Rick Neuheisel broke down last minute

Saban's clock management at the end of the game looked like he hadn't played in enough close games. That's all on him. Leaving 15 seconds was a gift, not that most of our former coaches wouldn't have take a knee and gone to OT.
In my opinion, Saban got greedy the last minute. He wanted to beat us by more than a field goal so he threw 3 incomplete passes instead of running Gibbs up the middle and calling a timeout for the fg attempt.
Hype made him pay.

Completely outcoached. Bama should make a change mid season if they want to stay relevant. Most undisciplined and poorly developed Bama team I’ve seen in a couple of decades.
Something was amiss. Yes, they scored almost at will BUT they couldn't stop us.

I actually like Neuheisel a lot.

I do like Neuheisel, even putting up with the inane Chris Childers on their Sirius ESPNU show to listen to his insights. Neuheisel's eloquent, cerebral takes elevate the game. Childers comes off as boorish Animal House type.

My favorite show. I love it because no one loves college football as much as Childers, I mean no one.

Easy to coach when up 20 to 30 points as in the past. When it is a close game or behind he makes some dumb decisions like the rest. He has benefited from having the best players since at bama. Makes your job easier but he tried everything defensively to stop Tenn offense and did not have much success.

Remember that we had not really stopped Alabama’s passing game much all day. Saban knew that and was betting on his Heisman trophy QB to either get him a TD or get closer for chip shot FG. It’s a testament to our defensive coaches calling for aggressive defense (blitzing) on that last Alabama series. That was the reason they were forced to kick 50 yarder.

Boy did Gibbs ever hand us a gift when he dropped that little crossing route on 1st or 2nd down? He simply catches that and his momentum carries him to the FD. Closer FG and no time remaining.

I think when 28-10 slapped Nick in the face, the decision was made right there that AL was going to have to outscore us to have a chance. They scored 18 straight right there after looking like road kill. Some of that game plan may have bled into that last minute there and the rest is history.

A consistent recruiting scheme is about 1/3 of what a college coach does to succeed. Saban has been unmatched (until Smartt) and he seems pretty good at all the rest too. That's the key to a collegiate coaches success, while professional (and lower levels) eliminate that 1/3 and put more emphasis on staff management, player dev, and game day coaching etc.

He didnt think we could do anything in 15 seconds. He wont make that mistake against us again.

Alabama was trying to score a damn touchdown IMO, not get into field goal range. So running the ball would not tend to be the first option. They were forced to settle for a field goal attempt and then those last few seconds were used against them like in a court of law...

Gibbs was going a good ways, if not 'all the way', when he dropped that ball. That non-play dramatically altered the end of the game.
And you're totally correct. He makes that catch and they kick a chippie with 2 seconds left and walk out of here with a big damn win and leave us all stunned... But that **** didn't happen!!

If so, then that was not smart when only a fg was needed to win, and a short fg has much greater odds of success than long td pass

We coulda hit our two wide open receivers and been up by 2 more touchdowns as well. Somehow people think we got lucky. In reality, I think bama was lucky that, we set and easy touchdown on the ground for them, and missed 2 more TDs. That's 21 points of gift. Then there is the PI in the endzone that was called on us but actually should have been on them. No. They had plenty of luck. We just overcame it.

I remember hearing that in order for a ball to be placed, snapped and spiked successfully there has to be 2-3 seconds on the clock. So if it’s less and this happens. The refs call the game. I’ll have to research to be certain
You can run a play with 0.01 seconds on the clock if the clock is stopped after the last down. Once a play is started it may continue long after the game clock has expired. This is not basketball. All you need is time to snap the ball.

I would strongly agree they were trying to score a touchdown since that makes it more challenging for Tennessee to tie the game.

They could have totally beaten us right at the end there. Bad clock management and play calling prevented them from getting any points and allowed us enough time to score as time expired. Even if they still missed the FG, they at least could have forced overtime.

Show a close game that didn't have IFs

Saban's primary in-game mistake was not running the ball once or twice on the last drive to force UT to use their timeouts. Otherwise, they just got flat beat - he had no answers for our offense all day, and required two gift TD's, one on the fumble and other on the offensive PI non-call, to even make this a close finish.

Saban was going for the win in regulation. He knew they could not get in fg range running the ball. He wanted to win in regulation, and did not want to take it into ot on our home field. If Gibbs had not have dropped a pass they would have had us. Just as Hype wanted to win in regulation. Most coaches would have took a knee with 15 seconds left in the game.

You are right, I think he would have scored on that catch, but on the other hand we gave them one td on the fumble. This was the most interesting, nerve wracking game I have ever watched, because of the back and forth scoring and lead changes.

You’re right this isn’t basketball. No clock on the football field will read 0.01

You are spot on about Childers, and he's a fan of UT football. I retract my previous post, as the two do have an entertaining format. It's kind of like PT Barnum teaming with the articulate Neuheisel!
