Rick Neuheisel broke down last minute

But seriously, the time management stuff assumes that their ultimate goal was to attempt a 50+ yard field goal at the last second.

They needed that first down. They knew it. They were willing to throw to get it. They would have run the clock down after they secured the first down.

When we needed a first down against Florida, we ran the ball and let them back in the game, but now throwing for the first down is the losing play? I'm almost starting to suspect that it doesn't matter what play you call -- it was brilliant if it works, otherwise it was the worst mistake in the world.

Saban's clock management at the end of the game looked like he hadn't played in enough close games. That's all on him. Leaving 15 seconds was a gift, not that most of our former coaches wouldn't have take a knee and gone to OT.

I was thinking the exact same thing about what our last coaches would have done with 15 seconds on the clock. And right over there on the sidelines stood Doolittle getting to watch the whole thing transpire! Shades of Mizzou for that idiot!

That Best Defensive
Young bailed them out of multiple bad plays with his scrambling. He was pretty dang amazing Saturday.

Bammers are not remotely happy with BoB.

They scored 20 and 24 against TX and the Aggies, well below their standards although no Young against the Aggies.

Agree with you totally though, watching his vaunted defense get annihilated with supposedly the best defensive player in the country was awesome.

That best defensive player in the nation just flat out disappeared didn't he?!? Our tackles are playing lights out this year.

Bryce Young otoh ... Wow, I don't even have words for that guys skills.

Bill O'Brien doesn't coach, or play, defense. They put up 49 freaking points. Golding is the one that's gonna be shown the door.

Saban/O'Brien came in with the typical shorten the # of plays / control the clock gameplan. After 28-10, it was evident that they had seen enough, and went clearly on a course to outscore us. It nearly worked.

Our D was completely gassed in the 4th, but got it done without several players, and finishing w a walk on DB on the last two plays!

Said Saban made a mistake not running at least once to run the clock down or force Tennessee to use a TO (I agreed). If Tennessee had one less TO, the drive doesnt happen.

Then he explains the pass patterns each WR runs. On the first play, 3WRs on one side of the field, Bama covers the "Go" route and the short guy but allows the middle guy, who Tennessee wanted to get the ball to anyway, to get open. Keyton catches the ball for about 17 yd gain. Then, and you'll love this, Tennessee lines up the exact same way on the other side of the field and runs the exact same play. Alabama changed their defense to one that should have worked but their CB, Kool Aid, lost the WR and McCoy enough to allow McCoy to get open for the big catch......

That's what happens when your name is Kool-Aid!

I was incredibly impressed with how they neutralized Anderson and held Gibbs in check.

This staff is on a totally different level from the past 3 on getting the most out of what they have on the team.

One less timeout changes nothing really other than us running up and spiking it with 1 second left instead of a timeout with 2
Speaking of clock management… it’s a rule there has to be 3 seconds on the game clock to spike the ball and stop it. If I recall we had 2 which means spiking it ends the game and we go to OT. So yeah it was crucial we had that TO.

I think you're thinking of a 10 second runoff for penalties
I remember hearing that in order for a ball to be placed, snapped and spiked successfully there has to be 2-3 seconds on the clock. So if it’s less and this happens. The refs call the game. I’ll have to research to be certain

Y'all were right. Dumb rule. Either way you can look at it 1000 different ways. If we didn't burn a TO because our defensive alignment we would've still had enough TOs. It played out how it did and we won the game.

It is a mystery why Saban executed pretty poor clock/game management on that last series. I feel like the Neyland frenzy must have gotten to him too. I think that series and that game, may be the chip in the armor that accelerates Bama’s decline.

I’ve always said if you get him outta his comfort zone, he goes to hell on the sidelines. I think they were so focused on winning they forgot about preventing themselves to lose first which is exactly what he preached to the Bama media sheep last week. Very ironic.

The defense TO probably prevented a score. Defense was totally confused with new kids in the game at that point.

Not saying it didn't but he left the outside WR wide open to go cover the slot. Made no sense.

Remember that we had not really stopped Alabama’s passing game much all day. Saban knew that and was betting on his Heisman trophy QB to either get him a TD or get closer for chip shot FG. It’s a testament to our defensive coaches calling for aggressive defense (blitzing) on that last Alabama series. That was the reason they were forced to kick 50 yarder.

Tell it to Rick. I just passed along what he said.

A lot of us could learn more about the game if we listened to people who actually make a living with it.
