Portland: George Washington Statue Torn Down, Draped in Burning U.S. Flag

A statue of George Washington, the first president of the United States, was toppled and draped in a burning American flag by protesters in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday evening.

Thursday marked the 21st day of protests in Portland sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. Two groups — Rose City Justice and Lavender Caucus — hosted a sit-in rally at Jefferson High School in the evening where community members shared their experiences with racism to a crowd of a few hundred. The group did not hold a march.

A separate group of about 20 people met at NE Sandy Boulevard and NE 57th Avenue around 10 p.m. at the site of a large bronze statue of George Washington. Some wrapped the statue’s head in an American flag and lit the flag on fire. Their numbers grew over the next hour until there were enough people to pull the statue to the ground. They quickly scattered. A KOIN 6 News crew found the statue face down and covered in graffiti. Portland police arrived a short time later.​

The Minnesota Twins announced Friday the removal of a statue in front of Target Field of former owner Calvin Griffith.

Griffith relocated the Washington Senators to Minnesota ahead of the 1961 season and remained owner until 1984. He died in 1999 at the age of 87.

Personally, I do think Sankey overreached on this and that this is out of bounds. There is so much reaction and particularly overreaction taking place right now that we are setting precedents that don’t need to be set. This race to see who can be the least offensive entity on the planet is going too far and too quick on certain levels . The desired result, systemic change or whatever the end game is here will be obstructed long term by these short term small Aunt Jemima kind of social justice “victories”.

Anyway, I don't understand how some of you are incapable of realizing what the argument is and generalizing it at all. Literally at the beginning of this thread we were saying "Okay but they are gonna end up going for all the statues", and two weeks later, here we are.

Do you really want a country where policy is dictated by private companies and organizations issuing threats to local, state, and federal governments to get whatever they want?

The majority of the country was behind protestors in the Floyd case but it has gone too far, the majority of people don't support this.
