Ok. Except Worley wasn't nearly as accurate in practice as QD. Dobbs played as a Freshman and looked like a Freshman. He might have been the better choice starting over Worley his sophomore year for sure though.

I'll tell you this, I can't wait for the season to start. If QD is the play I hope he is, we are gonna have a good year. If he isn't, I hope Butch doesn't wait to long to pull the trigger on JG.

Worley outpracticed Dobbs as a Sophomore and got the nod. We wouldn't pull Worley-Bird until he got injured and Dobbs literally saved Butch's behind.

Biggest problem with practice is a player like JG can't use his legs. People thinking he's not athletic can go look at his HS highlight video. He's not going to all of a sudden get slow. His speed is apparent when you look at him and that stride. That dynamic will compromise coverages on the backend and take a defender out of coverage to account for a QB. Could open the middle up for Wolf especially.

Here are Tuesday’s observations…

The pat-and-go period wasn't particularly sharp today. Quinten Dormady did look really good and was easily the best of the bunch, but the rest of the quarterbacks had a bit of an off day, as way too many balls hit the ground. Jarrett Guarantano threw a couple of nice strikes, but he also had several overthrows on nine routes and post patterns.

Freshman wideout Joshua Palmer made a really grab adjustment to catch a seam route — only to get a talking to by Larry Scott for running the route wrong. Later, Palmer got an earful from Butch Jones about not planting his foot correctly during a slant route. Tennessee’s coaching staff clearly things highly of the freshman and is working closely to make him as ready as possible for the 2017 season.

Elsewhere, I continue to be impressed with all three freshman tailbacks’ hands. Ty Chandler and Tim Jordan are solid receivers, but Trey Coleman might have the best hands of the bunch. He really just plucks the ball from the air.

Defensively, Tennessee began one of its “Georgia Tech days” in earnest, as all three units worked on various drills related to the Yellow Jackets’ triple-option. The defensive line worked on shedding cut blocks and getting off the ground, while the cornerbacks did a similar drills on avoiding downfield cut blocks.

The linebackers and safeties both worked on maintaining eye discipline while “tracking the alley.” The purpose of the drill was to follow the A-back or wideout going in motion but still maintaining gap discipline.

Man, I am excited to have JG in Orange. If he wins the nod then I hope he is everything you say and more. However, if QD gets it then I hope he balls out and never relinquishes control of that spot until he declares for the draft.

Lol. A natty?

This is where you always go wrong. Your expectations are all out of whack. We didn't have national championship talent last year and we don't this year.

We need to get to 9-3 and make it to Atlanta.

A natty? Lol.

Please stop saying that, its lame.

Hmmmm..... So we were winning early on without 3 of our top 4 defenders. Would've destroyed A&M just by not turning the ball over 6 times.

The same team healthy had the game versus Bama in Tuscaloosa with a less experienced team. That was the same team that literally led in every game they lost. Talent isn't the problem. Coaching, injuries and S&C were the issues. Talent isn't the issue this year either. But I guess I'm delusional. When I was saying how good we were two years ago before the Oklahoma game people looked crazy. Then we got off the gas due to coaching not TALENT....

Agreed. We've seen some puzzling (and sometimes frustrating) coaching decisions over the last 4 years. I think there were definitely games we had no business losing. Imagine if we had 4 of those games back. You guys know the games I'm referencing. The 7 win season could have been an 8 or 9 win season and the two 9 win teams could've been 10 or 11 win seasons --- with at least one trip to the SEC title game. As good as our recruiting is now, I can't imagine the impact that kind of success would have on the 2018 class and beyond.

I think we had the talent to win those games. The coaching held us back. The media saw this and that's why they're skeptical Butch can get us to the next level.

My "glass half full" persona says Butch has a new staff and learned from his mistakes. If he did, we should be in good shape.

Why are people acting like Chandler is small?

Because of the pics without full pads. He looked smaller than I expected at first but now that he is in full pads he looks back to what was expected. RTI that has that video has an article today saying he looks more like an SEC sized back with pads on.

Bryan Fischer, whoever that is.

He also finishes by saying, "The schedule is absolutely brutal however and it will be mildly surprising if there's not a coaching search in December."

It was even more brutal last season and most of our defense was obliterated with injuries, and yet we still won 8 regular season games, which was a credit to Butch. This season the brutal schedule is more speed out rather than a 4 week stretch of nasty games, we have more depth, and appear to have improved our coaching staff. We lost some key players to be sure, but we still have enough talent, including talented depth, to improve on last season.

But I realize it is easier to write provocative articles than actually research the subject of the article.

Worley over Dobbs IMO was more all the youth around the position that a veteran was needed to run it. Along with Dobbs family wanting him to redshirt and everyone knowing that 2016 and 2017 would be more competitive years to the point the the staff wanted Dobbs as its QB last year and this year. Imagine if we could have redshirted Dobbs like they planned. We would have Dobbs and Malone returning and possibly had found a way to convince Kamara back as the feature back with a shot at a title run again. Doubtful in a Kamara but Malone would have come back in that situation.

Different situation in a ways thisnyear. Butch has to win now. So he will take the more veteran guy. JG will get work this year. Both QBs willmplay

Would you rather have Florida get obliterated by Michigan, then have their soul crushed in the Swamp two weeks later.

Or, have Florida undefeated with all the talking heads making them a dark horse National Championship team, just to have their soul crushed in the Swamp by the guys in Orange.

That's easy.

Florida beating mich is good for the Vols

9-3 this year
10-2 or better next year and an appearance in ATL

At that point, Butch will have secured his position here and will have cleared a path to start recruiting at the same level as Dabo, Urban, Saban, Fisher, etc., on a consistent basis.

He's recruiting well but not national championship level. Gotta remove some obstacles to get there (i.e., stop the hot seat talk by winning more games), but he has what it takes once those obstacles are removed, IMO.

Great post.

Theo Jackson will be a player here. He might end up being the best DB in the 17 class

Field looks like it will look nasty come Oct/Nov.
Don't think the grass will hold up this fall

Who said I don't support the Vols. I just don't believe in a certain QB. Problem? People on here didn't believe in Dobbs. Doesn't make them negavols. They just don't believe in certain players. I don't believe #12 can lead us to a natty at Tennessee. So yeah it is what it is....

You don't think QD can win a Natty, so Butch will be fired.

Super logic there, BB.
