I come from a single parent household. My Mom averaged $14k annual income. She qualified for but refused any government aid. First government aid that she would allow was my student loans. She only allowed that because I promised her that I would make good on all my student loan debt.
I worked very hard to make good that promise. I still work hard for my family.
You want nice things in America, work hard, get an education and be prosperous.
My Mother's version of the American dream was for her children to have a "better life " than she did. What she taught my sisters and I was invaluable. I miss her... :salute:
A lot goes on now the Greeks frowned upon, Nobody is perfect but they pretty much had it figured out way before Jesus hit the scene.
Why you hating so much on ancient Greeks? They were top dog for 350 years and were super advanced given the time. I am just saying that in today's dollars they have us beat. They took comfort in their gods also and believed in an afterlife. They also weren't perfect and guess what neither are we by a long shot.
My point was that every empire thinks they are hot stuff till they ain't.
My mom was also a single mom. I watched her work hard day in and day out. She had help along the way but she taught me to work hard and earn what I get in this world. She also taught me to be kind and generous to others. No matter how bad you think you might have it, there is somebody worse off than you. You might have nothing, but someone out there has less than that. There are plenty of ways to help without spending money.
Your mom sounds like she was a fantastic lady. Kudos to her for raising her kids to be the best they can be. :good!:
Thanks for sharing. I have a similar story, but my mother also had some health issues and did accept some government assistance. We had food stamps and lived in government housing, sometimes. She did whatever she had to do to keep us fed and safe and she was very loving and generous. She also instilled in us our work ethic and the importance of education. Two out of three of us are very successful. My youngest sister has issues, but that is more because of who she chose as a partner, than because of what my mother taught her. There were times that we would not have eaten without government assistance. I was ashamed of it at the time, but now I am proud of my mom for doing what she had to do. Some entitlements are deserved and there are many that are not. It is very tough to decide, obviously.
Ayn Rand said the same thing in "Atlas Shrugged" a decade before that in 1957. It is coming true before our eyes. Darth doesn't believe in God or the devil so it doesn't make sense to him.
Them Greeks that invented democracy had it going on for quite a while.
It makes sense, I just don't agree with it lol it's basically just your run of the mill sermon from the 1960s from an old guy feeling threatened by an increase of public freedom and ability to choose their own lifestyle.
One of the founding principles of this country is that people get believe/practice what they want religiously. Or to not do so.
There's no way to stop 90% of the stuff he's complaining about without putting in place rules to limit/infringe on other's freedoms.
And I'm willing to bet 80-90% of the people who listen to this and feel so persuaded just gloss right over the part where he talks badly about war.
Greek democracy was a joke though. It was only for the rich elites of the city state. The vast, vast majority of people had no voice. There were still slaves...like lots of them. In practice it was more of an oligarchy.
And that's not to mention the fact that democracy really only existed in Athens for a pretty short window. Most of the other city states were also oligarchies or dictatorships/monarchies.
For my money, give me the Ancient Egyptians any day. Think about this: Cleopatra (who was really a Greek, btw) actually lived closer to man walking on the moon than to the first of the great pyramids being built (by a couple hundred years). That's how old the pyramids are.
And they're still here. And the world's best scientists and engineers, even working with computers, still can't figure out how the hell the Egyptians made them using the tech available to them at the time.
Glitch...A pastor/mentor of mine always taught me that the only thing God can't help, is an unbelieving heart. Everybody will believe one day. That day will be too late.
