'24 Recruiting Forum: Official Arkansas Pregame/Game Thread

Was just thinking about the difficulty in running 2 minute hurry up offense with those super wide WR splits bc you can only run sideline routes from the inside WRs and communicating in hurry up all the way out past the numbers is a chore.
Maybe. But if the tight end hangs on and/or Nico doesn't throw behind the open wr over the middle we had a good chance to score.

The plays were there, players didn't execute.

Burning 15 seconds after the long pass to Thornton (the refs waited a LONG time to wind the clock too) was a coaching issue on our hurry up for sure. But we seemed to be in positions to win if the players hadn't executed poorly.

Hooker also wasn’t his best in 2021. Not sure why we expect Nico to be like that his 6th game in.
I remember hooker as being pretty great in 21 but Oline getting him killed a lot

Pretty similar spot Nico is in but with worse stats either way.

I know we’ve had our insiders in here talk about how Elarbee can’t recruit OL. WR apparently suck for 2 straight seasons. At some point, all this issues point to the offensive staff. The fact that Heupel can’t get the damn offense working well, is alarming. How bad will we be when Banks leaves for a HC job this offseason??
Idk obviously we see how things play out but if it doesn’t improve. Heuo has got to make changes. Hate that I’m going to give this guy credit but Dabo made changes when things were stagnant and won titles. Fulmer was stubborn and we saw what happened there. I guess we’ll see what happens.

But comparing a senior to Nico is unfair. Long way to go this year.
A senior, unranked 5'10 QB from NMSU. Nico is a Sophomore in reality. He makes 2M a year to play QB. He's a 5*. He's walking out with Morgan Wallen in Neyland.

I expect him to play better. Arch is proving the rankings correct atm. And this year is a wash.

My biggest concern, and my biggest point of confusion, is I cannot for the life of me understand why we stopped using tempo. It’s been our identity for 3 years under Heupel, and he started to shift away from it some last year.

I thought it was just because of Milton, but that’s clearly not the case. I’m not sure Heupel’s offense works if we don’t commit to his style. We can’t half-ass it. Heupel may think in his head he doesn’t trust Nico or the OL, but so what? Just run your freaking offense.

It was crippling in the 4th quarter where we had a drive going but instead of going fast we slowed it down, got 2 false starts, and gave Arkansas time to get their defense set and stop us.

Stop doing this ******** and go back to operating under what found you success.
The monotonous same play up the middle over and over only works if you haven't given the defense enough time to get ready.

Yup. That simple really. But Nico can still be awesome as well. It’s quite sad to see people give up on a freshman in start number 5 when his oline and WRs played like hot trash at times.
I’m more disappointed in the playcalling that the QB play. Where are the screens like Milton torched Kentucky with? Where is the creativity? We literally don’t even look like the same offensive play style as 22 or even last year… I hate to tell everyone but we aren’t talented enough to play straight up vanilla.

Conversation would be different if tonight went differently 🤣 but that’s just ifs

Hooker 5 games: 68%, 883, 10/1, 2 rushing TDs
Nico 5 games: 69% 892, 7/2, 1 rushing TD

Milroe is Bo Nix with a worse arm for short/mid range throws and better athleticism. If he didn’t play for Bama, he’d be an electric watch on a 10 in G5 team. He won’t win a title at the college level and has less a chance to be a productive NFL QB than Nix. I guess he’s a “good” college QB in the same way that anyone else who fits that same vein is.

I mean yeah I don’t care what they do in the NFL. Tebow, Manziel are examples of incredible college QBs who couldn’t cut in the league.

But who are the good college QBs if Milroe isn’t on the list?

Can't say this enough. Without tempo, running the same few plays over and over doesn't seem to work. We hardly ran any screens all night.

Manning hasnt played a team worth a damn. What miss st and ulm?

That doesn’t include Hooker not playing the first game. So technically I only did the first 4 games.

So I helped Nico a little lol
Still proves what I was saying. My only point is Hooker being a 3 star on paper is obviously ******** but everyone acts like Heupel made him. He was under valued.

You're basically a fahr Barnes kind of fan tonight.
I don’t think we should necessarily fire Heup. But I think we probably will be in a season or two bc of performances like this. He can still grow, but seems like he’s regressed since he’s been here. I’ll own it, hope I’m wrong. I hate this and hope we win out, I do not revel in our losses. I prefer to eat the crow.

If he goes 8-4 or 9-3 every year we’d be retarded to fire him with what the alternative has been for 20 years.

Kirby Smart lost to a 2-3 unranked USCe team (that finished 4-8) in Y4 at home.

These performances aren’t exclusive to Heup as a HC.

You're right and if that's what we settle into it'll be fine. I'll just keep sliding more and more into baseball and basketball than football.

UGA has a worse history than us and canned a guy doing that and ended up with Kirby. Not exactly an exact comparison for a litany of reasons, but this football program has no excuse to settle for mediocrity. It has as good of money, fan support, facilities, and general backing as anywhere in the country. Only thing it misses is fertile backyard recruiting grounds - something that every decent coach in our history has overcome. If we can’t be a yearly playoff team in this new format, what are we even playing for?
