This week, the Vols hit the road and travel to a land filled with darkness, chaos and despair. Trolls nab napping babies from their cribs and turds leap from the earth and kamikaze the faces of unsuspecting passerby's. Yes... we're going to Alabama. Slowly but surely, Bama is no longer the Bama of old, and Tennessee is not the Tennessee of the last 15 years. The field may not be level, but the peaks and valleys are not as high and on any given Saturday, they can appear dang near even.

Keys to Victory:

1. Battle Behind Center:
JM has had a rough year. In spite of having a world of talent, it just hasn't seemed to come together. Sure, there have been flashes, but there has been glaring inconsistency and the rumbling of fans wanting the next man up. The fact is, he has to be consistent in this game if he is going to get the victory. He doesn't have to do everything, but he can't be the reason they lose. Wait... who was I talking about again? Joe Mixon? Jalen Milroe? ... Yes.

These two quarterbacks share remarkable similarities in different areas, but are worlds apart in others. Milroe connects on more deep balls and is dynamic in the running game, but strangely takes more sacks than a whole cul-de-sac sac of dads trick-or-treating with their kids. We know how Joe is. He must pass for at least 175 yards to keep the defense honest. It's time for a deep ball or two. We know Heupel can scheme that open against Bama. Jalin Hyatt says "hi". Milroe has been less effective in the run game recently and some think that he is a bit beat up and protecting himself or unable to scramble as he did earlier in the season. When it comes down to Mixon vs. Milroe, whoever has the better play gives their team a decisive edge that only turnovers can equalize.

2. Defensive Line: For Tennessee, the key is to pressure, contain, and bring Milroe down. He can't escape for 20 yard gains and he can't pick up 3rd and long with his legs. Tennessee will likely be fighting a crimson tinted whistle all night and good luck getting more than 1.5 holding calls, regardless of what actually happens on the field. On the flip-side, the main concern for the Tide is slowing down Jaylen Wright. They will not be able to do that, because he is a beast-man who scored against Purdue (never forget) and doesn't give a damn about the whole state of Alabama. Tennessee needs to rush for over 200 against a Tide defense that is only giving up 105.3. Tough ask... but it can be done.

3. Turnovers: Tight game. Can't win if you are on the wrong side of this. Alabama is +.43 in turnover margin this year. The Vols are +.17. Tennessee needs to find themselves +2 here.

4. Dee: Nick Saban would likely kill the nearest human if Dee laid his hands on a punt or kick, but if Dee did happen to... it would be a good thing.

Prediction: I've seen all of the Tennessee football this year, and I've not seen a complete, 4 quarter game well executed yet. I'm not looking for perfection, but entire quarters have gotten lost in the Bermuda Triangle. Sorry folks, but you can't beat Bama with your best 3 quarters of football, and I'm not sure we get even our best 3 quarters at this point. Solid game, but unless you see Milton outplay Milroe, 200 rushing yards and +2 in the turnover margin...

so, i'm not so confident this week, and i'm going to predict Bama wins.

but, i'm not really upset about it...and i think it's because i know we CAN win this game. we're capable of winning of this game....and outside last year and this year, it's been a long time since i haven't just penciled an "L" next to this game.

and i take last week and will use that as evidence of why i think we can win pretty much any game we play....outside the penalties and mistakes, i was very impressed we were able to out-physical the supposed more physical team....and that our defense stood up nearly every time it was asked to do so.

that all said...the biggest problem i have with this game is that until we prove we're not one dimensional, we're one dimensional....and the play calling late last week tells me they're not confident in Joe right now.

i don't think the margin for error is all that wide for either team, but i think ours is more narrow than Bama's, simply because they've at least shown they can throw the ball down field and and it may only take a play or 2 in this game to put it out of reach for us.

sprinkle some bryant-denny officiating, considering the amount penalties we've committed this year...and it's a tall task.

defense keeps us in it...

It's not play calling

It is until they start using the TE and RB in the pass game more frequently. Those two positions are the check downs into the open zones. Those plays have to be called by Heup/Joey since Joe is incapable of doing it himself.

Fact. Doesn't matter if you agree or not.

they don't call 'check down plays'.......they're part of the play that's called.

I'm about to go play in a over 30 soccer league so updates might be coming tonight or tomorrow.
yeah just checking on those of us over 50, or getting up there in age... Still recovering from a partial rotator cuff tear from over a year ago and a very old herniated disk in my C5-C6... I've had to alter my workouts to offset...
Hopefully Mincey can play this weekend and no one else other than Bru and Pili are out...

Idk, I just feel like unless our pass attack takes an unexpected leap forward, I just dont think it sets up well for us. I pray im wrong though
I think there's a decent amount of timing as an issue. That can be fixed quickly. Only takes a spark. WRs need to do better is other aspects as well. I'm with you that maybe coaching comes into play. Maybe.

I don't think we can score 34 on a weak defense, much less Bama

Hoping the defense plays an exceptionally terrific game!

People keep acting like rigged officiating didn't cost us two touchdowns in the first alone last week. (I ran out of patience tallying them all after that.)

Beginning with GA last year, the modus was established and then imitated: Intentionally foul Vol WRs every down and the Birmingham Office's officiating and review crews will deliberately turn a blind eye.

This was the solution devised after Heup destroyed Saban's defense. And Saban's specialty is DBs. The key to that game was that a couple of times they actually called PI on Bama in flagrant cases. They did not call offensive PI on Bama on one of Bama's TDs (when the Bama WR pulled the Vol defender down to the ground by the back of his jersey); otherwise the game would not have been as close last year.
