tennessee team would have beat K-State, but do u remember what McNabb did to UT in the season opener? Bishop wasn't as good as McNabb, but he was still a very good dual-threat QB and K-State was a better all around team than Syracuse. Let's just say that everything worked out the way I preferred.

Glad we avoided K State, and glad we avoided a rematch with Florida.

They do the same on Rivals main board. It's sad.

Listened to the radio this morning and Vince Farrara this morning and he broke down his projected starters: 2 5 stars, 13 4 stars, and 6 3 stars and 1 2 star (Vickers). That's far more 4 and 5 star starters than we had last year and yet people think we're suddenly terrible. Okay. Since I believe Richmond will be starting that's actually 3 5 stars we'll have starting imo
