Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Do 3 of the 4 Final Four teams and 4 of the Elite Eights get participation trophies?
Nope. They did not win it all, but I'll bet they dug down and did the best they could, but maybe made some mistakes or maybe the other team(s) were better. What they did not do as obviously highly ranked teams at the time, because they were if they're in the final 4 or 8 even if they came into the tournament ranked 64th, is lose dumb games because not smart playing, etc. and certainly did not do that multiple times in a short span. They do not turn off and turn on. They might not have the best game every game, but they are tuned to play and win. No excuses. No it happens . No it was an away game. No BS.

Y'all keep on asking dumb questions like that or making comments about not being concerned about a great coach because he is not your's or say that someone who notices how good they are is a fan of them. You're still be a participation trophy person. You like a personality and let what the "job to do" part slide whether player, coach, or whatever.

I was probably a bit young when Mears was playing King, Grunfeld, Jackson, Johnson, and Darden and some pretty good subs, but I wanted to win. By the time Devoe got there, I definitely wanted it. I never liked losing. My high school football team made it to the state semi-finals in AA football and lost by 2 in an away game by 2 points to a team who the next week beat Leroy Thompson and AE by 2 I believe. I hated losing that game and always will. Enjoy your participation trophy .

You might not realize it, but half of all those in the EE that “dug down deep” won a grand total of 3 times.

Great comeback, genius. It's about being great which Duke was (their coach had a lot to do with that like bammer's just retired coach) like them or not (and I don't except when Laettner drills it home and knocks off the cats nor do I like the gumps). I think UT can with Coach Barnes and I mean I think we could win it all if we will get focused as close to all the time as possible. The talent is there and the coach is good enough to do it too.

You be happy with maybe 2 games in the tournament. After all, at least we got to the tourney. Take your participation trophy and have fun.

I will keep wanting it all.
Easy, sport

People just dont understand basketball.... dont understand how difficult it is and how much goes into winning 6 games in a row against the best 64 teams. Coach K considered one of the best didnt win it all with 3 top 5 nba draft picks..... Cal has had x amount of nba players and struggled. You see the product of barnes teams top 10 team this year and have a chance to do something special if they come together at the right time. In the tourny though it just takes one bad shooting night or one team getting really hot and your going home. Just enjoy the season and we will see what happens in the tourny... everyone praises what Muss has done at ark and they was considered top ten team coming into the year and look what they are doing..... i get pissed watching them too but that south carolina team played like a team that got snubbed by the ranking committee monday. They got better looks at the goal than we did all night long. Energy felt off before the game also... I think the news dropping of the University being under investigation really had a negative affect on the over all mood of the team. We can say the Ncaa has no leg to stand on and plowman really gave it to them but it still has an affect. I think were fine and we will stick it to them but the energy was 100% off last nite mixed with a good SC team that felt disrespected for the 2nd week in a row.

Let me know when Barnes gets us past the Sweet Sixteen. Hope I’m wrong, but I doubt it ever happens. He’s alreadyhad two optimal opportunities and couldn’t do it.

Ok. If everyone else will just be happy to be in the tournament and not be that interested in a deep run or possible championship by a team and coaching staff who are good enough to do that, then I will go easy, sport.
You're too funny and have no idea what you're talking about about

Let me ask you a question: Would you mind missing the tournament completely one year if it meant we made it to the EE the following year?

Wow. At least you're honest about it
In his defense, your scenario isn’t really surrendering much. Think about how many times we’ve missed the tourney in the last 25 years. Giving people the option to have one slight let down season in exchange for the best season in program history and have a chance to make the final 4? Not many people on this site are going to turn that down. Now make it 3+ seasons without a tourney appearance and you may be getting somewhere.

This team has as much a chance to make the final four as the 2019 team. I like the fact we're putting a team on floor that has final four potential almost every year now. Notice the threshold was EE, and not FF.

I’m aware, which is why most hypotheticals are kinda silly. While I’m of the same principle belief as you, history would suggest that a typical threshold of our season is a S16. So you’re not only ensuring that a team goes past that, but matches/bests the best tournament run in the history of our program. Almost every single casual fan will take the best season in program history for a 1 year tourney miss and I’d wager a large portion of the die hard fan base would as well.

I know. It's a stupid hypothetical. I want to win the whole damn thing as much as anyone. I also like being damn good every year. IMHO, success in the regular season reflects the best teams, not a one and done tournament. I will repeat myself. Should be best of 3 from S16 through FF

I want to get to about 10 consecutive NCAATs. Devoe went to 5 straight. Green 4 straight. Bruce had his 6 appearances in 6 years. Barnes will tie Bruce this year with 6 consecutive NCAATs. He’s currently at 5 considering that 2020 was cancelled due to COVID. Barnes owns the record with 7 if he goes again next year. And 7x also passes Bruce and Devoe with a total of 6x each.

If UT goes every year, eventually they’ll be on the receiving end of lucky bounces and friendly whistles and win 3, 4, or maybe 5 games.

Can't win if you're not in. I want as many chances as possible. There's no reason why UT could get hot as a 8 or 9 seed during a "down" year and make a deep run that way, too.

Even USCjr and GA stumbled into Final 4s. I agree. Get there every year. Can’t win it if you’re not in it. More and more UT teams are getting into the mix as potential national champions.

I like where we are. Louisville used to be a near blue blood. Now they’re hot garbage. Indiana is no longer close to where they once lived.

Several posters keep repeating that Barnes coaches the offensive production out of his players. But the facts with Vescovi are that he’s hit 66.7% or better of his 3s 14 times since his first game. He also had 9 turnovers twice that first year. This year Vescovi has 19 turnovers in 20 games. Pretty good player development IMO.

Just because a tournament was cancelled does not forgive Barnes for not making the tournament. The 19-20 Vols season we were a 17-14 squad, love how these blind folks love to forget about that year. The only game that was affected by COVID was a meaningless Sec tournament first round game. So this will only be the 4th straight tournament we would have made. I would easily trade a few years of not making the tournament for a Final Four or better run. You do hang Final Four banners and we are the best college basketball program to never make a Final Four. It bugs me that we have had plenty of teams that could have achieved this and we never have managed to do it. To make the third weekend of the Big Dance would be an amazing thing for this program. UConn makes it the same amount of time as us, yet has 6 Final Fours and 5 Titles. I would take that all day everyday and their missed tournaments and bad seasons over anything UNC, Duke, Kentucky, or Kansas have done in that same time frame. Barnes, Pearl or whoever got it done in that manner would also have a statue out next to Pat if they could do it. This is with even worse regular seasons than we have had. UConn has not even won their conference regular season title since 2006. Have solid regular seasons and then show up in March. Play your best basketball then. We never do….EVER!

Read the first two comments. The "does not forgive Barnes" statement is laughable on so many fronts

It’s because the guy who posted right before made it sound like Barnes has gone to 6 straight when he really hasn’t. Try to keep up and actually read the message board. Thanks and have a wonderful evening.

Yes, but technically he has gone to 6 straight. We might have made the 2020 tournament. We beat UK in Rupp late in the season on national TV. We probably needed a couple of wins in the SEC tournament to make it, so it wasn't that unlikely

Yep…amazing how that season corresponded with the year he was leaving us high and dry for UCLA. He was leaving the cupboard dry and then some. I do not forget nor was I born yesterday. Go Vols!!! Let’s make the Final Four this year. We need it and are long overdue.

He didn't leave, did he? Thank You Randy Boyd!

Jaden Springer and Keon Johnson, both 5 stars, had already committed. Your hate for Barnes might need therapeutic treatment
