I would love to know the best tool for evaluating OL. Hubbs said Smith and Roberson were the best and PFF said it was Kendrick. My huntch is PFF is the best thing to go by. I would love to see their grades every week for all our players.

What does it cost?

No idea about how good PFF is or how much they cost. Best thing to do is just to watch the offensive plays multiple times. Sure, we don't always know each guy's assignment, so it's imperfect, but it's easy to tell when a guy gets beat by his man or misses a block.

Jones seemed explosive off the ball at times, but really struggled sticking with and finishing his blocks in the run game at times.

Tatum just doesn't have the strength to hold up yet. He seemed like he was in position pretty well most of the time and played with alright leverage, but he just isn't powerful enough yet.

Kendrick looked like he blew one blitz pickup in the first half, but I thought he looked pretty good overall. He held his own in pass pro. He was solid in the run game.

I thought that Kendrick, Smith, and Robertson all looked pretty good and showed promise. I think our pass protection should look a lot better when Richmond gets back. He should be an upgrade over Tatum. I'm not sure what Jones' problem was. Hopefully he'll bounce back and take a big step forward

Shoop stepped into the batter's box at the beginning of last season with a Worth baseball bat from Walmart and managed to have success. .

One of the dumber things I have read here in a long time. That D started the year last year LOADED.

Did you watch him in the run game?

I'm not sure there's really anything to disagree with. Go watch the offensive snaps again. He was ok to good in pass protection. He was probably our worst run blocker Monday.

He's got a rep as a nasty guy, but he didn't put that on tape in week 1.

Jones has some mystical aura for some reason when it comes to UT fans. I live in Murfreesboro and am rooting for him as much as anybody. And don't get me wrong, I think he is a good OL. But fans have unusually high opinions of him that are not based on reality. I watched him closely. He did not have a great game. But I think he will be fine in the long run.

So... from a recruiting forum perspective...

Dormady, 2nd half. Potential.
Bituli. 23 tackles. Monster.
Calloway. Breakout.
John Kelly. Beast.
Darrell Taylor. Clutch.

Maybe I'm an uneducated idiot, but to me, I didn't see a lack of effort on the defense. I hated seeing them give up 1st down after 1st down, but I felt like that was more about GT than it was about Tennessee defense. I'm CERTAIN there is room for improvement, but at what point do you give credit to the 230 lb bowling ball Benson? That QB played well and was fast and elusive.

I wouldn't be surprised if GT ends up in the Top 25 this year.

By the way, they are 0-1 against the SEC this year. And Tennessee is 1-0.

Enjoy the good.

Excellent post.

It was the first game. The good guys won in spectacular fashion. bruin can talk about the missed kick by GT if he wants. The truth is if the officials called the clip in the back of Gaulden that was out in the open for at least 3 officials to see within 10 yards of it happening, there would have been no kick since the penalty would have pushed them back too far to even try, especially with that kicker. The officials obviously also had their agenda in numerous ways. The good guys messed that up.

It's up to Butch to fix Butch and the coaches on game day along with player personnel decisions. Callaway and Bituli took their initial poor decisions away and saved them and all of us. Both should have been named starters. There are gamers and there are show ponies. Both Bituli and Callaway practice hard and have great attitudes. They have performed well in limited roles in games last season. Our staff seemingly has not done well with some of the evals. The common thread for the staff over 5 seasons is Butch.

Jumper and Martin don't happen in games with Saban, Meyer, Fisher, Dabo, etc. using the same roster. For example, they don't take an elite HS CB and make him into a little used slot. He would play CB until proven that he can't. They don't take a highly talented RB/returner in HS and make a little used safety out of him. They adapt the O to his best abilities and use him in an expanded slot role until proven that he can't. Those two moves solve two of the biggest deficiencies the team has experienced over multiple seasons. That's what I want to see Butch do. Play the Warriors (intentional use) in their natural positions and stop with the square pegs in round holes, personal pets stuff.

Let's see if the university of Florida shows complete hypocrisy this weekend. Last years LSU game was cancelled on Wednesday due to the safety of the student athlete. Even though the storm showed no models of a threat to Gainesville.

This year the storm of the century is approaching Florida and expected landfall is early morning Sunday. The unpredictability of a storm could speed up and show sooner.

Shoop stepped into the batter's box at the beginning of last season with a Worth baseball bat from Walmart and managed to have success. Then players started dropping like flies. Important players. Especially the defensive front. By the end of the season he was trying to hit 100mph fastballs with a broomstick. Not going to judge him for not being able to hit Clayton Kershaw with a broomstick.
First game this season he is minus DKJr. and Tuttle against a crazy type of offense that we won't see again all season. He was trying to hit one of those crazy wiffle balls that dances. We get Tuttle back and saw lots of speed and potential from Warrior, Taylor, Batuli. So I think he will be stepping into the batter's box with at least a mid-level Marucci bat the rest of the season. I will judge him based on how well he performs under those normal circumstances.

Not sure if you're serious. He stepped in the batter's box last season with more athletes than he's ever had coordinating a defense. Wouldn't describe the group he inherited as a worth baseball bat from Walmart. He needs to get it in gear.

During times like this when there is so much heartache over a close win, It makes me feel better to think back on the '98 championship season! The Vols came out of the gate strong, beating the snot out of, a solid, Syracuse team. Arkansas was no competition and as usually the Vols whopped up on the Gators. Obviously that was all because we had a seasoned, 4 year starter at QB, whom we all knew would lead the Vols to a championship. Man those were the good ole days. Maybe someday the Vols will get back there. This isn't going to be there year because it's already decided, but I think I will watch the games anyway. You know, just in case! ;) Have a great day VN, Love you all!

Exactly

Def had talent to start and our defense was solid. We don't beat app st or Florida without defense shutting down 2nd halfs. By seasons end it was bad overall

You said he started the year with a "clunker"

I am not a bat expert. Bat reference might have been off for beginning of last season. Premise does not change. He performed well with a good bat. He struck out a lot later in the season swinging a broomstick. You want to judge him based on that fine. That's your prerogative. It's a good way to look foolish though. That is your specialty.

BTW, I am going to print out and frame Bruin calling one of my posts the dumbest of all time. Haha haha! That is awesome.

Going to chime in on the GT game. Pumped about Calloway, Bituli, Kelly, and Taylor. Not pumped about Abernathy, Martin, and Shoop. I'm upset with Shoop the most. Unique offense that we won't see again - true. However, letting them do what they did is not a good sign. No way to spin it. Hoping Shoop has much better things to offer against more conventional offenses going forward this year.

Jennings missing time is a big blow, but after last season, I'm not going to get too worried.

Shoop is the guy who said he never met a blitz he didn't like. Well, the one thing you can't do against a triple-option is blitz. I can understand why he struggled with it. His entire defensive philosophy runs counter to what you have to do to stop the triple-option.

Loaded? 3 players drafted off of it is loaded?

Also, we played good with all our pieces healthy. 2 of those 3 drafted guys didn't play at all last year.

Defense was fine until the injuries happened.

The D was solid early but still never for complete games. There were still lapses. It was never like a Florida D
