Interesting stuff on Finebaum. "Butch coaches erratic.. has a crack in his foundation.. not good under pressure and late game situations.."

I would agree with all of that. I think Haney's article, while a very bad look for 247 and something that simply didn't need to be published, was probably spot-on in its assessments that Jones is incredibly insecure. His body language during the 2015 OU game is the worst I have ever seen from a coach. He's gotten better, at least outwardly, but I would imagine he's still very unsure of himself on game days when the stakes are high and his team has a chance of winning.

It's not even the scheme. He won't play guys that fit his scheme because of loyalty. He's got young talent that can make plays off of sheer talent. He wants guys in that won't make mistakes but this is the SEC. If you don't have the athletes you won't win.

Florida played two true freshman CB a lot of the game. Marco Wilson held Callaway in check and the other one ran a pick back for a TD. Cleveland and Franks are sophomores. Is Franks a finished product? No, I would bet Del Rio knows the offense better. But you've got to play your talented guys in this league.

Alabama started Hurts last year. He can't throw as good as JG at all. They didn't ask him to run the whole playbook or be all everything.

Tennessee has a star at RB, veteran O-line and Talented WRs. Coach your young QB to be a distributor and groom him on the job. This isn't hard at all. Call better plays from the booth and don't worry about who can check into what(#12 checks aren't setting the world on fire BTW) .

When you have rational, thought out posts like this explaining your position you are much more tolerable. I can’t disagree with anything you said.

Great post.

What's sad is this is absolutely true. Most Tennessee thing ever would be to win the East at 10-2 and have Butch do an ESPN 30 for 30 how our fans ran him out of town.

Think about that for a minute. Can you imagine a scenario where Butch suddenly became a good gameday coach? Because that's what we're talking about here. He just doesn't have the talent for managing quick decisions required during a game. He's been here 5 years and made zero progress in that area. He doesn't 'outcoach' anybody. I don't see it starting soon.

But hey, he could suddenly turn the corner. At this point, it would be one of the bigger surprises of my life.

This is also why we still have glaring depth issues in year 5.

Slightly off topic, but VFL Lee Jenkins is running for mayor of Roswell, GA where I live. He has had a successful career as an investment banker and now is pastoring a church. If interested, you can check out his story on www.voteleejenkins.com.

I don't think he's unsure at all. I think that he is hard-headed and stubborn and won't change stuff that needs to be changed during the course of a game.

Disagree. The stubbornness is a Sunday-Friday trait. He freezes up on Saturdays and makes bad decisions.

$10.5 million at stake.

Fire him = $7.5 million owed to CBJ.

He leaves for another job = CBJ owes UT $3 million

Only gets the $7.5 if we send him packing and he doesn't get another job, I believe. If he gets another position, we pay the difference between his salary and the $2.5 / year that we owe on the buyout. If he gets another HC position and makes over $2.5, then no harm no foul.

Pretty much every single O lineman we have playing for us has gotten better.

Josh Malone got better. Josh Smith got better. Jujuan Jennings got better. Callaway got better. Dobbs got a lot better. Barnett got better. Vereen got better. Danny O got better. Brian Randolph got better.

There's not a lot of guys who are gonna be bench warmers for a year then explode into 3rd round draft picks as a junior like Malone.

There's definitely something going on with personnel usage. I'm not sure if it's development as much as it being afraid to play guys who you know are going to make mistakes. We aren't getting our 2's enough snaps.

Agree!

He has made some really horrible ones. But he didn't call the plays; he definitely could have vetoed the call, though. He errs on the side of conservatism, almost always. Maybe that is a characteristic of being unsure.

He was at his best as a coach in 2013 and 2014. Team was at its best in 2015 but you could see the bad coaching decisions rearing their head by that point.

He doesn't handle pressure well at all. There was no pressure in 2013 and 2014 (other than to make a bowl) and he coached really well for the most part, IMO.

I don't think that's true. That's usually a clause for assistants. Not for head coaches.

He’s an 8 win SEC coach. Might sneak in a 9 win season once every 5 years or so.

His career conference record will always hover at, or just below .500.

And many called it the day he was hired. A guy who wins 9-10 games a year at Cincy is going to have 2 wins lopped off right away when he starts competing in the SEC. And most of his tenure has been vs a really weak East.

Absolutely. You will never see a weaker East than you have the past few years. Still haven’t been able to capitalize.

Agreed. So the real question is does Currie allow it to continue until seats are empty, because it's headed that way eventually.

You seem to bring a lot of stuff from the FF.
