Severe Weather Thread

Just saw Ron Childers do the futurecast over the next 2 days.....flooding is a major concern.

Hwy 196 is already shutdown just north of 64/Oakland due to the Loosahatchie.

Ron also said the Wolf and Loosahatchie Rivers might start flowing backwards due to the MS River.

Is that a risk for all the west tennessee rivers?

Don't live there. What are the implications at that level?

Army Corp still waiting to decide on blowing levee on New Madrid fault line.
Maj. Gen. Michael Walsh, President of the Mississippi River Commission with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, says no official decision has been made to enact the Bird's Point-New Madrid Floodway plan and blast the Bird's Point levee.

But the Maj. Gen. says they are one step closer to a decision as the barge carrying explosives was stationed in Hickman and moved to Wickliffe.

He announced the decision at a press conference in Sikeston on Saturday afternoon around 5 p.m.

The plan calls for the operation of the floodway though explosives, only when stages reach 58 feet at Cairo with a forecast of stages to exceed 60 feet.

The Mississippi River system has never been under this kind of pressure before, according to the Corps.

So I'm walking around Saddle Creek in Germantown and the tornado sirens start going off. I am so tired of this

At +45 on the Memphis gauge, the Mississippi River will be lapping at the bank of Tom Lee Park. It will not, however, flood the park. At +46 on the gauge, the MIM World Championship BBQ Festival will be affected. At an elevation of +48, the river would flood about half of Tom Lee Park.

Greenbelt Park will be completely under water at +45, except for the walkway. The north parking lot will be flooded and the ramp will be closed there as well as at the Coast Guard. The southern parking lot will flood somewhere between +45 and +48.

Soon, Mud Island River Park will look even more like an island; but it will not flood. However, both ramps will be submerged. There may be limited admittance to the Mud Island Marina; although, the marina itself will continue to be physically accessible.

The big question is: Will the Mississippi River flood Riverside Drive? The answer is that it would take a river elevation of about +50 on the gauge for this to happen. And while we would never say never; it would certainly be a significant unforeseen event for our community.

Here you go.

Record stages for the Mississippi River at Memphis:

February, 1937 (+48.7 feet)
April, 1927 (+45.8 feet)
March, 1997 (+40.76 feet)
May, 1973 & February, 1950 (+40.5 feet)

We are already above the March 1997 level.

I don't think anything touched down here today despite the warnings. The only thing I would be worried about for West Tennesseans is the Mississippi flooding. Stay safe guys

This time next month, we'll be complaining about the heat and afternoon thunderstorms that wreck our fishing and picnic plans. We just gotta make it through the next little bit and this'll be behind us.

"This'll" is a word. I don't care that spell check is telling me it's not.
