Rep. Giffords of Arizona shot

The jewish angle makes some sense (if that could be said about such a tragic event). If he were simply a rapid right winger, a conservative Dem is an unlikely target. However, if you are an anti-Semite loon the targeting makes a bit more sense.

If he were simply a rapid right winger, a conservative Dem is an unlikely target.

The judge that was killed and the Congresswoman have both received death threats previously for their politics. Giffords' office window was smashed leading up to the health care vote (she was in favor).

They were both moderate... BUT, they both lived and worked in a very conservative district.

Article from 2009 on John Roll:
In February, when U.S. District Judge John Roll presided over a $32 million civil-rights lawsuit filed by illegal immigrants against an Arizona rancher, the Marshals Service was anticipating the fallout.

When Roll ruled the case could go forward, Gonzales said talk-radio shows cranked up the controversy and spurred audiences into making threats.

In one afternoon, Roll logged more than 200 phone calls. Callers threatened the judge and his family. They posted personal information about Roll online.

"They said, 'We should kill him. He should be dead,' " Gonzales said.

Roll, who is the chief federal judge in Arizona, said both he and his wife were given a protection detail for about a month.

"It was unnerving and invasive. . . . By its nature it has to be," Roll said, adding that they were encouraged to live their lives as normally as possible. "It was handled very professionally by the Marshals Service."

At the end of the month, Roll said four key men had been identified as threat makers.

The Marshals Service left to him the decision to press charges but recommended against it. Roll said he had no qualms about following their advice.

The recommendation was based on the intent of those making the threats.

"I have a very strong belief that there is nothing wrong with criticizing a judicial decision," he said. "But when it comes to threats, that is an entirely different matter."

U.S. judiciary facing rise in death threats

Who? The sheriff's?

Sheriff certainly had a lot to say - Arizona as a "Mecca of bigotry" that Giffords, he, and several other public officials had been inundated with threats of varying degrees for a long period of time. Placed the blame on "vitriol." Said Pima Co was aware of the young man and his accomplice. Dared to suggest we are close to being ungovernable.

He certainly has some context from which to speak. Certainly far more context than any of us.

I know several Democrats who go into vapor-lock at the mention of Ralph Nader. To date, no "disaffected Left-Winger" has taken her / his Uzi-9 to Ralph.

There is an 800-lbs gorilla in the parlor, people, and the sheriff dares to say the Emperor has no clothes.

Sheriff Dupnik has been vocal that he would not enforce Arizona’s new immigration law. A Sheriff, who refuses to enforce Arizona Law unless he agrees with it, is complaining about how we are becoming ungovernable.

Sometimes truth is truly stranger than fiction.

Crazy, isnt it?

U.S. judiciary facing rise in death threats

As was posted earlier in this thread, lefties used harsh language RE: Giffords as well. Likewise, right-leaning politicians have been the target of violent acts and threats RE: HC.

Saying and doing are quite different. Making broad generalizations about the motivations of this individual is a fool's game at this point.

that seriously made me laugh. This coming from a sheriff whose whole county has been almost overrun by illegals yet he won't enforce the laws of this country. You're right, if anyone would know he would

The illegal angle has come up a couple of times now, and it needs redressing.

Illegals are fundamental to corporate neoliberalism. The reason we don't "shut down" the border is because big business / neoliberalism welcomes illegal immigration (everywhere) as a mechanism to drive down wages. It is tacitly applauded by the dominant culture.

It is hilarious to suggest the sheriff of Pima Co should be responsible for the illegal immigration problem along the Mexican / US border.

The dominant cutler is to resolve differences via the ballot box. Doesn't matter if you call yourself a Democrat, Republican, TP, Independent, etc.

He, as you say, stopped being a tool of the dominant cutler. (Which you advocate) His political persuasion makes no difference.

A nut is a nut (i.e., Tim McVeigh, Nidal Malik Hasan, Squeaky" Fromme, Arthur Bremer, Oswald, Charles Whitman, etc.)

.

Laughable. And expected (from you). And I'm certainly not talking about "cutler."

Not shopping is rebellion against the dominant culture as George W Bush begged Americans to do after 9/11. "Resolving" issues at the ballot box is probably the best joke of the day.

Gibbs - where do you get this stuff? I think you may actually have a mental disorder. You're all over the place. We're talking some serious left-field mumbo jumbo here. And, then you start talking about breaking people who are quite obviously more put together than you've ever conveyed yourself to be on this forum. Weird.

You would be wrong re: the bold above.

What "left-field" stuff are you talking about exactly?

I have always found it hilarious that discussing the real world generally elicits a "mumbo-jumbo" response. When confronted with facts from the real world, generall no real answers.

I was actually paying volinbham a compliment (somewhat obtusely, but it is my want) in that he generally engages a debate in the right way, unlike most. I believe he needs to get more grounded in the data and less in ideology, but he engages in the right way. Although he pooched today.

"somewhat obtusely, but it is my want"

Seriously?

Thank God you have such a tremendous understanding of the real world from a place of fact based on data free of ideology. I am sure that we can all benefit a lot from learning from what you say. The sad part is that we who do not suffer from delusions of grandeur will just never get it.

I don't think you need to suffer from delusions of grandeur to understand facts from the real world. Seriously.

What "mumbo-jumbo" were you refering to? Or are you having some delusions and think I'm gsvol??? :)

Actually, you might be slightly more delusional than gsvol.

Damn those Underground Railroaders....

Actually, the best joke of the day is Sheriff Dupnik as the pointy end of the spear regarding the US / Mexican border.

It is doubly hilarious when the dominant culture welcomes illegal immigration as a way to drive down wages. The "border" is one of the greatest con games in history.

If your gonna address it, why not tell the rest of the story?

The merits of illegal immigration are meaningless to the discussion. The point is a Sheriff deciding which laws he will enforce and which he will not. Then complaining about difficulties governing.

Sarah Palin's "Crosshairs" Ad is Focus of Gabrielle Giffords Debate - ABC News

Her district was in Palin's controversial crosshairs posting. Giffords even, prophetically, responded by saying there are going to be consequences to that kind of rhetoric.

It's absolute garbage that you think this psycho subscribes to anything that Sarah Palin says or promotes. It's a mere coincidence. That map is no different than any other use of "putting your sights on" or "targeting" or "in the crosshairs." It's a pretty common thing that is an unfortunate coincidence.

By all accounts, this guy was just out of his damn mind, and definitely wouldn't be on any Republican PAC websites.

The thing about America that pisses me off the most is that people are always looking for the man behind the curtain. Someone to blame. SURELY it wasn't this psycho faux-intellectual that should be blamed for his actions. It HAS to be Sarah Palin.

We are a society that will congratulate an individual for greatness, yet try to find 100 other people to blame if something bad happens.

It's not Right or Left wing organizations that drove this idiot to murder innocent people.

These pundits that try to place blame for political gain are the problem. Left and Right.

There's no Tea Party agenda here just as there isn't some far-Left DailyKos wackjob agenda. It's a crazy ******* acting on his own crazy agenda.

EDIT: Lawgator - not trying to single you out here, it's just kind of a sore subject for me that idiots on both sides use tragedy for political grandstanding.

Palin's aide says linking Palinj to this is "appaling" .... after having herself taken the crosshairs thing down off of Palin's website immediately after the shooting.

Would rather see her say they condemn this and hope that the political dialogue in this country will be more responsible in the future and that they will work hard to be a part of that. Clearly, they themselves worry that there is a link, given their actions.

I think it's more that it's an unfortunate coincidence and though it obviously wasn't the intended message, they realize it only further inflames the rhetoric. More, it's fairly outdated. Most of the people targeted in the elections lost. Simply put, it wasn't the cause, and wasn't wrong, but it doesn't do any good now.

Guarantee you there are hours of videotaped questioning of this guy by detectives and investigators. Will be quite telling when that comes out, I suspect.
