It's not a hard deal to make. Gruden either wants to coach CFB or he doesn't. If he does, UT will make the money happen. If he doesn't, get in front on the next guy.

Same with Butch. Not a hard decision. It's not about bowl game monies or a mitigation clause-- it's about making the not-so-tough call to fire someone who continually blows opportunities to win. He's not quitting. So stop wasting time and fire him.

Make the decision. Make the deal. And let's start digging out of this pit.

Just one man's opinions:

Gruden is Volnation's white whale.

Kiffin burned his bridges and will never walk the checkerboards no matter how much he lobbies for the job, rehabs his image, or grows up. He out kicked his coverage both with Layla and the UT head job.

Fuente has it good at VT and will not leave. Frost will not be able to resist the siren song of bringing Huskers back to their glory days. Brohm, Fleck, Campbell--not enough splash.

UT admin is finally going to get a football coaching hire right, including the resources for top line assistance coaches. It will be someone with proven P5 track record but totally out of left field. Think Bielema to Arkansas... but more successful at his new home.

Butch goes down with the ship and is fired only when new coach is in the barn.

Just one man's opinions.

So if Butch is fired by Monday, the new coach is in the barn?

Played 2 teams. Lost both games. You lose more than 2 games in that conference then you can’t play.

Going backwards. Struggling.

You're absolutely right. With that schedule, every year he plays 2 or 3 really tough games, but nothing else. And he hasn't consistently won those 2 or 3, thus no championships. That schedule has pretty much a built in 10 wins per year with even a good coach/team. And he is good, but nothing more.

Firing Mac seems insane to me. Do they really think they can do it with cause? They would have a really weak case. Seems like he could take legal action and get his full buyout.

Would also set a really bad precedent. Does the next guy want to worry about getting axed after winning the East two years in a row and the AD doing its best to screw him out of his buyout in the process?

Great points.

Jim Harbaugh is the most overrated coach in college football. Do you know how many championship he has won? ZERO!! The Pioneer league doesn't count. Zero championships!

We don't care about wins; we want championships. And he has NONE. The name is recognized because of the hyperbole surrounding him. And the hyperbole is because of his off-the-field antics.

If we had a coach who was beaten by 30 points we'd be screaming for him to be fired. And we have proof of it. If we had a coach making national headlines because he can't remember big-time recruits' names we'd be mocking him. We mock our coach for less. If we had a coach caught playing with boogers on the sidelines...I don't even want to think what would happen in light of how we treat our coaches.

Would he be better than Butch? Probably. But we want championships, not just improvement.

Stanford or Michigan were nowhere near championship level teams when he took them over.

If any coach had us finishing 12-1 in year 4 with a first pick QB returning the next season or delivered a NY6 bowl in year 2 Tennessee fans would be clamoring for a lifetime contract.

I think a lot of it is McElwain wants out as well.

LA VOL for AD!

This is what I'm afraid of, him leaving us at the alter. If it happened before, then I think it may not happen again. I think things are different this time for a few reasons:

Wife in his ear, heavily.
Peyton's involvement.
New administration.
ESPN financial woes.
Less of a rebuild.

If he cares about the VOLS, he should not be playing any ego stroking games, especially with Florida possibly in the mix, now.

If that happened, do you not think we would be much better off than we are now. Got to risk and go for it. I did it in my business when the industry was crumbling. People thought it was crazy but I had a lean operation while all the competition was overloaded from their time when things were good and couldn't recover. Saw almost 30 competitors go out one by one while one other as well as us were still standing. Safe hire means more of the same or maybe 8 wins without losing 8 at best with occasional 10 win season every decade. At my age, can't afford that. Go for the freaking brass ring or go home.

Liked.

Correct! Quit being such a wuss and get it done Currie and do it now.

I mean, wouldn't it be basically impossible to prove he lied about the death threats? Where does Florida come up with cause?

I also think your second paragraph is an important point. We as fans like to make super emotional decisions, and sometimes we're right about when to cut bait, but there's a reason ADs are more cautious by nature. It seems obvious Mac isn't winning the playoff or an SEC title at UF, but you try to weasel out of what is a massive buyout on a coach who won his division his first two years, what kind of message is that sending? What do you imagine Jimmy Sexton and other agents will be telling clients about going to Florida?

I admit to wanting them to keep him because I think it is better for Tennessee in the long run, but even trying to set aside my own biases, that's an awful look just from a business perspective. It's a massive risk that is really probably not worth taking unless they know for a *fact* they have someone better. And even if they have Frost on the hook, they don't know for a fact they have someone better.

If McElwain wants to leave, which has also been a rumor out there, then of course it's a different situation. But firing him and trying to wring "cause" out of him talking about death threats seems incredibly short-sighted.
