Say it Ain't So! Willie Martinez Not Returning?

People like to ridicule the idea that a bunch of fans think they know better than the coaches what needs fixing. While that's almost always true when talking about one or a few fans, don't underestimate the collective perception and insight of 100K fans. The collective has knowledge and intuition greater than any of the individuals in the collective. And sometimes even greater insight than maybe a stubborn coach that is too close to the trees to see the forest.
I know what you mean in theory. Then I see what „collective perception“ brings us every single election 😳

Also, Banks coaches the safeties and DBs overall. He also calls the defensive plays that includes the big cushions that are allowed. This could be due to the lack off talent that he has. Not saying that Martinez shouldn't go but poor secondary play is not all his fault. JMO it is a lack of talent more than anything.
Other programs produce better with less. No talent is an excuse.

Seems,as some have said, this is rumor mill material. Someone said facts versus this thread. Still waiting on an answer. Btw, Florida guy can go elsewhere. From what you all have shared no upgrade. Simply a lateral move and we stay vulnerable as before in the secondary.

Willie is a good recruiter, but crappy coach. At Georgia, with a head coach that played defensive back, they really don’t need a “coach”. They need someone who can bring in bodies. I’m sure Kirby will make sure their defensive backs are coached up.

So, let me see if I understand this correctly. Florida fired Raymond because his position group didn't show enough improvement or development of players. So we fire Martinez and then hire someone that was fired. Ok....that is literally the most ignorant thing I've seen on this board and it's some ignorant crap posted daily.

There's just no hope for some of this fanbase.....😔
I agree with your logic. I’ve always questioned why a person would marry another person that is already married, but is cheating on their current spouse. What do you think they will do to you when things go South?

However, Raymond could butt heads with the other coaches and not fit in, or be too negative. That does happen sometimes.

I made a thread on this and was told tgat Heupel hasn’t worked with Raymond and has no ties to him. So therefore he won’t hire him.
Probably the defense analysts from the saints is who Heupel will hire, because he got him this past year so he could fill the position when Willie left. That’s a trend how Heupel works I think

One of the biggest gripes I've seen on VolNation this year revolves around Willie Martinez and our horrible secondary play. Call after call from loyal Vol fans for his ouster may not have fallen on deaf ears. It seems Willie's contract is up and CJH is not expected to renew it. I'm very happy to see us upgrade at that coaching position; however, I hope it doesn't hurt us in the short run in recruiting. Halleluiah Go Vols!

Surely Rodney Garner carries some weight in this situation.
If this is my guy and I’m Heupel, I have myself, Garner AND Banks, along with AD White, on a plane to see him immediately!

Martinez's agent had the article written for the right price. Georgia can have him. He might be good at recruiting, but it sure hasn't translated to the field. We need better quality talent than what he's been bringing in.

If the DBs can just turn their heads around and look for the ball - that will be a complete upgrade - like going from 2.0 to 6.0.
The DBs have not been able to stay close enough to play the ball.
The best CBs are proactive, not reactive. Reactive DBs have to play handsy and run into their guy without looking because they were beaten and now have to play the receiver, not the ball.

We have improved drastically since Heupel took over and I appreciate the culture he is building inside our program. You pair that with an administration that understands the significance and is supportive of the football program, it is a recipe for success.

This is not a critique, more of a concern, but I wonder if Heupel can make tough decisions about players and coaches. He seems to be married to certain people or ways. I think that will determine his long term success. I also wonder about his ability to motivate. We seem to come out flat after halftime with no adjustments.

I think that’s a big reason why we promote from within so much.

Their pass defense is better than ours and they played a tougher schedule.
