Staley Seeking Waiver For T'ea Cooper

She loses the time anyway. If she doesn't get approval, she has 2 years of eligibility vs. possibly getting another 1/2 season on top of that if the waiver is approved.

That’s right she is a redshirt sophomore. It makes me think the girl that left Louisville should automatically play because she moved closer to home, Destiny Slocum should play right away, etc. I don’t know the reason but allowing Jessica Shepard to play right away is going to come back to haunt them. There were rumors of mistreatment within that athletic program so maybe that was taken into account altho Shepard said she wanted to go somewhere she had a chance to go, improve, and win. Maybe that was the answer she was prepped to say? Cooper we all know was asked to leave because of misconduct so if she doesn’t play well... actions have consequences be it positive or negative.

I was watching the Ms St. game and Debbie Antonelli voiced her opinion that Cooper should play because she sat out last year with an injury. It’s hard for me to understand what people don’t understand that an injury and a transfer are to different reasons which should have two different times you sit out barring extenuating circumstances. Then she said Dawn is holding up charter flights waiting for the NCAA and hoping they make a decision in case Te’a can play....

I can kind of see the argument that a player who misses a year with injury and then transfers should be given some leeway in not having to sit out another year. It's not a typical circumstance.

Generally speaking, I would be ok with eliminating transfers sitting out in certain circumstances, particularly in one like Shephard where there was a coaching change or a transfer after sitting out a year with injury. Particluarly in the former cases, it seems unfair to penalize a kid who was wined and dined by a coach only to have said coach split and leave them hanging.

Meh... I’m ok if a kid wants to transfer with an injury and automatically play IF they are in good standing both academically AND behavior wise. In the SEC it has a rule that you will be penalized if you say fight or have physical altercations (we see this more in football then in women’s basketball generally) but the rule is there. UT nor Jamie presses or pursued charges from the altercation so no paper trail per say was there. However, the NCAA may have gotten in contact with UT and said ok what happened and taken into account that she was asked to transfer so that sort of puts her in a different position as well.

I agree if the coaches leave a kid should be able to transfer AND more importantly a recruit/signee should be automatically released without penalty.

If Te'a was officially kicked off the team, I'd agree with you Because she was given the choice to transfer, it makes it more ambiguous. Kind of like giving someone the option of quitting instead of getting fired, but then telling everyone who asks that they got fired.

The scenario with coaching really pisses me off. Same with what happened at UNC. There's no way DD, Mavunga, Gray, etc...should have had to sit out a year because they left when UNC got their hands caught in the cookie jar.

I would be okay with Cooper playing this year if she didn’t transfer in-conference. It just doesn’t sit well with me for her to play this soon—along with Law now coaching at USC too.

However, it would also feel really, really good to beat them both this season. I’m torn on this one.

I’ll trust in whatever the NCAA decides to do.

If they had done that then that may have done more harm than good and she isn’t a bad person I would assume. But it doesn’t leave a paper trail. But if the NCAA does do it on a case by case basis ,like they say, then they may actually investigate into the specifics.

As far as coaches yes that burns me up! I don’t feel that the UK players should have had to sit out when he admitted the climate wasn’t as it should have been!

I didn't think Te'a was kicked off the team but UT, not AD's office or Holly, removed her scholarship thus she choose to transfer to USC who offered a scholarship.

Te'a was given the option of a year probation from school and the team, or she could transfer. She choose the second option.

Holly could've blocked her transfer to another SEC school, but she didn't. She wanted to give her a second (well, third) chance to make better choices without impeding her future.

So she would have had to spend a year away from school and ball (like Joyner Holmes but a whole year not just a semester). Gotcha! That would have put her behind two years of b-ball and one year of school unless she took classes on her own.

I appreciate Holly and the university giving her another chance. We have seen some universities not take the high road in lesser situations!

South Carolina women’s basketball is still holding out hope that transfer guard Te’a Cooper will receive a hardship waiver from the NCAA and become immediately eligible to play.

But head coach Dawn Staley said Friday that the No. 4 Gamecocks have still not heard anything about a final decision on the waiver, which was submitted on Dec. 18. Staley had previously said at the beginning of the season that once the waiver was submitted, she expected the decision to take a week.

I don’t understand why she thought the timeline would be a week, it took 2 months for Norte Dame.

They are going to have to play better to beat UCONN.

They aren't beating UConn. Let's end that train of thought now.

SC needs a lot...A LOT...more from their guards and wings if they don't want to lose that game by 20+ points. There is no one on that time that deserves to be respected as a scorer right now other than Wilson and Jennings when she's right under the basket.

When, and if, she plays...she will turn pro asap ( never finishing her eligability or graduating). She is T R O U B L E! I wouldn't want her on our team this year. We don't need a problem "child"...yes- kicked out of a University= problem CHILD! Honestly, where would she fit in? Would she listen to Russell or Nared? Would she be happy off the bench behind Westbrook and Meme? She has rock star ideas about herself, and karaoke results...at best. Sure she might turn out to be a wonderful adult...I hope, but UT didnt throw her butt to the curb for demonstrating it!

Dawn Staley on Te’a Cooper waiver: ‘I just want a decision. It’s been a month’
January 19, 2018 05:11 PM

Updated January 19, 2018 09:19 PM

It has been a month since South Carolina women’s basketball officially submitted a hardship waiver to the NCAA to make redshirt junior guard Te’a Cooper immediately eligible, and it’s been radio silence since then.

Coach Dawn Staley has been asked several times over the past several weeks about Cooper’s status, and she’s maintained that as soon as USC finds anything out, the university will let people know. The NCAA, meanwhile, has been quiet.

I truly don't know why Dawn or anyone thought this would be a quick decision. I have no problems with Staley and think she's a good coach but the NCAA is a more inconsistent organization than the government. They have no accountability to anyone and never seem to be in a hurry to do anything.

wow I am disappointed in the things that occurred during the DD and TC debacle but this is so cruel! You all say TC was awful but we saw(and hoped at one point)that she would become be a great player. Let's see if it's sour grapes on our part or if Dawn can get the full potential out of this young lady.

I doubt Dawn would have brought her in if she hadn't done her homework on the situation. Whenever they get her on the floor, I want to see her play against the Lady Vols. I like a good cat fight.

Maybe Cooper will have to actually learn the plays this time around.

I'll be anxious to see Cooper although I don't believe Dawn coaches any better than Holly. I think Cooper is going to be a six turnover a game type player. I don't think she'll be happy if she is not getting 10 plus shots per game. Will be interesting to see her SC career.
