Star Wars: Episode VII (December 18, 2015) ***SPOILERS***

Read the information that Abrams approved to be written about the movie back story. Finn is actually at the top of his class and is one of the best tacticians they have. Phasma expects great things of him and the only thing she sees bad about him is the fact he cares too much about his friends

That still doesn't make him the best stormtrooper; it sounds like he has the potential to be one of the best, but he obviously hasn't proven it yet (and never does). It was obviously how green he was when it came to actual combat.

He kept from getting killed by a wannabe Sith.

Can't be too green.

Only because the Sith chose not to kill him. In fact he may have thought he did with the strike on the back, or assumed he would have died.

Even still, saying he was the best stormtrooper is a huge stretch.

Perhaps it's been mentioned already in the 1,500 odd posts, but was there ever an explanation as to why Kylo Ren's lightsaber looks all ragged?

Not mentioned here but I read that it was intentional. The canon story is Ren built it himself and because it's all weird it's supposed to show that his training isn't complete. Compare it to the lightsaber Luke built for ROTJ, and Vader and Palpatine both remark on how well it was constructed.

I bought the FA visual dictionary for my son (and me TBH). In that it mentions that it is made with a cracked crystal which requires the two "side vent" things. I will post more when I get home and read it again.

This. And I think too it's supposed to represent Kylo himself. It's looks very powerful but it's unfocused, raw energy.

Saw this at toy-r-us after taking some things back from Christmas.

Why did they put their best stormtrooper on sanitation duty? That just doesn't make sense.

This. The crossguard is supposed to be a vent for the main blade because it is based on an ancient saber design.
