Jones has some mystical aura for some reason when it comes to UT fans. I live in Murfreesboro and am rooting for him as much as anybody. And don't get me wrong, I think he is a good OL. But fans have unusually high opinions of him that are not based on reality. I watched him closely. He did not have a great game. But I think he will be fine in the long run.

He has definitely been our nastiest OL when on the field the last couple years. I don't believe that is unrealistic.

I don't believe anybody thinks he's an AA atp, but the OL has consistently looked better when he's on the field.

Don't know where anyone got two game suspensions from.

Trevor Matich came on Nashville radio show yesterday and was talking about the Florida suspensions at one point. He said don't be surprised if this drags on longer than most think. He related it to "willful theft" and that once it became more than just one or two players it became bigger than what McElwain and the AD could control.

Something is wrong with Shoop's defense. No doubt about that. Injuries last year were a big part of it but there's something else that is off.

I'm starting to think that he plays the wrong players and/or the guys on defense don't know what they are doing all the time.

I am pretty confident that we had a terrible defensive gameplan Saturday. I guess my hope is that even though we saw the team get shredded last year towards the end of the season, Monday night had more to do with a terrible game plan against a unique offense ran by an underrated team and what we saw isn't a continuation from last year.

The Nebraska game actually gives me hope because in the middle of this 5 game skid by our defense was the Nebraska game where we held a ranked opponent in check. So in theory, the South Carolina, Vandy, Missouri and Kentucky games were due mostly to injury and the Georgia tech game was due to a terrible game plan. Right now, this is what I want to believe but I'm gonna need to see what happens the next 2 weeks.

Good post and I agree. Bad scheme for GT. What bothers me is the thinking that it was a good scheme with the whole off season to prepare. For some reason they thought staying with base defense with our player talent and depth would override GT's ability to run their offense. There was very little evidence in past performances to believe that may be true IMO. I obviously get grumpy about poor player usage.

It's fixable if they are capable.

I generally find the opposite. Most Vol fans I encounter in the Deep South are very negative.

Last year Tennessee lost 52 starts to injury. (Most in the nation.)

With Chance Hall, D.K. Jr and now Jennings, add in Josh Smith, Shy Tuttle and Austin Smith and the number is already at 38.

Not sure if we had any of these last year, but the web site that put out those figures included starts lost due to injury or suspension, so you can add one (Richmond) to our tally for 2017. Also, I think you can go ahead and count on us playing 13 games, so you could add one more each for Hall and DK. But I'm betting JJ doesn't miss 11 games, so that would decrease the number. Either way, we are already at probably 35-40...that's as many or more than a lot of teams had last year.

I tend to agree with both of you. The strategy we implemented was not successful. Just my opinion, but I think part of their reasoning was trying to get out of that game without injuries to our DL. Whatever the reason, the gameplan on D didn't work. Offense made matters worse by not getting 1st downs in the first half. Played small rotation at DT without Tuttle. With Tuttle back; traditional offenses from here on out; gaining experience from our young guys that looked good we are not in a bad spot. If we stay healthy and perform that poorly on D against the rest of our schedule then we can start talking about there being some serious problems. We are not there yet. Posters like Bruin lack anything resembling perspective.

Better to lose the game and stay relatively healthy than put all of their focus on a relatively meaningless OOC game and lose DTs to cut blocking, I guess. Butch and Shoop are lucky dudes because that defensive gameplan was horrendous and they still won. No major DT injuries either.

I watched the first half, I saw one bad rep on a draw play.

That one was especially bad, but the second run play of the game (JK was tackled for a loss) was another play where a DT basically brushed right past Jones.

The next play (QD's first incompletion) JJ's man got by him and hurried QD into a bad throw.

First play of the next drive, he dives at Brant Mitchell's ankles and whiffs (not that it mattered, was a TFL, but not a good play for him nonetheless).

Next play he gets owned on the draw play.

A couple drives later he had a nice block on Chandler's run when he pulled and got a clean shot on Mitchell (who was already engaged with Wolfe, FWIW).

Got beat by the DT on a swim move a play or two later, but had help from Robertson picking him up and QD got the ball out quick.

Sealed off the LB on the next play for JK to have a nice run.

Did a good enough job down blocking on JK's first TD.

First play of the second half makes good initial contact with the DT, but loses his balance, DT gets off the block, and gets JK. Still a decent run. But if he keeps his feet, JK might get to the second level of the defense.

around 2:20 in the 3rd quarter, he lets a blitzer run right by him without getting a hand on him (we had 5 guys to block 5 men on that play...just a missed assignment there). Luckily the pass was a quick hitter.

He did a great job going in at RT in a pinch and getting a nice block on Callaway's first TD

First play of the next drive, back at LG, whiffs on a LBer. Tackle around the LOS.

8:15 in the 4th he let the DT drive him back into the pocket and disrupt Dormady's throw a bit. Pass is almost picked off. Not a blown play, really. But not great either.

Maybe his best block of the night on our last drive with 1:58 to go. Blocks the DT down out of the play and helps give JK the nice cut back lane for a big play.

2OT first play he doesn't do a good enough job getting to the MLB and sealing him off. If he does, JK has a hole big enough to run for 10+ easily. In Jones' defense here, Mitchell read and reacted pretty quickly. But that's a block he's gotta make in SEC play.

Gets good enough push on the last TD also.

Look, I'm a Jack Jones fan. I wanted him on the field more last year. But after watching his play week one, I can see why he wasn't out there more. He plays hard, that's obvious. But he seemed to lose his balance too easily and had trouble finishing blocks. He had a few nice moments, but it wasn't a good night for him overall.

Luckily, most of his mistakes seem to be the correctable kind. Like I said, it's obvious he plays hard. But he's gotta learn to stick with and finish his blocks better.

Because two games put them all back against us.

Agreed on all counts here.

Loaded? 3 players drafted off of it is loaded?

Also, we played good with all our pieces healthy. 2 of those 3 drafted guys didn't play at all last year.

Defense was fine until the injuries happened.

Yes it wasn't loaded with 4/5 star players everywhere.

Shulers badge says, Pre-game only.

Dobbs pass says Bench access.

Peyton just says "Dont you know who I am?" No pass needed.
