He could be the next Stan Heath or he could be the next Billy Donovan. Every coach within hiring reach is a risk. Jerry Green had a proven record and look how that turned out. I feel taking a chance is justified.
Y'all have definitely rearranged my opinion on this issue. Going to the Sweet 16 = guaranteed future failure. I feel lucky to have received this memo in time.
Let's hire a nameless Tar Heels assistant whose only past head coaching experience was high school golf. Worked one other time for Kansas and it's important we stick to proven methods.
Why take an unnecessary risk when there are many, many other proven candidates that we could potentially hire? It would be stupid.
Bruce Pearl was high risk. High risk = high reward. I don't see Smart as an "unnecessary" risk. Maybe a calculated risk. Any coach you hire will have upside and downside. Smart actually has outschemed opponents this tournament. He didn't just luck into the Sweet 16 and judging by his personality I believe he would be charasmatic and a great recruiter.
