Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Oh so you don’t have any more input to the discussion other than to say you want Barnes gone…gotcha we understand, so are you going to continue to post about how we should get rid of him every thread and do we need to continue acknowledging the same post in every thread? Because I feel like we have heard that already why continue to say the same thing over and over again?

I never said to fire him ever - he has done just enough to avoid that. But I have never said that.

Apparently you think that Barnes is doing a great job so then according to your analysis it’s the players fault.

However I don’t think Barnes is doing a great job. I think the offense, his offense is abysmal, I think he beats on players so much so that he beats them down.

That said, please explain how and why TN list to a Texas team that is woeful. TN has a better roster. Please explain the TN post deficiency. Please explain the offense inefficiency. Explain why Barnes didn’t work the officials tonight. Explain what some nights, like tonight, Barnes doesn’t work the officials.

Why doesn’t Barnes run plays for Vesco or Powell or he’ll even JJJ? Especially when the offense has turned it over 3 possessions in a row.

You are so right it worked out great with Tyndall and cuonzo..

We are 7 years gone from Tyndall (who was an excellent floor coach and good recruiter) Tennessee's offense looking like it could star in a Bad News Bears remake about basketball every couple of games has nothing to do with what Barnes inherited from those two.

Right so let’s fire Barnes and hire another Tyndall and Cuonzo is the argument I thought?

I'd love to have a coach with Tyndall's floor coaching and recruiting ability when Rick retires.

And to credit Cuonzo, which I'm loathe to do, he made a sweet 16 and recruited well.

Otherwise, you are the only one harping about the two of them.

My goodness…Cuonzo and Tyndall did not recruit well. Tyndall was a good floor coach, but offense wasn’t exciting.

In his very brief time on the job he signed Kevin Punter and Admiral Schofield. Punter averaged 22 points a game Rick's first year and Admiral was an all time Vols great. That's not bad at all.

Cuonzo signed multiple guys who ended up in the NBA. His inability to coach the talent he had was what was so frustrating.

Admiral was a 3 star who took 2 years to develop. Sure, great player. But we arent talking about a coach who signed top 100 players.

Counzo only signed high level 5 stars at Cal and Mizzou. JRich had to develop into a pro. He left us with guys like A J Davis, Thompson, and others who never played for Tyndall or were no good.

It’s not even close to what Barnes has signed.

Cuonzo signed Stokes and Hubbs too. Stokes was a high 4/low 5 star and Hubbs was a 5 star.

But regardless of their recruiting ranking, which doesn't matter one teeny, tiny single little bit once they step on campus, each of them signed great college basketball players. Barnes very best recruit was Grant and it's not even close. He was a 3 star too. I'd trade any 5 star Barnes has signed for Grant. I'd even consider trading any two 5 stars Barnes has signed for Grant.

Even if we somehow get a handle on NIL for these players and Barnes recruits really well, I just think we already know where his ceiling is. I’m not advocating firing Barnes, that would be stupid at this point. I think Barnes will get us into the NCAA tourney most years and we will exit in the first or second round. Maybe make a Sweet 16 if he lands some guys that can really bang it out inside. For some, that’s enough and it’s entertaining basketball. For others, it won’t ever be enough and watching a Barnes team will continue to be frustrating. If I’m the AD, I would be very measured about contract extensions and raises going forward. If he wants to test greener pastures, well, go test greener pastures.

Making the Sweet 16 means only 8 teams out of 350 had more success in the NCAAT.

IMO, Barnes is a very good coach at developing players but it takes him 2-3 years to do so.

I feel that he is not so good at the one and dones. Doesn't seem like he allows them to learn on the job., even though the learning curve would be so much sharper for them.

Is it unfair to compare how Barnes handles and teaches the 5* as opposed to Cal? Seems Cal gets more out of his 5's in a quicker time fram.

Agreed…Barnes has hit the ceiling and will be extremely lucky to see the sweet 16 again. He hasn’t done anything this year to warrant an extension and raise. If he gets upset over that, so be it. He would have already left if they weren’t going to make him pay his full buyout.

Apparently AAU ball teams play defense…that’s a new one to me from our fanbase lol
I guess turning the ball over constantly, falling and squirming around on the ground, bricking every other shot, and not running any meaningful plays until the very end is high caliber coaching and execution. Got it. Thank God we played defense or it would have been a 30 point blowout.

Please.

We’ll, I’m a Barnes supporter, but this basketball is so reminiscent of Kevin O’Neill’s offensive product. Man it’s difficult to watch.

Donnie Tyndall was 7-11 in the SEC and lost 12 games to UNRANKED opponents.
Yeah I didn’t see this supposed great “floor coaching” with him at all. He was 2-7 in SEC home games. He sucked and I’m glad the NCAA gave us a get out of jail free card after one year with him. He would’ve been Buzz Peterson 2.0

I'm not saying we should fire Barnes and I'm certainly not suggesting who should replace him. It is my opinion that Barnes is overpaid, overrated, and will never win a major tournament for us. Tennessee is a great opportunity for coaching success with deep pockets and a large, involved fan base. If Barnes ever were to leave, I feel confident we could replace him with high caliber talent.

I personally think Tennessee is well coach, I just don't think we have many "it" players. Some of these recruits are not panning out well. Also, we haven't recruited very good in the center.

When we had Admiral Schofield and Grant Williams, they were "go to" players that could pull of wins like yesterday. Keep in mind that we are losing to great teams as well. After the results yesterday, I would have to say that the SEC is the BEST Basketball Conference this year. Nearly all of our recent losses have been on the road against teams that will make the NCAA tournament and probably even go past the first round.

Texas is a 15-5 team.
LSU is a 16-5 team.
Kentucky is a 17-4 team that just whipped Kansas @ Kansas.
Alabama has beaten Gonzaga, Baylor, and others.
Texas Tech is a top 20 team. They crushed Mississippi State yesterday and beat Kansas earlier this week.
Villanova will likely win a solid Big East and go deep in tournament.

This is our losses listed above. All of these teams are good teams that are going to make noise in March. They were also all on the road or at neutral sites. Texas fans and team came out yesterday, it was one of their biggest games of the season and we still nearly pull it out on their home court.

I might add that all of these losses were on the road or on a neutral court.

Recruiting and player development is a direct function of coaching (or lack thereof.) Am I misunderstanding?
