So, when is the press conference?

And how do you know that he didn’t go for big hire and got turned down?

Because we trust Danny when he said his staff did an exhaustive, coast-to-coast search leaving no stone unturned and spending countless hours interviewing numerous coaches and that there were many good ones but that one stood out of the pack. C'mon, man, it's Danny!

There can be only one!

Hello Volnation -- my first post here.

I grew up in West Virginia and have been a lifelong Marshall fan, but I'm also a UT grad, so I've got a strong loyalty to both programs. Hated to lose Coach Kim from Marshall, but glad she's at UT.

One thing I was very impressed with this year with her Marshall team was that her players played amazingly hard for every second of the 40 minutes, and that is a strong tribute to the coach. Even if they were down by double-digits, her players were giving it their all out there on the court, and many times the game subsequently turned around in their favor. I think she is a very inspirational coach who knows how to get the best out of the available talent. { I know some of you are down on the Hayes family, but those two young ladies (especially Alasia) really blossomed on the Marshall team and seemed to be great teammates who genuinely bought into the system.) I mention that because I've read a lot of opinions on here that say that certain members of this year's Lady Vol team won't be able to cut it in this style of basketball; I say just give Coach Caldwell a chance to work with them. If each of them can come in and give 3 or 4 minutes of hard work at a time, they can then catch their breath on the bench for a few. CKC took a Marshall program that was a perpetual middle of the pack team, picked 9th in the preseason, and molded them into a conference champion, even though she had to work with what was largely an inherited roster.

I watched most of the Marshall games on TV and during almost every away game, the visiting teams' commentators would say "We've never seen anything like this." I'm hoping Kim can gather the talent to make this system work in the SEC. I think players like Spear, Wells, and Wynn will thrive in this system, but players like Hollingshead and Striplin could also be big contributors if they can consistently drive to the basket after the front-line defenders get turnovers. Good 3 point shooters like Puckett and Tess Darby will also get plenty of opportunities to thrive.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it all plays out!

For the last few years, the Lady Vols on average have been the third best team in the SEC. So according to DW they should should finish first or second or next season is a failure.
There you go again AD White did not say that they would win the SEC Championship next year.

Are we in agreement that success will basically hinge upon recruiting and building a staff that can teach defense?
It is solely going to depend upon her ability to get great athletes out of the portal who do not care about minutes or stats. Her system plays a lot of players and no one plays more than a few minutes at a time.

Hey man, I'm right there with you in terms of being a bit shocked by the outcome. At this point, I'm at a place where I like the energy she's bringing, and I'm certain she understands she's got a lot to prove. This isn't a place where anything resembling mediocrity will be tolerated.

And though it won't put his job in danger by any means, I think Danny will absolutely have to eat this—and in a very public way—if things go sideways. I really can't imagine him taking a bigger risk. I'm trying not to be a doom and gloom guy, because I don't think the program will be lost at sea forever if Kim doesn't work out, but certainly Danny cannot go this route again if he ends up with egg on his face. I wish we knew if it was because a lot of people said no or just because he wanted to be bold.

Smarter than anything I've posted all month ☝️

He did get turned down by some bigger names but some just can’t believe it
Turned down because the job was offered or asked if they were interested in interviewing and they said no thank you?

My guess it is more like the USCsr and Indiana coach just wasn’t interested in leaving for anywhere right now and they declined to even discuss the opportunity. Hammond may not be interested in dealing with recruiting at any college must less UT. How many long time men’s coaches have left the sport in last 3 years because they saw portal/NIL train coming (Roy Williams, Coach K, Nicky Satan, etc….)

I keep hearing turned down without any hard references but for me it’s different when people aren interested for one reason or another. I turn down recruiters frequently in the past because I would not consider moving due to parents age…

We really just don’t know If it’s declined interview or turned job offer down.

Another thing came to mind. There ain't gonna be no Europe trips or pool playtime with this coach!

Probably because they don't have a pool.

A Europe trip would be wasted. Kim would just have the team sprinting through airports and chunnels, and the whole tour through eight countries would be over in 1 1/2 days.

Sounds about right. I mean USC did take a while to get to where they are at and SUCKED before Staley got there. Which Staley wasn’t all that good at Temple either before she got to USC. Now she wins NC. So I’m still wait and see on this, but DW has given me no reason to doubt him, I think the only sport we aren’t as good at as we were before he got here is soccer and the girls pitched a fit to keep the assistant and make him head coach. Now we see why that isn’t a very good idea and it’s not one that DW usually does.
Soccer did just have a very good recruiting class….he also had several good players follow the head coach to FSU.

First hand truthful non emotional knowledge is usually not accepted on Volnation.

FYI…Blue Font means post is bleeding sarcasm. Welcome to the board.

Not like our program is all that right now. To be better prob won’t take much, I mean this past team ended up not ranked again, it again only beat Wisconsin Green Bay when this isn’t the NFL and lost to NC state. Expectations at UT should be win or leave, if I know that, I am sure a female that grew up watching the LV like every other girl in the country did, knows that is where this program belongs. Not hoping to win 20 games and win 1 game in the tourney. I love the expectations of winning

Could be wrong, but I doubt that many of today's 18-year-olds remember a lot about our last championship 15 years ago. They're more likely to remember our first-round exit against Ball State.
