Jack Jones is overrated. Boulware or Thomas should have played after first quarter. If we want to criticize staff this is where to begin.

Boulware def deserves more snaps.

Imo this offense inconsistency is a product of Butch mistakes last year with lack of rotations/playing time for future players.

QD, Callaway, Boulware, Jones deserves more reps so that they could be more prepared this year.

Defensively Taylor, KP, Bituli, Warrior needed more reps to prepare for thisnyear

The great coaches work in the guys they will need in future. Instead we have so many guys learning on the job as critical starters.

Butch won't do it but he needs to work in thr freshman/soph DBs because next yr there is no Martin, EM or Wiggins next yr so you have to play those guys next season.

15 first downs and 250 yards in 3 quarters against Mercer is not elite. Their offense is awful. They are not a great team, in fact they're borderline bad. Their decent defense brings them up to average.

Fixed it. I meant to put a period. It was 250 and 15total. 140 yards in the first 3 quarters.

And the OP was about auburn, not the auburn defense.

No. It was about defense. Catbone said Uga had the second best defense in the SEC

You're preaching to the choir on not letting the qb keep the ball in this offense. Worley, Dobbs, QD, don't care. Qb has to keep it.

I don't think keeping the ball helps if the QB can't run. There was a read option in the Florida game where everyone crashed in on the hand-off and QD kept the ball, which was the correct read. The safety from UF came up from WAY off the line of scrimmage and tackled QD for no gain.

QD keeping it didn't keep the defense honest. They learned they could crash down on Kelly and still stop the QB keeper.

I've come around to your way of thinking that this offense can't work, at least as it's currently being called, with a QB that can't run. The read option for the QB should never be called with Dormady in the game. There are other ways to keep the defense honest (run pass options and play action come to mine) besides having someone run the ball that isn't a threat.

Without a mobile QB they need to go under center in short yardage as well. Unless you've got Dobbs or Tebow in the game the QB should be under center if it's less than a yard to the first down. The sweep option from the shotgun on 3rd and inches had to be one of the dumber play calls I've seen in my lifetime.

Coaches are responsible for putting the players in position to be successful. Coaches HAVE to know the situation.

On the first sequence (first and goal from 1 foot line, 8:19 to go in the third when the ball is snapped, Florida has nine in the box, 4 stacked at the edge of our strong (right) side) the play was a pass to Callaway into dbl coverage, almost intercepted. The get taunting penalty so it's 1st and goal again from the 6 inch line. THAT is the play that we get a false start on, then we proceed to throw 3 more passes, the last of which was an interception, which is the LAST thing you can do in a 6-3 ballgame.

You are correct on the 1st down. I watched on YouTube again at lunch and fast forwarded to that series, so my bad. But again, UF had the box stacked and UT had one on one matchups on the outside. I have no problem attempting to exploit those type of matchups with a WR like Call away, but it did not look like he ran a particularly good route.

Then we throw the pick 6 which shouldn't have been called.

The pass was to an open receiver.

Then we throw three times inside the 10 on our last drive, when we NEEDED to run clock AND score. We were KILLING them with the run.

I am a run first advocate but running from inside the 10 is just not the same as running between the 20s. And yes, I agree, you would like to run some clock while you score a TD, but the key is scoring the TD, so when you see that UF is giving you a gaping hole in the middle of the secondary you throw the ball and trust your defense to win the game. D had played well and there was not going to be much more than a minute left on the clock. And unless UT had missed the EP, a FG wouldn't do UF any good.

And you know very well that I never said we should take the pass play out of our offense, but there are times when you need to run and not pass. Surely you know that?

My comment was a joke. I did not think you were condemning the passing game altogether. This is just a football discussion between 2 Vol fans. I respect your opinion, I just happen to disagree. You Moran. :)

That was one example. On the next read looking play, you could see the DE and LB hesitate. It's not about gaining yards, it's about making them guess. Kelly started really torching them after the qb keeps by QD.

Completely agree on short yardage. But even if we stay in shotgun, we need a goal like package.

I found the mother of all Swiss rolls.

Probably Fromm. Something to be said I think (to our benefit) for a true freshman making his first SEC road start.

On one hand I want Eason, first game back from injury, basically first real game since 2016, but he's an amazing arm and that could do some damage to our Secondary. On the other I want Fromm, more of a game manager, first true sec road game, never played in a stadium like Neyland, but he's more mobile and probably a little safer/accurate than Eason.

Finebaum
On Chip Kelly

Said he knows him and sees him each week. Said he will be a factor in coaching searches in SEC. Said don't know specifically if it will be Tennessee or not.

I heard an interview with eric Ainge and he talked about Cut having hand signals for certain situations. A signal saying no check offs was needed there. He also said there was signal for not taking a sack on 3 down in the red zone and QD did that as well.

I heard there was a hand signal that fans give to coaches when they lose to FL on the last play of the game 2 out of 3 years.
