SEC Expansion (merged)

What does Texas mean by "their own networK"?

If Tejas joins the SEC they better damn know they aren't running it.

The $209M which the SEC just distributed amongst its members arrived as a result of their multi-year deal with ESPN / CBS. However, SEC schools continue to be allowed to negotiate and secure local television rights, which they are then, allowed to keep for themselves.

Conversely, the Pac-10 deal is an, "all-rights" deal (as they themselves have described it), meaning, those schools who entered that conference would have to agree to forego all individual television rights - both national and local.

Texas has long contemplated its own television network (ala the Big 10 Network, but only for the State of Texas) - which they could easily pursue as members of the SEC, but not as members of the Pac-10.

Well, since it's all speculation out there right now anyway, how about a hypothetical:

If the SEC was going to add one of these schools, which would you want?

Texas A&M or Oklahoma?

One thing--it's notable how mum the SEC has been the last several weeks. Yet I have to believe they've been working the back channels as much as any other conference while this unfolds.

I wonder what Mike Slive has up his arm; I hope to God there's something. Anywho, I was trying to think of how the SEC can both improve and pull in new markets; which seems to be the driving force behind expansion.

Why doesn't the SEC pull in TCU? They are, and have been, a quality football program. It would pull in the Texas market and likely help improve the SEC's recruiting efforts. TCU would jump at the opportunity to join the elite conference in college football.

Who comes in next? I don't think the Florida schools are realistic. Most of the SEC recruits down there. By adding two other schools from the state, schools other than UF lose the persuasive pitch of playing in the SEC bc kids will be able to do that at Miami or FSU. I just don't see the ADs approving the additions. Apparently VaTech will be a tough pull as well due to some political ties.

Which brings me to my wildcard(s). Maryland. While its not a powerhouse football program, bringing them into the fold gives the SEC entry into the Baltimore-DC media market, along with some other markets along the East Coast. My other wildcard provides similar logic. Extend a bid to Virginia, which will increase the SEC's academic cred and just may help alleviate some of the political issues that would stop the conference from bringing in VaTech.

The SEC already has a great football brand. If thing is about money, which it appears to be, lets snatch two big markets while bringing in some more AAU schools.

Thoughts?

head coach in the SEC>Defensive coordinator in big twelve>Defensive coordinator in Pac ten or the pac/big 10/12/16. Just sayin.

my point was:

he's still getting his money and a guaranteed later job at Texas

I imagine Muschamp is still feeling fine, regardless of where Texas ends up

Ill give you TCU but VA for an academic jump? Might as well call up mighty Duke. Take TCU, Miami, FSU and VT. We need powers to even the playing field otherwise we will no longer be sitting atop the college football mountain. I mean who wants to be looking up at the Pac-10?

790 the Zone in Atlanta reported Thursday afternoon that the SEC is offering invitations to Texas A&M and Virginia Tech to join the conference.
