Spence "informally" offered OC job

right off the top of my head, and in no particular order..

chris hatcher
steve sarkisian (USC)
kevin wilson (Okla)

I like all 3 of those guys, but do you really think that would be an upward move for Sarkisian and Wilson?

Who would you like to see?

Any offensive coordinator or QB coach from one of the perenial top 10 programs i.e., USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State, etc.

I just don't see their offense being that great. They had a good offense last season, 15th nationally. His other 2 years at Clemson they ranked around 50th in total offense. Seems average.

Any OC from a top ten program has either a head coaching job in mind or NFL job if he has a history there. Not UT.

Not if they are only a position coach, like QB, and not the OC. Or how about the OC at a smaller school like Boise St or Utah. They are ranked top 10 assistants in the country.

Unless the money was crazy, why in the world would one of those guys want to make a lateral move at best to come to Tennessee?

I'm talking about promoting a QB coach at USC or Oklahoma to OC at UT. Or go after an OC at an up and coming school like Utah or Boise St.

I don't care who they get as long as that person makes UT a better team. It does seem that UT has rushed this decision if they have made an offer to Rob Spence already. I have hired people at my employment and we typically go through more of a process than offering a job to the first person we interview.

I'm really hopeful that Fulmer can somehow persuade Kippy to come in as UT's receivers coach.
We now need recruiters. Kippy has been out of the game too long. What Phil really needs to do is usher out Slade, get an experienced QB coach who doesn't mind recruiting QBs, and hire 4 young guys who will recruit 8 days a week while coaching WR, RB, TE and DB.

USC's offense was pretty mediocre considering the talent available. USC fans don't even like sarkisian, and for good reason really.

Im actually gonna be pretty happy if Spence comes here.
If we get him as our OC, and Kippy Brown as just a WR's coach.. that would be freakin awesome.. Recruiting would go uphill like that..
So from what ive heard, Spence is a good recruiter..

I would think there has been more of a "process" behind the scenes than simply meeting with Spence once and offering him the job.

Is Spence a QB coach? If not, who will they get? The Vols will also need at least two top flight recruiters to replace Taylor and Luke. It's starting to look like they really need Slade to retire so they can have another slot.

I think the general consensus among Clemsonites is that Spence is an average play caller, but has done a great job developing Cullen Harper at QB. That would be one of the primary reasons I would think Fulmer is high on Spence.

What the hell happened to that unbelievable "notebook full of interested candidates?"

One interview and we're done already?

What a freakin' tease.

Outside of the fact that he's been a coordinator at a mediocre BCS conference program that has consistently failed offensively in big games, I can't come up with one.

He should fit in nicely at UT, then.

I would like to think so to but if that's the case why are all the candidates "behind the scenes" other than Spence if they did, in fact, go over many of them. It's no secret that Spence is the only name we have heard about getting an interview and now we hear he is getting an offer. You do the math, either they are hiding their other choice or Spence is the first interview and he is getting an offer. What is it?

Well.. no, I don't think it would necessarily be an upward move, but, I don't think that means we shouldn't be talking to them...

It could be an "upward" move if one if them thought they'd be first in line once Fulmer leaves, though.. And that's really the rationale behind my thinking..

Outside of that, then I agree with some of the follow-up posts that followed your question --- about a Boise St or Utah... yeah, to me, that maybe wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Spence just doesn't make a lot of sense to me considering what's out there.... Maybe it's a bluff, as some have said, for Spence to get more money out of Clemson.... but maybe a few other people are right, too, that Spence fits in with Fulmer's "comfort zone"...

I don't know what to believe, but I just think there's better options than Spence.

It's hard to convert ACC numbers to SEC numbers but if you look at the total team defense rankings you'll see that at least 9 ACC schools were allowing around 350ypg or less. It's not a bad conference this year defense-wise, despite Fl.State and Miami being down. There are guys who'd I'd prefer to see in Knoxville (Marrone, Hatcher or Crowton) but I'd much rather have Spence than Kippy. Now I have a reason to watch the Chick-fil-A bowl.

If there's ever a guy that did less with more, it's Gary Crowton. He'd be a terrible, terrible hire.
