Scotty Hopson

He won't get any minutes at point this year. Ramar already doesn't get enough minutes.

Even next year I'd be surprised if he got a lot of time at the point because of his height which makes him more turnover prone than shorter PGs.

Ramar already doesn't get enough minutes? Are you kidding? Jordan Howell is starting over him! I mean, come on. He is obviously not doing a good job right now. If Jordan Howell is taking your minutes then you are not deserving of a lot of minutes. I must temper everyone's expectations of JP Prince though. He is being set up for failure. Everyone is building him up as something he is not. I will be very surprised if he carves out much of a niche in the rotation.

logical question. if JP couldn't break into the lineup for any PT at Arizona (avg. 2-3 min per game) how's he going to get more at UT, where the talent, according to the experts, is deeper? i think a lotta people are drinking too much of the orange kool-aid on this.

He doesn't have mono or homesickness any more. Plus, we are thin at the point this year.

I don't know if anyone is promising JP will play lights-out basketball for us, but based on what players and coaches are saying about how he's doing thus far, it seems he'll be better than his limited PT at Arizona would indicate. And I don't know why they'd exaggerate his play at this point.

If anyone has any firsthand knowledge of his performance since transferring, I'd love to hear it.

I'll be surprised if Jordan Howell is the starting PG by January. He's a decent backup PG. I really want Ramar to regain some of the intensity and aggressiveness he showed in the second half of last season. I think he can be a huge asset to this team, but I also want to see what JP can do. A 6'8" PG presents very interesting matchups.

as far as that goes, a 7'0" point guard would produce a lot of interesting matchups, also, but i don't think you would be happy with the outcome of them. there is a reason why smaller, quicker guys are better at the point. you don't want your point guards under the boards going for rebounds and putbacks. thats not what they are for so heights differential is of no advantage, it is actually a drawback for them.

Everyone but Bruce seems to know that Howell is a liability when he's in.. although Bruce does know he's just trying to make a statement to Ramar. He can't drive in and pass the ball out for an open 3 like Ramar can and he definetely can't finish like him. If Ramar continues to get this many minutes and Howell starts over him we won't make it past the sweet-sixteen.

I didn't say Ramar deserved the minutes - because he's playing bad - but if Ramar can't get many minutes - then JP won't.

And whoever just used a Magic Johnson comparison to JP Prince is on crack.

If there were a 7-footer who could dribble and pass like Magic Johnson, that would be a significant advantage. That's unlikely, but we've seen guys like Magic and Jalen Rose who dominated at the PG position with a significant height advantage.

And just b/c they're tall doesn't mean they have to bang the boards always - being able to throw entry passes over the top with little trouble is also an advantage. But it would be okay for your PG to go for rebounds and putbacks if you have two other 6'2" guards who typically hang out on the perimeter and can get back on defense.

Also, on defense, JP could guard the opponents' 2 or 3 position and we wouldn't have an automatic mismatch like we do when either JuJuan or Lofton has to guard the 3.

The comparison wasn't to their abilities. It was to using a taller guy at the PG position. Magic was a 6'9" PG. JP is a 6'8" PG.

I'm going to stop talking about JP until I see him play.

I think that is the best course of action.

Hoopmasters is reporting Hopson actually signed a Mississippi State letter of intent. He has 21 days after the end of the signing period to turn it in. If he doesn't, his recrutiment goes on into the spring.

Hoopmasters is like way behind on recruiting compared to other sources.
i wouldnt even care what they said.. they update their rankings like once a year..
they prolly dont even have Tyler smith at UT yet... they prolly still have him enlisted at Iowa! haha

Yeah, Hoopmasters is terrible. That's why every bigtime coach in America has Van Coleman on speed dial.

rivals article pretty much says he is not commited to MSU anymore.....and that bruce was there. but the thing i like is that he said he loves to play in a up tempo style of play..........HV, any1.....how it lookin for us?

Tennessee is a major contender for his services. From what I've gathered, he talks to Steve and Bruce on a weekly basis.

I was at HOOPFEST this weekend and watched Scotty Hopson play. Bruce Pearl was there as well. Hopson hasn't commited yet, but the word is that Bruce was there for Him. Lots of talking about him going to UT.

BTW: This thursday night tune into ESPN for the televised OAK Hill game. They are the no 1 H.S. bball team going against the number 2 team in the nation. From my Hometown Marshall County, KY!!

Talk about easing the pain from the sting Elliot Williams left us...to get a big time prospect like Hopson would be a huge boost to the entire program.

Without getting my hopes up, we're still looking very thin at the 1spot next season. I can't comment on Prince directly, but so far it sounds like CBP plans on using him on the wing primarily as a defensive specialist, and Ramar has been so erratic so far this season. I realize the potential Ramar has, but he's got to find some consistency.
Any news on Juco guys, i know it's early for that...or any other PGs for '08?

I saw that...one thing that concerns me about Hopson is the fact that both scout and rivals have mentioned his attitude and lack of intensity at times. In the rivals article Hopson also said he wanted to play for a coach that has a history of developing and sending players to the pros. That being said, I think Pitino and Louisville will become a big player for Hopson in the coming months and could be the team to beat. Especially if they don't get Tyreke Evans, who seems to be growing more fond of Memphis by the day.

Let's hope I'm wrong

From first hand observation, I would say that is a real concern. The one time I have seen him play this year, however, he did much better, actually turning up the intensity defensively and on the boards late in a close game. I hope a year of maturity and a new HS coach have begun to eliminate the only flaw from his game.

If you guys are worried about intensity from a player then stop worrying about Hopson who isn't even committed and worry about Jurick.

Their intensity if the least of our worries under CBP. They won't play otherwise.
