sec expansion (merged)

Judging by this thread, geography isn't a strong suit of many... especially those who think WVU makes more natural SEC sense than Clemson. I'm attaching a link where you can play around and see just how far Morgantown is (almost Pennsylvania) from every SEC school they would play.

Their closest three trips: 5 hours (Lexington) 6 and a half hours (Knoxville) 8 hours (Nashville)

Consider that UT only travels more than 4 and half hours for one divisional game (Florida)

Driving Directions from Morgantown, West Virginia to Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Also, bear in mind that West Virginia seceded from the Commonwealth because it didn't want to be a part of the South... thus cutting off key railroad supply routes that proved detrimental to the cause.

The Big East is about to flame out and their schools are looking to join the SEC and Big 10.

Yeah, and Missouri is going to the Big 10. I will believe it when I see it.

I personally think that if we are going to add two teams to the SEC based on fan base and monetary contribution, we need to add VT and Miami. To me, those two add the most to the SEC by not only money, but also by level of play.

Hey Knoxvillian,
What kind of balogna was it?
Nothing like a good balogna sandwich, especially, with some green onions. Man....
GO VOLS!

Umm? A cause everyone is glad worked out the way it did. I hope your not saying you wish things turned out the other way...

I don't think geography is a huge deal anymore. These big universities can afford to fly to games, and WVU already makes trips to UConn, S.Fl, L'ville, Rutgers, and Cuse.

Maybe I am in the minority, but I would prefer that we dont bring in any teams that are very good. The SEC is tough enough as it is. JMO

Ha, yeah... and UT has a beast of an OOC schedule for the next 8 or so years set.

Home and aways with Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas and Nebraska, right?

Why would the SEC add another team and screw up the TV deal that we currently have? Schools are making too much money right now.

As long as there is basketball there will be a Big East.

Only way SEC adds is if the Big 11 comes after UK.

If the Big 10 expands to 16 teams...and that seems to the be point of discussion on Rivals Radio today, you'd better believe that the SEC is going to expand too as well as the Big 12. Especially if the Big 10 manages to strongarm Notre Dame into joining. If we do expand, I understand where some of our fans would want beatable teams, but we'd likely take on teams that give us (the SEC) access to large markets, generate revenue, and/or just seem like a natural fit with the conference...the most important ones being the first two.

The Big 10 would naturally go after Rutgers & Syracuse. I don't think that the SEC has any realistic shot of landing any desirable program in the northeast. If we were to spread into other regions, I'd rather spread west and take TCU if the Big 12 doesn't.

Clemson and GT would be natural locks. Louisville would be good IMO. I would let Arkansas walk if the Big 12 came calling. It would make sense to add another school from Florida. Lesser, beatable teams to consider would probably be Tulane & Memphis I would think.

The Big 12 would fold if the SEC expanded to 16. We'd take texas, a&m, oklahoma and the big 10 would get missouri and nebraska.

Look for the SEC to gain 2 of the FL teams if we expand...I could see us grabbing Miami and USF.

USF is in a big market and is a team on the rise we would dominate the whole state of Florida if that were the case. Throw in A&M and VT to that and that would give the SEC strong hold on KY, Virginia, SC, Georgia, FL, TN, Bama, Mississippi, and eastern Texas markets.

That would give us divisions of

EAST
Florida
Miami
Georgia
Virginia Tech
Tennessee
USF
South Carolina
Kentucky
WEST
Alabama
Auburn
LSU
Arkansas
Texas A&M
Mississippi
Mississippi St.
Vanderbilt

If the Big Ten goes to 16 teams, it will blow up in their faces. The WAC already tried a 16-team conference, and the result was a breakup of the league into the MWC and a truncated WAC.

The SEC doesn't need to go down the same path. A 16-team conference is just too big.

If it goes to just 14 then I see USF and Va Tech not being in the mix.

EAST
Florida
Miami
Georgia
Tennessee
South Carolina
Kentucky
Vanderbilt
WEST
Alabama
Auburn
LSU
Arkansas
Texas A&M
Mississippi
Mississippi St.
