Shouldn't we be concerned?

Another star-basher? Talent means a lot; star-system is a strong indication of talent (at least for me). Then I don't get it: why the stars mean nothing?
Considering the amount of frustration that UT fans have been through with off the field troubles from the players over recent years, perhaps a few years of recruiting blue collar character guys would do this team and our reputation some good!

Year the OP won't acknowledge that Fulmer's 05 debacle netted the worst class in Vol history and that attrition makes about his last 5 utterly horrendous.

Right.

If DD is finding talented guys who don't have the accolades but will 1) be able to stay in the program and 2) put the effort into becoming the best player they can be... UT will be much better off in 2 1/2 years than now talent wise.

Has anyone reevaluated UT's last few Fulmer classes after dropping the "great 4-5* players that couldn't stay around? I strongly suspect they would not avg a top 20 class.

I have a feeling that this thread is heading into another star discussion thread. :banghead2:

There's your problem. Go by offer sheets more so than what some recruiting service says. If a guy is a three star but has offers from multiple national powerhouses, he is probably underrated.

Considering everyone we are in the top 3 to 4 for and lead for then I don't see how you can worry.

Trust me, this will be a top 15 class. And I will go out on a limb and say this will be the best recruiting class we've had in the last 5-7 years.

When?

I don't care one thing about recruiting rankings - Dooley is filling positions and adding depth. Until he does that elite talent doesn't really matter - See the second half against Oregon.

When top coaches rely on them to earn a crystal Sears Trophy for recruiting, then they will have significance. Until then they only matter to people who are willing to shell out their hard-earned money to recruiting magazine gurus.

Need speed at skill positions, but it is hard to imagine signing a top ten class when it is so top heavy with OL/DL.

Being in the top 3-4 would suggest we land 1/4 to 1/3 of them. That would give us 3-4 4/5* players, below even the depths of the 2006 & 2008 (whatever cause you wish to attribute to those years), while recruiting remains on a uptick throughout the SEC. This is not a good combination.

So you'd rather turn any thread into a Fulmer debate to nurse your Fulmer hatred than deal with the current coaching reality? More proof of the delusional state of mind of most Fulmer haters...

How does that explain it? Right now, 9 out of our 14 commits are neither DT nor OL; and how is it encouraging that those lineman are, for the most part, not highly sought after recruits?

As you went out of your way to pretend 06 and 08 issues were nameless and faceless. Brilliant.

i say if we are not seriously compeating with alabam, florida, LSU, auburn for players talent wise (and winning those battles) i think we seriously need to change to a spread offense. the type of offense that we run and have ran for the past 30 years can not compeate and win championships against teams that have more talent.

all you pro style lovers have a point...but i think the days of us plucking alot of rival states talent is over for awile. look at arkansas...look at auburns turn around...when you run a more explosive offense that is harder to scheme against we will win alot more ball games. for us to run this O that we are running we have to have supirior talent. it works for bama bc they recruit the best in the country. tennessee cant do that for the time being...maybe ever again. i say give this offense 3 years and if we still are not compeating...hire a spread coach...and throw the bank getting one of the best

WTF are you talking about current coaching reality. I think the current reality is we've went through three coaching staffs in as many years. We had ground to make up in recruiting and the staff is doing that. We're looking at a very good Oline, and DB class right now and likely close out strong on Dline with the prospects we are in on.

No. Dooley will get the job done on the recruiting trail. His approach will be much more personal with the recruits, and that will also win over the parents. We will be fine.

The delusional state of mind is yours in thinking you have a full grasp on the "current coaching reality". You're biased. OK. That's fine. Just say so rather than acting innocent or like you want to actually have a conversation about the real current events and status of UT's program.

When/If Dooley fails like Fulmer did then hopefully most of us will agree to thank him for his efforts but move on to support the next guy in line.

2006 was awful because Phil took "his best team ever" to six losses. 2008 sucked because people started to realize Fulmer's best squads were still going to be humiliated by the worst Saban and Meyer would ever field.

Hogwash. QBs were the problem in both 2005 and 2008. One is still on an NFL roster, and I'm sure the other will end up on one.

The quarterbacks were the problem for our recruiting classes? Strong reading. Declare victory since once again you have no clue what's happening.

The one thing I have been skeptical about Dooley is his 300 mile radius recruiting basis. I say this because our best recruiter, Fulmer, went national. Kiffin went national too. If it ain't broken....

However, if attrition is below the 20% norm, and we get talent at skill positions, this may work out. I'm not going to go into vapor lock if its a #15 - 18 class in Feb.

BUT, it's gotta work the way Dooley thinks it will. Which means through lack of attrition that #15 class becomes a #8 - #10 class on the field.

surely you're capable of seeing these awe inspiring NFL QBs as duds at UT as a coaching problem.

No...wait...nevermind. I understand they contracted vapor lock while climbing the heights of the Smokies. Just an altitude issue. Didn't exist prior to stepping onto Neyland and never again after. Darnedest thing.

Dooley is recruiting California, Louisiana, Florida, and I think we've gone after an Arizona kid, too. But, then again, I rarely sign off with a self-proclaimed victory, so what do I know?
