SEC Expansion (merged)

I've always loved the Horned Frogs mascot.

What if the SEC tried to add Kansas, UNC, Duke and throw in Mizzou or K-State?

That would give the SEC UNC, Duke, Kentucky and Kansas in the same conference giving us the best football and basketball.

Just a different direction for argument's sake.

All valid points. The best thing for branding is the Florida schools, but I just don't see the SEC ADs approving them. In order to get more revenue I think that we have to bring in new markets.

As far as Virginia, I said only extend a bid if you can bring in VaTech as well (I saw a report earlier that there are some political ties holding VaTech back--maybe bringing in Va gets past that).

I would be really disappointed if Texas Tech was extended a bid. The school hasn't done anything. Why pull them in over a proven TCU program? Simply bc they are apart of the Big 12? Tech over TCU doesn't make football sense to me, but that just my opinion.

Best football is debatable with Pac-16 in play.

Looks like the SEC would try and take a role as a basketball conference.

So I doubt it... Besides, I doubt UNC/Duke/Wake/NCSU split from eachother.

Best potential outcome of expansion for the Vols would be adding UNC, WVU, Texas, and Texas A&M. These additions would make SEC basketball one of the best conferences in the country and bring in a lot more money and exposure in new markets, without having a negative effect on Vols recruiting. Also UNC and WVU are teams that are respectable in football, but should never really make a big challenge against Georgia, Florida and Tennessee for control of the SEC East.

I think A&M, WVU and even Texas are fairly plausible. I think it'd be difficult to get UNC to leave their set up in the ACC, but I don't think its impossible of the money is right.

So Milo, do you think the SEC needs to expand to remain viable in the long term or is it possible for us to stand pat?

SEC would still have LSU, Florida, Bama, GA and Tenn for football then for basketball UNC, Duke, Kansas, UK and Tenn.

If they get Kansas first it could be enough for UNC and Duke to take a look.

Imagine KU, UK, UNC and Duke playing in the same conference.

Yes, I believe they need to expand.

Regardless of quality of football, the new Pac-10 and Big Ten would command much, much larger market shares than the SEC (the Big Ten already does). This does come back to football, though, and it stands to reason that within the next few years, the new Pac-10 matches (or possibly surpasses) the SEC in football.

I see the SEC's best options as adding Miami and Florida State (Miami doesn't add much now, but drives all sorts of ratings and revenue when they are on the up and up), which essentially puts the state of Florida on lockdown for the SEC, which would be huge for talent and nice for ratings. Then the next best options are Virginia Tech and Clemson, which gives the SEC further footholds into the Carolinas, and if the SEC were to get its own network, that could carry all the way up to DC households (remember, it's not how many people watch, it's how many households the programming is available in).

I see no value of adding Texas A&M if they don't get Texas as well, Missouri, or any of the N. Carolina schools.

not so much

Louisville had a great basketball tradition and has had good football teams as well. Kansas, well, excellent basketball program, that goes without saying. Their football team leaves a bit to be desired, but that could be helped by joining the SEC, imo.

Chip Brown just tweeted that Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State are all lock steps to the Pac-10 and will wait till next week to announce it. Curiously Texas A&M are absent from the list. He also said that A&M is still heavily considering the SEC.

I wholeheartedly agree on the bolded. I guess Va Tech and FSU would be my first choice. Something is just rotten about Miami. Clemson and Ga Tech would be my next two.

I guess it's expand or die.

Let them have them. I'd love to see the rest (save Tech) come on over. Opens the Pac-10 up to grabbing Utah and the Salt Lake market.

The SEC stands to gain absolutely nothing by adding Georgia Tech. Not only that, the old-time SEC guys would throw fits.

Maybe somebody can correct me on this, and I know people regard Clemson as wannabes, but don't they have a pretty large fanbase? I think they could be competitive in the SECE from time to time. Not win it, but top three finishes and such.

Clemson does have a large, rabid fan base and NW SC is a growing market.

I remember Ga Tech's shenanigans but I think they would add to BB. I know a lot of techies that are pretty rabid but I don't think it's enough to impact the ratings. When you get right down to it, I suggested Ga Tech because there ain't much else and I love the Varsity. :)
