Shouldn't we be concerned?

Dooley is recruiting California, Louisiana, Florida, and I think we've gone after an Arizona kid, too. But, then again, I rarely sign off with a self-proclaimed victory, so what do I know?

Hawaii is actually 297.3 miles from campus.

We're on pace for the worst recruiting class within SEC rankings with a full coaching staff (2006 & 2008 at least could be attributed to massive coaching staff turnover) maybe since the days of Bill Battle. Why isn't this more of a glaring concern?

Why do people think we are a 5 star program still? With no SEC championships...a couple losing seasons...two coaching changes....and discipline/NCAA violations. How in the hell do people still think we're supppose to have a top 5 class year in and year out? STOP HAVING UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS, do some freaking research, and stop asking stupid questions!!!

that's what Saban said as he strolled into Tuscaloosa expecting losses and mediocre recruiting.

The only thing CDD and saban have in common is they both coached in Louisiana, and that's it! There are VERY few Nick Saban's in this world. His resume' and connections are a bit better than CDD's. I love our coach and our football team, but it is just not fair to expect us to be a top tier SEC team at the moment or for the next 1-2 years. When we get to a point where our second team can hang with people and our 3rd string can fill in I'll be comfortable with higher expectations. Our 2nd string can't hang with ANYONE. I'm not dogging fans or our team, but we need TIME. We've had about as bad of a year as a program can have.

the point wasn't comparing the two coaches, who do have more in common than coaching in LA. The point was that "woe is me" isn't the only approach to making this work and righting the ship. In fact, it is likely the single worst approach anyone can take toward a bad or deteriorating situation. Hopelessness breeds worthlessness.

If you think i'm being hopeless, you're wrong. I think we have a ton of great tools to work with. Our staff (given Wilcox and others don't get offers) is fantastic. We're young and talented in some spots. I just hate the fact that people come on here bashing our program because we're not in the running for the National Championship every year. We have had some terrible luck and shot ourselves in the foot numerous times in the last year and a half. Ok, Saban and Dooley do have similar intangibles but comparing them is pointless. Dooley has done nothing, Saban has done everything (NCAA wise), NFL is a whole different world. I'm not trying to make excuses for us being bad, but our last chance to turn things around was 07 about 10 seconds before Ainge threw that pick and before that I don't even remember when I thought we would be able to win the SEC.(2002 and later)

I agree our expectations should be much, much lower, but not to the South Carolina-level.

Exactly. Here's the problem -- Dooley is getting whipped by Saban, Auburn, Richt, and pretty much everyone for targeted recruits. Here's the record so far against those 3 for regional targets:

Dooley vs. Saban
Dooley - 1
Saban - 10

Dooley vs. Chizk
Dooley - 0
Chizk - 8

Dooley v. Richt
Dooley - 1
Richt - 6

This isn't a good start.

The fact is we're in a rebuilding process...it's going to take more than 8 months to get out of the hole we're in and start winning the head to head battles for the big dog recruits...

I don't like it any more than anyone else here but it's a fact...and it's going to take more time and patience than some people have the stomach for

The one thing I have been skeptical about Dooley is his 300 mile radius recruiting basis. I say this because our best recruiter, Fulmer, went national. Kiffin went national too. If it ain't broken....
There's the problem... It WAS broken under Fulmer. He went national and got two things. Highly ranked classes... and classes with abnormally high attrition rates. He got the guys who were talented but the closer coaches... maybe coaches those guys would have rather played for... knew to be high risk. Recruiting is better judged on the tail end rather than front end. For pretty much all of Fulmer's last 10 years, we felt better on NSD than on SEC CG day.
BUT, it's gotta work the way Dooley thinks it will. Which means through lack of attrition that #15 class becomes a #8 - #10 class on the field.

That's what he's betting his career on.

FWIW, he is actually trying to find another path to the top of the mountain. Many schools are trying to go into the states with the highly rated recruits and sign players that can win championships... and they are ALL failing. Only UT and OU have won the BCS without the benefit of great homestate talent. The other 10 BCS championships have gone to teams from Ohio, Ca, Tx, Fl, AL, and La.

Dooley will not subscribe to Rivals or Scout even after the "rebuilding process". It may succeed. It may fail. But Dooley has a method for evaluating players that he's willing to risk his coaching future on. UT will not have highly rated classes with DD around unless the svcs start agreeing with him.

Yes, location most definitely matters, and getting recruits out of those states will be very hard as long as they have quality coaches or recruiters. This does not bode well for Tennessee, though.

Don't mind that; my bigger concern is losing out on the recruits he did target to our SEC competitors at a frightening rate.

It does if Dooley actually succeeds in finding those players who have the right ability and attitude to be developed above their 2* and 3* ranking.

IMHO, the inate talent in TN is proportionate to other states. Most of it just remains undiscovered because of less competitive HSFB. It is a fact and not just opinion that many great players are overlooked by the recruiting svcs. Dooley is betting his job at UT and the near term future of UT on the notion that he has a method for finding those guys.

If he can then he's a UT icon and possibly a bell cow for other schools. If he can't then IMO he'll be gone in 3.

Someone that follows football recruiting more closely than I do needs to come up with some of the better TN talent over the last few years and see what kind of team we get.

WR - Keiwan Malone, Marlon Brown, Golden Tate
OT - Barrett Jones
OG - Austin Long
C - Daniel Hood
OG - Alex Bullard
OT - Garrett Reynolds, James Stone
TE - Aaron Douglas
WR - Randall Cobb, Zach Rogers, Rashad Mason
QB - Barry Brunetti
RB - ?
FB - Kevin Cooper, Dominique Allen

DB - Marsalis Teague
DB - Ant Anderson
DB - Eric Gordon
DB - Dennis Rogan, Harrison Smith
LB - Greg King
LB - Nick Reveiz
LB - Dontae Hightower
DE - Chris Walker, Alex Watkins
DT - AJ Greene
DT - Montori Hughes
DE - Rae Sykes, Jacques Smith

K - Corey Acosta, Lonas Seiber
P- whatever Colquitt feels like coming here.

Not that bad of an instate base to build from. You still obviously need to go outside of the state, but all but a couple of programs have to do that. Even those guys head out of state pretty regularly to get QBs.

Like I said, someone should add on to my all-Tennessee roster.

Alex Hurst is a starting lineman at LSU, David Spurlock is listed as a starter at FSU, and Auburn has one or two TN boys on their OL. Will Jackson is a second teamer at Ga-Tech.

Considering everyone we are in the top 3 to 4 for and lead for then I don't see how you can worry.

Big time players for

Gabe Wright
Mickey Johnson
AJ Johnson
Arnett
Dallas
Gosha
Bell
Christion Jones
Avery Walls
Derek King
Richardson
Clear

Wasn't that long ago we had a top 3 class..would be impossible to beat that
Trust me, this will be a top 15 class. And I will go out on a limb and say this will be the best recruiting class we've had in the last 5-7 years.

That's has to be a HUGE limb. If you've paid attention to recruiting for longer than a couple of years, it becomes a tree trunk.

Put simply, you're dead wrong. No way possible you could be right. period.

surely you're capable of seeing these awe inspiring NFL QBs as duds at UT as a coaching problem.

No...wait...nevermind. I understand they contracted vapor lock while climbing the heights of the Smokies. Just an altitude issue. Didn't exist prior to stepping onto Neyland and never again after. Darnedest thing.

Data trumps you again:

Ainge fine as frosh.
Disaster as soph.
Ainge fine as jr.
Ainge fine as snr.

Coaching was fine. Ainge changed.
