'24 Recruiting Forum: Official Ohio State Pre-game/Game Thread

There's nothing to learn, good grief is right.

We didn't have the talent, we didn't have the coaches to overcome the talent gap. The talent gap isn't going to correct itself, we're recruiting at the same level we always have for the most part.

Problem is the talent isn't being developed at a concerning amount of positions on both sides of the ball.

And as I stated before we'd have killed 5 years ago to be here....... And I appreciate that.

But let's not pretend that it all comes down to some epiphany, something we need to learn........ This is an internal issue that Heupel either will or won't address. I'm very worried that he has your mindset.
These things happen in stages. We are a playoff team. We're not a championship team. Now Heupel and White can assess what is needed to get to Ohio State and Georgia level. I think they'll invest enough to get there. I doubt they're happy where we are and want to take this thing higher.

Banks is way out of his league and it shows when he goes against good o coordinators. Chip Kelly schooled him and showed this.
Eh, against equal and marginally better talent he was elite this year. In the losses:

Arkansas - put that blame on the offense. Defense played more than better to win.

UGA/OSU - just complete talent mismatch made coaching look bad. LB and Safety play tonight in particular, was awful.

And with Alabama they had the better talent but Banks found a way with what he had.

Most every other game defense was elite this year.

When did it change?…we’ve flexed/leaned on Sampson all year no issues..if you take away our run nothing is left..only me and @TrippieRedd that I’ve noticed has stressed this…going into the playoffs one dimensional was something that couldn’t happen and…..it happened…if it weren’t for Sampson in some of these games this season..they would have been a losses..he’s by far our best work horse but he can only do so much.where was the creativity that JH was grinning about in the new conference?..how could this not be on JH?…we had two weeks to prepare and only drum up 17 points?…give me a new OC who won’t micromanage our 5* QB that’s being paid a million dollars.
Sampson and the defense for the most part have hid our weaknesses.

7-10 point wins against mediocre teams. Tonight should raise eyebrows.

Like I said, we are good, but not elite. Hit the portal.

Pili was a huge loss as well.

At the end of the day there’s a talent gap, but there’s not a 25 point talent gap. Period. Coaches gotta figure out what’s not working on the road. Next year we have UF, Bama and UGA on the road. Gotta win one to make the playoffs again most likely. Figure. It. Out.
Totally agree.
More problems than just a talent gap.
Not gonna claim I know the answers but it’s not my job to either, just hope Heupel figures it out.

He looked elite against bad teams, save Bama. He looks great when he can pressure with 4. His defenses are vanilla as it can be. Want to watch a dynamic, aggressive defense. Watch the game and watch OSU. They blitzed, stunted, sent rushers from everywhere. Meanwhile, banks sent 4. We'll never win anything of significance as long as he's here. I've said it for a while. We're 4 years into it, same book, same chapter. I just pray he gets a head coaching job. I dont see it though because programs that would hire him won't pay him what he makes here.

I want to hope you're right. I know what White wants........ But Heupel has been a very loyal guy, some changes are definitely needed.

They do happen in stages. And recruiting upticks are the lead indicator. Improve the roster and develop players.

We've been at the forefront in many aspects but it hasn't spurred the next level. That either happens with recruiting or development.

The sky isn't falling. But we aren't taking the next step.......... Yet. Tonight was a huge gut punch.

It's not the offense that needs revamping. It's Nico needing to move to year 2 and knowing how to drive the Ferarri better
Sorry but we don’t have a Ferrari!
Nico will know how to drive better in year 2 as a starter but unless we make some big upgrades he’ll still be driving a Chevy Camero

or we can get the smu/indiana draw

Careful some people might tell you to leave for saying we need a better DC lol. You’re spot on though.

I think we have decent developers, but we desperately need some recruiting mercenaries. I like the idea of a dedicated recruiting staff with the staff reductions being gone. Bring in the talent and let our coaching staff develop.
What have we excelled in the development department??
D line— yes
Running back- yes
Anything else? I’m not to sure

Lol, many on here have been hammering me for my banks take for a while. But I've got thick skin. I was chastised for my take on Butch Jones, Jeremy Pruitt, Pretty Holly. I can take it because I know I'm right.

He had talent on defense to compete against UGA. That was gameplan, playcalling and lack of adjustments. He got schooled.

It's really not that hard. Figure out how to block 4 and you win.
And it is the 4 from the same set. Never any overloads or spread the ends wider, just lines up in the position each time. Does drop an end in certain zone calls but not their strong suit.

Now is the time to make the changes while we have recruiting momentum and while we are still technically growing(regrowing) as a program. It will be a lot easier to get a high profile name now than when we’re trending downwards.

Dropping the ends in zone was such a bad call today. Zone in general never works for us cause we can’t get to the QB. Now some zone blitz every now and then could have helped but you know how banks is with blitzing lol

Yep, like another poster said. OSU was stunting, sending 5 and 6 man blitzes regularly...banks sending sending 3 and 4 with no stunts and playing zone much of the game. Just a terrible gameplan against a team with 3 1st round receiver talent. Will Howard made some throws but mostly looked good because we let him sit there and pick us apart.

It’s so frustrating to think about. Like Banks might as well have kept a ps5 up there in the booth and picked plays from coaches suggestion on ncaa25 cause he couldn’t have done any worse.

To me there’s two glaring positions coaches that need to go.

Oline. What can you say? A veteran oline and 5 star Tackle and they were bad to average at their best. Only Cooper played well the entire season. Just unacceptable 4 years in.

WRs. Drops. Can’t get open. What can you say? WRs underwhelmed last year too.

Other debatable positions.

OC/QB. Hard to say. As I still think that’s mostly a CJH thing. Maybe we still could explore someone else with different view points though. Could be a healthy thing.

Lbs. the main weakness overall on our defense. They flash at times but man are just flat out ugly at times. We have talent there not a lot of depth. Need to improve the room but I think coaching is lacking.

Dbs. Very good CB play overall. Saftey held it down better than I thought, think it’s just a lack of talent there. I’m fine with DB coaching this year.

Dline. He’s the man. But he needs to tell banks to shove it about “being the best dline in the country” it’s a contradiction at to his own coaching style which brings me to

DC. Man what a weird one. Obviously overall the defense was very good the majority of the year. However Banks has some glaring flaws. If his initial game plan fails him, he very rarely has answers. I think he also struggles in his coaching style. As mentioned before he seems to pamper his defense a bit, praising them a bit too much, maybe not hard enough on them. Who knows.

Lbs. debatable. Said it’s most likely a lack of talent and depth. @JacketVol. Reading is hard. I do think coaching is lacking, they take bad angles and **** coverage sometimes. But no I’m not ready to fire him

Did I hear correctly, that players were in the process of renegotiating NIL deals the week of this playoff ?

If so, let all them walk. Everyone of em
There were rumors of some team having to pay players to not enter the portal and play in the playoffs. Most assumed it was another school. Some thought it was OSU. Maybe it was the Vols?
