Richmond is taking down Confederate statues: Is this the end for other Confederate memorials?

Not your son or boy.

That you would use that term is pretty telling.

You literally have a second grade at best understanding of American History.

Well crawl back intop your basement. You obviously do not have anything intelligent to add to the conversation

Commtting genocide should not be celebrated.

Individuals can make mistakes and redeem themselves.

No, They were put up in the 1900s. Some vets were alive. But they were the equivalent to WWII vets of today. Not many left and all old. They weren't putting up monuments to their azz kicking.

Sorry you don';t know history. These are commonly known facts.

The confederacy was not American or America. It was an attempt by racist traitors to steal land from the U.S. and create a new non-US nation based on white supremacy. All traitors.

First nations people can not be traitors. They were protecting their rights against invaders.

Yet I'm still able to discuss the ridiculous comparison to yelling fire and I can speak of support for or opposition to the potus without fear of my govt. Being unable to make terroristic threats is not the same as completely eliminating free discussion

Tearing down statues does not constitute a prohibition on your free speech concerning slavery.

The bulk were built from the 1890s to to 1920. There still would have been plenty of veterans around. So again, your original statement was wrong.

I would tell you to stop being dumb but, from what I've seen of your work, I would say you're not capable of it.

I didn't say it did. You made the comparison to Germany so my question was valid yet remains unanswered. Are you willing to also sacrifice legit free speech in exchange for a few statues?

The civil war was 150 years ago. I honestly don't gaf about who fought in it, why they fought in it or anything about it other that it is a part of our history.
The civil war was 150 years ago yet Confederates are stil glorified in the schools, military bases named after slavers, war criminals and racists. An example of this is Fort Benning where thousands of soldiers go to for infantry school, named after a racist failure of a Confederate general, Henry Lewis Benning, who devoted himself to the premise that African-Americans were not really human and could never be trusted with full citizenship. Benning warned, for example, that the abolition of slavery would one day lead to the horror of “black governors, black legislatures, black juries, black everything.” This, he stated would place white womanhood at the mercy of African-Americans with the same rights as white people. Or Fort Gordon which is named after Confederate general, John Brown Gordon, the federal government venerated a man who was a leader of the Georgia Ku Klux Klan after the Civil War. Gordon campaigned that African-American Southerners Should have been stripped of the citizenship rights they had just gotten it Reconstruction. I can go on and on so don’t give me that whole “it was 150 years ago bs when the statues of those racist slaving traitors look down on us too this day.

Show us where the mean statue touched you.

Does this argument apply to the Confederacy as well? Before you call me a racist and accuse me of supporting slavery, realize, that to "preserve the Union", the North had to invade the South. People like to accuse the South of "treason", but the Confederate states weren't trying to destroy the United States, they just wanted to form their own country, their own government. When states today occasionally bring up the topic of secession, they aren't labeled "traitors". Hell, when states enact laws to directly countermand federal laws, they aren't called traitors. They're often lauded for sticking it to federal government. So it seems like the actions of the South matter less, and the fact they practiced slavery means more, at least to today's historians. That wasn't the expresses opinion of Lincoln, but that goes back to how we romanticize history.

Everything is about perception.

As for the statues, I no longer care. I'm glad slavery was abolished over a century ago. I wish people could just live in peace with each other, but that requires everyone wanting the same. Not just white people. Not just black people. Not just yellow, red, or brown people. All people. But I challenge you to occasionally try and see arguments from perspectives other than your own. Everyone wants their opinion respected, but few respect the opinions of others. Conversation achieves more than outrage.

I'm not following you. What free speech do I need to sacrifice in exchange for tearing down pro slavery leaders' statues.

The "North" did not invade the South.

The United States Army came to put down a terrorist rebellion lead by white supremacists who wanted to steal American land.

"They didn't want to hurt America, just steal a lot of its land and resources while torturing its citizens." lmao

Why should the black community be ashamed?

If its about the protest its not the black community protesting. It is America. All colors are upset. This little conservative circle jerk here is atypical of the average American.

The fact that you are calling what’s going on right now protesting shows how little you actually know.

Why stop there? The state of Washington and Washington , D.C. should change their names because they honor a slaveholder. Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, Louisiana, Georgia..All should be changed as they were named after monarchs. Pennsylvania was named after William Penn. I bet he did something unsavory. Alabama should change its name just because I hate Alabama.

Most people don't put much thought into the names of places. It really is selective outrage. Search for reasons, and you can find them. I could probably make an argument for renaming just about any place, given time.

Remind me when did George Washington led an armed rebellion against the nation he help found in order to preserve the institution of slavery???? Oh wait......he didn’t.

Do states have the right to secede? It's a valid question. The southern states felt they did have that right. Hell, there are people in California today that support California seceding. I haven't heard anyone call them traitors.

The South were not terrorists. It was not a terrorist rebellion. No more than the Revolution was a terrorist rebellion against England.

And yes, I can concede they were white supremacists. The majority of white Americans were, including Abraham Lincoln.

It wasn't "American" land. It was their land. Their states. States belong to the people, not the government. The power of the people is the cornerstone of our nation.

And they weren't "torturing citizens". Slavery was abhorrent, but I would think you would know they were not considered "citizens". Not even close.

The truth is, our actual views on slavery and racism are probably extremely similar. But you should read more of actual history than romanticized history. Lincoln, the Great Emancipator himself, thought blacks were an inferior race.

You’ll never get it and you’ll never understand.
I get it totally. Some people want to be victims and blame others for their shortcomings. I was brought up not to complain, but to "keep my shoulder to the wheel and my nose to the grindstone," and not to "live in the past, and or to concern myself with things that I could control." We were raised differently.

My brother and I were never coddled or babied. If we fell down and got hurt, we rubbed some dirt on it and went on about our business.

He led an open rebellion against the country of which he was a citizen. He, like all colonists, were subjects of the crown.
