SEC Expansion (merged)

Delaney has a bug up his arse about the SEC. He HATES the fact that the SEC has become the big dog in college football and is determined to change that. He and Osborne and Nebraska, who hate texas for its arrogance and the fact that the horns get a bigger share of conference tv money than others--have started all this.

Did I not see that the SEC might not have an issue allowing Texas to have their own network?

From stuff I've been reading on the web the SEC has offered Texas their own network but I just don't think the 'Horns want to play in this conference.

if the pac-10 has to give texas their own station to do this they will give it to them. hell the big-10 network has what 5 stations on direct tv?

It appears Texas is hell bent on not coming east.

Accroding to Brown, the PAC 10 will not give Texas its own network.

A lot of this info is redundant, but I thought this was a pretty good article. Covers both comments here.

Orangebloods.com - A&M could throw off Big 12 six targeted by Pac-10

Someone go tell Delaney to go suck a lemon.

A new article just got pinned for subscribers on Orangebloods about the internal fight between texas and TA&M..... if anyone can read it.

call the pac-10 bluff and see what happens

Exactly what will happen? Texas A&M would clearly prefer to join the SEC. The only thing that could keep them from that now is politics.

They are in a position to drastically improve their financial situation wither way.

i'm talking about texas. pac-10 doesn't care much about A&M. the pac-10 will let texas have their own network if that is a requirement for joining. A&M joining the sec by itself would be really really stupid. why void the texas cash cow to go get your arse handed to you by 4 new powers?

If any school's presidents can't visualize what could happen to their chances of winning any credence regarding a football national title by joining a conference that has trophies from the last four should be summarily dismissed. Of course, if they think they can negotiate a share of that gravy train then more power to them.

Gotcha. I dont think you have to worry about Texas, they appear to be headed west.

the only reason i think Texas wouldn't join the SEC is because they are afraid of the competition. no joke

I do not think that they want to open up the state of Texas to the SEC in terms of recruiting. Even in the case of trying to block A&M from moving east by threatening to black ball them amongst the others headed to the PAC and ending their rivalry.

Late last week, when news of the six invites was looming, Pac-10 expansion was predicated on being an, "all-rights" deal. Earlier today, Tim Brando tweeted (sorry, I hate that word, too) that the hold up in all of this was Texas's - not A&M's - desire for a television network, which would be allowable in the SEC, but not in the Pac-10.

If the Pac-10 doesn't get the exclusive television rights to Texas, what exactly are they getting?

We're watching what ultimately does and always will result from a conference obliging one member above the rest....it implodes. I'm not so sure that the Pac-10 should cave in and give them their own network, but maybe they will. If they do, what then prevents Oklahoma from asking for the same? TX am? OK state? USC? How would they deny the requests of those others, having granted it to Texas?

But I agree, the Pac-10 might be desperate enough to do just about anything to close the deal right now. The SEC is trying to place their superiority well out of reach, but the Pac-10 is bidding on the continued relevance of their conference.

Finally, if Texas forces the Pac-10 to provide them that which they could readily have in the SEC....then why not simply join the SEC? It makes far more sense than the Pac-10 from a geographic and stature standpoint.

My guess? Because, "being Texas" won't mean s**t in the SEC, and they're simply scared of what the deal would look like from a television standpoint, alright, as the scores scroll across the bottom of it come Saturdays in the fall.

very good post. I bet your opinion is likely close to the internal conflict being discussed in Austin right now.

Would love to have Texas and Co. join our league, but they would be able to run all over that PAC-10 crowd and that has to be appealing to them. It would be like telling us we could join CUSA, make more money, get our own TV network, and have a relatively easy route to the BCS every season.

In contrast, if they join the SEC, they are going to have to settle for quite a few 9-3, 10-2, 8-4 seasons

FSU and Miami also thought that by joining an easy conference they'd guarantee success. It worked for a while, but now it has caught up with them. What type of top tier recruit wants to play against a bunch of irrelevant nobodies on Thursday nights?

If we are a football conference, you bring in the best football teams you can get in the area. Which means you add the following...

Va. Tech
Florida St.
Miami
Ga. Tech

I dont think that VT and GT give you too much more in terms of new markets. VT is a small market and we already have the Atlanta market due to UGA fans as well as displaced fans of other SEC schools.

This is about football, IMO, not TV markets. It's also about accessibility too. Those 4 schools offer us more as a football conference, than anyone else not names Texas or Oklahoma.

TV market is the predominant factor. The bigger the market the more $$$ they can get. PAC-10's main motivation is the tv markets they will add by adding Texas/Texas A&M, Colorado, Oklahoma/ Ok ST to their conference.
