And, after that you paid your entire way? Or, did you have some sort of guardian who paid for **** without providing a credible threat that they would revoke room and board from you if you failed to make your bed?
I was taken in by my Grand Father he owned a small water cress farm...He died in 1978 more or less pennyless I was 16. He drank and gambled HARD
I went to work at Druthers a burger joint and moved in with a friend stayed in my Van some..got a drum set .. Joined a band at age 19...Booking agent out of Atlanta Ga.
Played the whole southeast for 10 plus years. Played with the members of Firehouse..well before they were Firehouse
NO BODY GAVE ME ANYTHING and I didn't want ANYTHING FOR FREE!!!!!
And right now I make 80k a year...did it on my own with no hand outs!!!

There is no point in shaming the kids and this is where the outrage lies, for me. However, there is no reason why the school district or the food service company should eat the costs. And, since education is a legal right in this country, there is no effective way to ensure that the parents do pay for the lunches.
I do think that the egg and carton of milk approach is a good approach; however, I think it could be done in a manner that is not shameful (e.g., have the child eat their lunch in the secretary's office, where they are not around the other children).
