Everyone says that QD can't run the read option and the defense won't fear his legs, but literally the first play of the film, he keeps the ball and gains 5-6 yards. You don't have to have a super athletic QB to keep the defense honest. Mix that in with Kelly toting the rock and QD slinging it around the yard and our offense might end up pretty dang good.

This to me was/is the most frustrating thing about Butch Jones and his system:

"The Vols’ formula on that side of the ball had been mostly about the end game: score a certain number of points, build a lead of a certain size, and pack it in."

"Hurd’s injury forced UT to give the ball to Kamara, but then Kamara got hurt and missed two games . The pieces didn’t come together until Kamara came back and the defense made it clear that the Vols were going to need to score a lot.

And then, poof, Tennessee briefly had the best offense in the country. Oh, what could have been."

I want a team and a staff that doesn't play it conservative. Go all out all the time and try to win. Be the aggressor.

Don't say we need 24 to beat this team and only aim for that. Things during a game change. Score as many as you can and let the defense do it's job.

Spot on. 2015 looks crazy different with that approach, then the 2016 recruiting class looks better, and no hot seat talk...

My concern in defense this year is going to be defending the run. Our DEs are pass rush specialists at least that is my perception of them. What could make up for it is the increased speed in back 7. A healthy Kirkland. A slimmer Cortez. The return of Sapp and Smith. Bituli in the mix. Nigel added to S.

I don't see the "pass rush specialists" aspect. The closest to that bill would be Taylor, but he ain't a 220 pound HS receiver anymore...more like a 250 lb Simeon Rice doppelgänger. Both Phillips (depending on if he backs up Taylor or starts at weakside) and Kongbo are former DT fill-ins on the other side and aren't going backwards when they meet a runningback. We've all seen pics of true freshman Matt Butler and they don't scream beefed up linebacker. We got some loaded up boys on the edge imo.

I don't think I agree with the pass rush specialist part. I think we have more size and athleticism overall at the position. Barring injury I think DE will be strong against the run and pass.

That was a really good article. He knew the injuries UT dealt with last year, was aware of who had struggled to stay healthy in the offseason, used insightful stats, and overall had great insight into last season and into the uncertainties around this season.

The Fulmer bootlicking though talking about the halcyon days of 2007 was unbearable. This gem:

"At the least, he [Jones] has brought the program back to Fulmer’s 2002-05 levels. Does he have a 2006-07 run in him?"

Fulmer went 19-8 in '06-'07. Jones has gone 18-8 the last 2 years. Fulmer's last 4 years on the job he was 29-21, Jones' last 4 years he was 30-21. The only meaningful differences in those periods was Fulmer gets a point for winning a division title but I'd argue Jones gets a point for inheriting a dumpster fire, the likes of which Fulmer never saw.

I feel pretty comfortable arguing Jones has Tennessee back to the level where Fulmer left it. Arguing that Fulmer was an 'excellent' coach when UT fired him is a bit ridiculous (he was an excellent coach in the '90s). Just as it would be ridiculous to argue Jones has proven himself to be an excellent coach now.

Like him or not, Dormady can throw the ball. I don't think he has to be able to run to captain this offense. He moves decently well in the pocket from what we've seen. It's his decision-making that will determine his fate, IMO.

2/4 losses between UGA, LSU, fl, bama and win the rest, assuming average injury attrition and no East title...

Acceptable or not?

Acceptable? absolutely. I'd be pumped to see us win 10 in a season again. But I will say, it won't stop the Negas and talking heads from spewing BS about not winning the east.

Harbaugh had one of the most talented teams in football and lost to Iowa. He doesn't take much heat for that. I think SCAR is in the same class as Iowa.

Iowa has no where near the speed of even a mediocre SEC team. Those kids look like they were moving through molasses when we played them.
